Hi all,

first of all, I play Planeshift on an iMac G4, equipped with a GeForce4 MX.

Just after I updated Leopard to 10.5.2 and also installed the graphics-update (drivers, as far as I know) and when I restarted Planeshift it was a lot more lagging than before (at least it felt like that). Plus, it seems to me as if there are a lot more graphical bugs now (textures "blinking", becoming invisble and reappearing). But the worst thing is that after the update the whole system froze completely three times. That never happened before and it only happened while I was playing Planeshift.

While I am aware this happened because I renewed Apple-Software, it still might be related to something in Planeshift itself. Did anyone else experience something similar?

Hi again,

and thanks to Caarrie, though it didn't help. I don't know if my question was one of the reasons for the "read before posting..."-sticky. But anyway, I wanted to point out that before I asked about the graphics problem I in fact read the stickies regarding various issues but to me it didn't seem as if anything in there would solve my problems, especially as I do not run planeshift on an intel-Mac nor do I have an ATI-card installed (mine has an NVidia GeForce MX 4. I guess I should have pointed that out in the first place, sorry for that.

Nevertheless, I tried Caarries tip, and it didn't change anything. I probably should have been answering earlier but I had other, more important things to do, sorry about that. So the bottom line is that after the update of the graphics-drivers and after I applied the changes to the config-file my iMac G4 still froze twice, completely and I can't see any pattern in it, it just happened after some hours of playing. It's a bit annoying (the problem itself, I mean) and slightly frightening as I have no other app that freezes the whole computer and switching the Mac off manually always leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, so to say.

Try applying both the ATI fix at the texture compression fix mentioned in the IMPORTANT1 in the Guide. Also, are you logged in as the primary administrator?

the texture compression fix is default for this currect release unless the player manually changed it, i would have to think you are over heating your pc, that is all i can think of that would cause this issue if the other fixes have not helped. and just because you dont have a specific card or system does not mean that the fix does not apply to you or your situtation.

Shooting in dark here, as I am 10.4.11, first thing is did you run Disk Utilities, Verify Disk Permissions. [Run repair if needed] after updating. you could also try turning off any Application that starts up on login of computer,if still same place in 10.5, will be accounts in System Preferences. Also if still having problems, try reinstalling graphic drivers.
Hope this helps.
Run your permissions at least once a week. You will be amazed what it can solve.

@ChaOs: I did apply both fixes as Caarrie suggested. And yes, I am the primary administrator, so to say. I have full control over my iMac

@Caarrie: overheating seems quite unlikely to me, as I played the actual Planeshift-release for about a week or two on 10.5.1 without any crashes. They first appeared when I updated the system to 10.5.2 and to the new graphics-drivers.

@Rennaj: yes, I ran Disk Utility and I verified Disk Permissions. On the other hand I didn't turn off any auto-loaded apps but these are just system-utilities. Nothing like APE, for example. The only one that probably patches part of the system would be DefaultFolder, but I really don't think that it touches anything of the graphics-part. The problem with the graphics-drivers is that the old ones aren't available anymore. Plus, as Apple didn't provide enough information as usual in their Auto-Update-Window i don't even know, if my graphics-driver was updated. I only *assume* that it has something to do with it (or with the 10.5.2 update, for that matter), because these system-freezes began after these updates. And upto now they never happened when I was doing something else than playing Planeshift.

I dont have the same mac as you [macbook intel gma 3100] but i have had a few issues [no crashes though] since the new update here, so all for now we can hope is they release a patch soon. For me screen res as selected for ps does not run at that res but a sightly smaller res which it never did before this update. and Rennaj that link takes me to a blank page.

Hi again,

thank you all for your extensive help on this matter. I tried each and every tip but as nothing seemed to help, I decided to reinstall my system completely. A big step just for being able to play a game, but I had enough time on my hands, so...  ;D

The bottom line is: Everything works fine now (or worked until the Server got sut down, haha). There were no graphical bugs or Freezes anymore, so the sole problem of it all seems to be Apples Graphic-Update, which I won't install anymore.

Anyone know if the new PlaneShift client going to reflect the 10.5.2 + Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates?

I mean I'd kinda expect it to, but the updates are quite recent...

Graphics-Update in general seems to create problems with some other apps too. Not for me that is, but others talked about that on the net, so maybe it is best to avoid the Graphics-Update at the moment (as I do). I couldn't see any advantage by installing it anyway

Okay I'm running:
 MacOSX 1.5.2
 Leopard Graphics Update 1.0
 Keyboard Update 1.0

Hardware:
 MacBook (late 2007 model - 3,1)
CPU:  Intel Core 2 Duo (2.2 GHz)
 RAM:  2 x 512 667MHz DDR2
Graphics:  Intel GMA X3100 (144MB VRAM)

Internet:
 8Mbit Cable

I tried PS 0.4.0 last night.  In terms of Graphics, the tutorial ran PERFECTLY.  When I transported to start the actual game everything kinda jerked to a halt.  I'm still new, so forgive me not being able to know where I am exactly (I'm a Kran, there's a giant crystal building, I think its the temple of Talad).

Some graphics don't show, I have missing textures for most of the little wooden post things that look like they could double as seats for the dwarves.  The game seems to slow down when other players spawn, while it waits for them to load.  I went to the top of the Talad Temple and spent about half an hour trying to get back down.  The game kept halting.

I've turned the draw distance right down and applied both the texture compression & OpenGL fixes in the release thread.

But no luck.

Edit:
I made a new character and ended up starting in Hydlaa this evening.  I had far less problems and there wasn't much lag at all, though this may have been due to the fact that there were less people on than when I was out and about before.  The only graphic anomalies I saw were: signposts, apples, and other things are the default dwarf model.  When going through passage-ways and zone gates the image kinda does this weird thing... repeating itself over and over as I move.  Floor textures are completely missing and I have to take a "leap of faith" trusting that there's an invisible floor there.  When I exit the passage way it all returns to normal.

DOES ANYONE KNOW..... is there a quick and easy way to remove the graphics update??  I didn't bother to set up Time Machine and my install.log tells me that the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 included some 485 files.  I tried the apple forums but to no avail.

I have a newer macbook and i also have the same lagging/freezing in gugrontid. I have heard there are some windoze users that have this same issue. Not much we can do for now. [10.5.2 with same updates as you]
