General Discussion / Re: Introductions
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:57:09 am »
Okay, thank you developers (honenstly). At least this is an improvement. But there is more, suggested by others, more or less). What I would like to see is:

1. a more detailed text for speech of not-introduced characters. The least thing should be something like "an Enkidukai says ..." or even better "a male Enkidukai says...". The best (imho) would be even more real-life. Something like "the Kran right from you says ..." or "the Ynnwin behind you says ...".

2. some kind of "memory" for introduced characters. I know it is impossible to have statistics about how often you talked to someobdy in the main chat upto now, as this can be heard by everybody. But I think it could go like this:

- I choose another player by clicking on him/her
- I just type something in the main chat and, no matter that everybody hears it, the system knows that I talk to the selected player. This way a statistic about how often/how long I talked to a specific player would be possible. And an even improved version of that could include a log about what you was talking about. There's a log anyway, so why not save conversations with specific characters in a specific file, so they could be seen in some way from within the game?

The reason why I ask for this: Too often, I see players saying just "hello" and begin to talk to me as if they know me. I am sure they do, but I don't know wherefrom. It could be that I helped them a year ago or something completely different. So I think such a function would help roleplaying greatly, as you even could refer in your conversation to something that was mentioned sometime before in another one.

Simply put: I hate the introduction system! I think (at least in its current state) it is a complete failure and even avoids in-character-gameplay.

My reasons:

1. It is annoying because it is far more OOC seeing just an introduction-message than having a newbie asking you in an in-character style without introducing him-/herself (imho).

2. It is annoying also, because instead of having an in-character introduction like someone saying "greetings, I am ..." you only see an introduction message that gives you no clue at all about the person itself. It takes away a lot of individuality from the process of meeting new people.

3.It is inconsistent, because consequently you shouldn't even be able to see a players name floating over the character or its history without introducing yourself. But that wold be even more annoying, imho.

the questnotes from earlier versions lie in a subfolder of the planshift-folder named "data". The file is called "qestnotes_yourCharName.xml". Not sure about the other versions, but on OSX that location has changed. You should look for info about that for your system. Then everything you need to do is to copy the questnotes file to the new location and they shoud reappear in the game next time you start it.

Anyone know if the new PlaneShift client going to reflect the 10.5.2 + Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates?
Graphics-Update in general seems to create problems with some other apps too. Not for me that is, but others talked about that on the net, so maybe it is best to avoid the Graphics-Update at the moment (as I do). I couldn't see any advantage by installing it anyway

Hi again,

thank you all for your extensive help on this matter. I tried each and every tip but as nothing seemed to help, I decided to reinstall my system completely. A big step just for being able to play a game, but I had enough time on my hands, so...  ;D

The bottom line is: Everything works fine now (or worked until the Server got sut down, haha). There were no graphical bugs or Freezes anymore, so the sole problem of it all seems to be Apples Graphic-Update, which I won't install anymore.

@ChaOs: I did apply both fixes as Caarrie suggested. And yes, I am the primary administrator, so to say. I have full control over my iMac

@Caarrie: overheating seems quite unlikely to me, as I played the actual Planeshift-release for about a week or two on 10.5.1 without any crashes. They first appeared when I updated the system to 10.5.2 and to the new graphics-drivers.

@Rennaj: yes, I ran Disk Utility and I verified Disk Permissions. On the other hand I didn't turn off any auto-loaded apps but these are just system-utilities. Nothing like APE, for example. The only one that probably patches part of the system would be DefaultFolder, but I really don't think that it touches anything of the graphics-part. The problem with the graphics-drivers is that the old ones aren't available anymore. Plus, as Apple didn't provide enough information as usual in their Auto-Update-Window i don't even know, if my graphics-driver was updated. I only *assume* that it has something to do with it (or with the 10.5.2 update, for that matter), because these system-freezes began after these updates. And upto now they never happened when I was doing something else than playing Planeshift.

Hi again,

and thanks to Caarrie, though it didn't help. I don't know if my question was one of the reasons for the "read before posting..."-sticky. But anyway, I wanted to point out that before I asked about the graphics problem I in fact read the stickies regarding various issues but to me it didn't seem as if anything in there would solve my problems, especially as I do not run planeshift on an intel-Mac nor do I have an ATI-card installed (mine has an NVidia GeForce MX 4. I guess I should have pointed that out in the first place, sorry for that.

