General Discussion / Re: Tuturial
« on: October 19, 2007, 01:57:02 pm »
I tried playing the tutorial with a fresh alt I made just to see what it was like. Great job, hopefully it'll stop so many nice RP's being interrupted with "how do i kill stuf?" and "where do i get muney?" LOL. Also, it's great that it means n00bs come into the game with at least a starting weapon and such, so they're not totally reliant on other players giving them stuff to start off. Makes it that little bit more bearable trying to start from scratch :).

BUT, I odn't know if I'm just dumb or what but when I got to the part about training fighting, I couldn't get the NPC to understand me to start it. There also didn't seem to be any hints on what to say to him (if it WAS supposed to work but I was saying the wrong things). Maybe this could be cleared up a bit (if it hasn't already).

Linux Specific Issues / Temporary lock and 100% CPU at startup
« on: October 15, 2007, 07:00:26 am »
Don't know if everyone else has the same issue or not, or just me.

Just installed 020, got it all set up and such, seems to be working for the most part. However, instead of having the normal loading screen just before login, it displays the splash screen for about a second, then goers straight to login where PS temporarily locks up with 100% processor usage, and after about 20 seconds or so starts moving again. I assume the lockup is actually the game loading where it should NORMALLY be loading at the load screen. Anyone else experienced this?

Mine is pretty simple: Mal-eek

My wife's name (Senice) is pronounced with a 'sh' sound: Shen-ees

My last name is also pretty simple: Har-mack (just how it's spelt)

My useless and disobedient groffel is Farnal (Farn-all)

General Discussion / Re: Money exploit: Confession Window
« on: September 28, 2007, 10:40:34 am »
It's so frustrating when something like this occurs. A major bug like this is found, and exploited by a few cheaters, and things go to hell.

I agree that the server being down for so long is punishment. BUT, we're not being punished by the developers, we're being punished by the cheaters. I would hazard a guess that if the players were trustworthy and not exploiting the bug, perhaps the server could still be up while the bug is fixed. But, because of a few cheaters taking advantage of the situation, it's forced Talad's hand to shut it down to prevent others from doing the same thing until it's fixed.

DEATH TO THE CHEATERS!

I also agree with one of the dev's explaining the exploit in this thread to explain how it worked exactly. Since the server won't be back up until it's fixed, and therefore no longer exploitable, it can't be any harm in telling us what actually happened. That way, as others have stated before, those who came by the exploit completely by accident or didn't realise it was an exploit have the chance to come forward. Besides, it's always nice to keep your underling players (read: bug trackers) here out of the dark on how exactly the development of PS is going, and what things have been fixed. Kind of like a development history of PS :)

I also would like to know if any of the guild houses have been bought using this "dirty" money. Will they be taken off the offending parties and re-auctioned? Not that I'll ever be close to being able to buy one myself LOL, exploits or not I've never had much luck in the way of earning tria (been playing almost 6 months now and still have most of my stats at 100, and no skill above 18, and that took alot of work!). But still, for the sake of others who HAVE been playing for years and have collected enough tria the RIGHT ways it's only fair any houses sold to cheaters be taken off them and auctioned again for legit players.

On a related note, do any of the dev's have at least an ETA on how much longer the server will be down? Has the offending code even been found yet? I undertsand the need to wait, but it would still be good to know at least a rough estimate on how long it might still be down for. I can't wait to get back to playing :)

Oh, I have another request:

6. A /pause command we can use for certain shortcuts. There may be occasions where we'd like the macro to pause for a specific time before continuing with the next command. For instance, I find that setting a macro to equip/dequip my two swords tends not to work well (it usually gets confused and only equips/dequips one of them, and I have to press the button again to make it listen to me). Adding a "/pause 1" command in this macro to make it pause for a second between commands might help the game not get confused and deal with them both one after the other instead of at once. This is just a simple example, and there are probably many other uses for such a command in macros.

5. I learned that you can examine another player and get their description by double clicking them. However, when double clicking an NPC, it tends to attack you. Any chance of changing this so it displays descriptions of NPC's when you double click them instead?

I believe this is configurable in the options currently, have you looked there?

Ahh, so it is. Thanks! For those who also didn't know this, it's under "Controls - Entities" in the options, you can change default double click options for other stuff too :)

I was debating about organising the Debian repository myself. I'm pretty sure with a bit of time and trial-and-error I could make a DEB repo for PlaneShift, and some other programs I feel would go well in a repository. While I DO have the server space available to do it, I don't have a high speed connection available to me. Which means, people will end up downloading PS or something else from the server at a whopping 1KB/sec, assuming no more than maybe 10 people are downloading at once!

But my first idea is making the DEBs for the x86, and then x64 versions of PS, which I might see if I can upload to a file server somewhere. If at some stage I can find a server I can upload to and turn into a repository, that would be awesome :)

Anyways, here's some of my ideas for PS:

1. Mining: It's irritating to sit by a rock and mine away at it for 20 minutes before getting anything. One idea I thought of is instead of having to do the whole /dig gold thing or press your shortcut every couple of seconds, have it set up some sort of variable interval time system where you sit your character by the rock, start to mine, and it stays there mining until the variable interval is reached (which would change depending on mining level). However, this may seem too much like automining for some. So an alternative I liked from one of the previous posts is the idea of...
2. Prospecting. Make a new prospecting skill that can be trained, and allow characters to use it in any location (to help them FIND mines) which maybe overlays a shaded area of varyingcolour and brightness that indicates within a certain radius (maybe 10 metres or so) where might good places to mine be for various minerals. The accuracy and detail of the overlay could change depending on the level, and maybe have a timer on it so it only lasts 1 hour IG.

OK, so those aren't THAT simple. These might be a little easier.

3. Some of us use the 'default' skin instead of the 'elves' skin. I've found it hard to read the first few lines of a book when editing it, since the top of the editing screen is dark and the text is black. Maybe change the image used for the book edit screen so it's easier to read, or even better, make the editing area look like the parchment used for normally reading the books, so it looks a bit more realistic.
4. It's a little hard to understand the damage system and such for weapons. For instance, a Short Sword has 2 speed and 2 damage. But obviously, when you hit an enemy with that sword, you don't usually end up doing 2 damage. Maybe some sort of information in either the info window of the weapon or in the stats window about what one's damage actually ranges from using the currently selected weapon, including modifiers from quality? Shouldn't be too hard to set up some sort of text field with an equasion in it that dynamically changes depending on a person's strength, weapon skill and quality etc., should it?
5. I learned that you can examine another player and get their description by double clicking them. However, when double clicking an NPC, it tends to attack you. Any chance of changing this so it displays descriptions of NPC's when you double click them instead?

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Re: graphics?
« on: September 01, 2007, 12:47:45 pm »
I have the same graphics issue. The thing is, it only happened recently. Tried the tips above, the didn't help. Tried reinstalling graphics drivers, didn't help either. I did the log, and it seemed to have issues starting with failing to find the GL extensions. Mean anything to anyone?

*edit*

I also thought I'd post a link to my log file. Hope it means something to someone!

It seems some of you don't seem to believe me when I say that the economy is being destroyed. Since most of you probably didn't read my thread on this, which was locked, I'll post it here.

From my understanding, the reason why we can no longer get a reasonable amount of gold is due to the dev's thinking that the economy was unbalanced with excess money. I would like to point out how badly flawed this idea is, and that drying up the gold mines has in fact shattered the economy in PS.

The few people who can be bothered standing around for hours to mine gold now, have to come back and charge more in auctions for their ore, sometimes up to 500T. This means smelters get less tria for smelting the gold and selling. The others are busy spending the little tria they have on training, which is ridiculously expensive, and then they have to mine again, which means they spend less time actually PLAYING the game. They have to train too, because the monsters are so difficult that newcomers can only barely kill rats, and no one is going to sit around and kill rats for several months before they can afford to train, so they will stop playing. Crafters will go out of business because not only is everyone too broke to buy their merchandise, but also their goods have to become even MORE expensive because smelters have to spend so much longer training to smelt stock for them, which means even fewer people will buy from them. People will be training less newcomers because they can't afford to fund them (and due to current flaws it's nigh impossible for a newcomer to get anywhere in the game without being handed weapons, armour or tria by someone else), so less new players will be wanting to play.

Apparently, the gold mines dried up to bring some "realism" into the game. Many players are considering leaving PS altogether because of these changes (myself included), and many more have already left.  Yes, you brought some realism alright: you brought upon the Yliakum Great Depression!

I am also quite aware that this isn't a bug. I do read. The fact that this issue with gold is not a bug makes the point even more clear: this is a deliberate event that is ruining the experience of PS.

Think of the current RL world situation: oil is becoming harder to come by. Due to this one resource being harder to get, the entire world market is under stress - not just fuel, but things like food, building, everything. The gold in PS has become FAR worse than our real life issues with oil. The entire market is falling apart, and it's hard enough as it is to train anything and now we'll have newbies having to sit in the Hy sewers for months on end killing rats so they can afford to buy a pick, train up ONE level of mining, and spend hours just to get 5 ore pieces.

At the current rate, PS will die off before the end of the year unless something is done to correct this mistake.

I'm assuming this is what Neko meant by the "main thread" on the economic issue, so I'll post here since my thread was locked.

Well, if it's what everyone else is stating, for several DAYS, then why are we still being left in the dark, and why hasn't it been fixed yet? Return the system to the way it was - it may not be perfect, but at least it didn't drive people away as much as the new system is! When a new, actual WORKING system is devised that WON'T utterly destroy the economy, and THEN implement it,  but please don't screw us in the meantime.

I love playing PS. The players are great, a much higher standard than other MMORPG's, and the concept of total open-ended RP is something I don't think any other game has truly touched on as much as PS has. But if I can't actually DO anything in the game because I have no money, and I can't get money because I don't have the training to do so because I need the money to train to begin with, then I don't see how I can truly enjoy this game.

Hi all

I'm trying to do this Joining the Guard quest, where one has to ask various NPC's about Thorian Gronk and his illegal dealings. I've gotten up to the point where Jayose tells me I need to ask an alchemist about him, but I've asked all the alchemists I can find in Hydlaa and not one of them seems to understand me! So far I've tried: About Thorian Gronk, About Thor Grok, About alchemy, About potion making, About potion, Jayose sent me, and About advanced alchemy, and I've asked Levrus, the alchemist in the arena, and the alchemist on top of the tavern. I asked Thorian about alchemy, and he mentions that he makes an illegal potion from forbidden plants in the Stone Labyrinths, but this doesn't seem to help either. Is this a bug, or do I and seemingly everyone online whenever I ask simply not know this quest? Most people don't even seem to know this quest exists!