Nevertheless, I tried Caarries tip, and it didn't change anything. I probably should have been answering earlier but I had other, more important things to do, sorry about that. So the bottom line is that after the update of the graphics-drivers and after I applied the changes to the config-file my iMac G4 still froze twice, completely and I can't see any pattern in it, it just happened after some hours of playing. It's a bit annoying (the problem itself, I mean) and slightly frightening as I have no other app that freezes the whole computer and switching the Mac off manually always leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, so to say.

As some others stated I also think that if the devs think a full wipe is unavoidable, then it would be okay for me. That's the first IF.

The second (also stated by others): IF the "character-specific" things are kept. In other words: If players keep their character (name and description). I think I am not the only one who, after a while of just playing for advancement, began to roleplay, more or less, and therefore chose the character name on purpose (though I won't say the name in here ;-) ). Also I (as well as others) invested some time in writing a good description for the own character. That's why I think the second IF is essential.

General Discussion / Re: Quest wipe.
« on: February 16, 2008, 02:35:24 pm »
If people would not run around and collect quest in bunches, instead of completing them as they get them - one for one, then they would not be stuck with broken quests. I have completed all quests! The ones that I couldn't (two in fact) had a glitch.

First of all, this is nonsense because it is clearly stated that there were bugs in some quests.

Second, some people might have done a mistake in one quest and can't repeat it, some even in important quests which give access the the Whinch.

Third, some might find it interesting to redo quests they had trouble with and (this time) don't get mad about silly/non-reacting NPCs but appreciate more what is really involved like the (now corrected?) reaction of the NPCs.

Fourth, if it is needed to properly test the quests and/or look for still existing bugs, I say, do it, as it is for a development of the game as a whole.

And last but not least: I don't know about you, but I just don't want to walk around for years just to complete quests. I simply see no sense in doing just one quest after the other simply because I had to walk long paths between the cities over and over and over again with no end and which gets oh-so-boring after a very short while.

So, I voted ***yes*** for a complete quest wipe, removing everything, factions, items and access to the Whinch.

Hi all,

first of all, I play Planeshift on an iMac G4, equipped with a GeForce4 MX.

Just after I updated Leopard to 10.5.2 and also installed the graphics-update (drivers, as far as I know) and when I restarted Planeshift it was a lot more lagging than before (at least it felt like that). Plus, it seems to me as if there are a lot more graphical bugs now (textures "blinking", becoming invisble and reappearing). But the worst thing is that after the update the whole system froze completely three times. That never happened before and it only happened while I was playing Planeshift.

While I am aware this happened because I renewed Apple-Software, it still might be related to something in Planeshift itself. Did anyone else experience something similar?

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Nkaw's quest

thanks for pointing me to the bug-report. So, if I understand it right, the quest is kind of broken at the moment and we have to wait until the bottles are back again?

I've been to ... to get an empty bottle, but it fell down and now I am stuck, though I said exactly what I should (and lots of other variants). Could it be that there's something wrong with this quest?) Or could someone point me in the direction on what to say to Jomed (I guess it is him) after the bottle droped down?

Server Status / Re: NPC's down 2 days? (client .3.20)

Is this the reason why the cook in Kada Els is gone (for about a week) now? This is most annoying as I need him to solve a quest or two.

Hi all,

just wanted to say that I finally found the problem. Had read about the "fullbright"-solution but didn't read the guide quite right. When I changed that CMD-config-file as it should be (had linebreaks in it instead of spaces) BronzeDoors loaded.

Can only say sorry for the inconvenience and for bothering you with something I should have found out myself.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Slow...
« on: January 28, 2008, 05:55:53 pm »
maybe it doesn't make that much of an impact, but what I did to speed up Planeshift was the following:

- play in windowed mode (not fullscreen) and used 800 to 600 pixels). if you still want to have kind of fullscreen-experience you can use the zooming-feauture of OSX (this has to be enabled in the "keyboard & Mouse Systemprefs -> Mouse/Zoom using scroll wheel while holding..." I set the option to only scroll the screen when the pointer reaches the edge of the visible area). What it does, basically, is that when I press the ctrl-key and use my scroll-weel it zooms into the whole screen. I do this until the Planeshift-Window fills the visible area as much as possible.
- turn most of the music off (apart from the sounds when buttons and such things are clicked)
- when in cities I use a camera-distance of around 30 to 40. The sight isn't that beautiful, but at least I can walk around in a fairly good speed. (in wilderness it is no problem to set it to around 150, maybe even more, but this is good enough to find your way)
- as someone else suggested, I set the framerate as high as possible and it really made a difference.

Hope this helps.

BTW: I am playing Planeshift on an iMac G4 (1 GHz with a 64-MB Gfx-Card (nVidia gForce 4 mX) and with 2 GB RAM
