The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: R.I.P. Gary Gygax, co-creator of D&D
« on: March 08, 2008, 01:41:25 am »
I was pretty upset when I heard.  I was fortunate enough to have actually played 2nd Ed with Gary Gygax at a convention many many years ago.  Afterwards I asked him to sign some of my dice, but dice are small and the signature didn't come out well.  The dice then became somewhat unlucky, I don't know why; and for ages after my friends and I would refer to a bad dice roll as a 'Gary'.  I still have them, won't ever sell 'em.

It just all seems very back-to-front really, it should be the players who die, not the Dungeon Master.

General Discussion / Re: Do enkies purr?
« on: March 08, 2008, 12:35:51 am »
I don't think the wiki should be ammended (much less taken down) due to non-canonical content on the subject of language.

This is a roleplaying game, and as such you have to expect some elements of character culture to develop from player interaction.  Not everything has to be spelled out 'to the T' by the game designers when it comes to the subject of character society... the social element of the game will evolve just as any other society's culture evolves over time.  e.g. 20 years ago no one would have known what you were talking about if you told them "i'm going to put some mp3s on my ipod", but now it's commonplace... no government passed laws on the creation of these words, they evolved naturally to reflect changes in culture and commerce.

It is thus expected that the user-created languages on the wiki reflect "para-language", they may not be official words but they can be understood by subcultures within the game (namely those that have learnt those languages).

Thus it stands to reason that some Enkies do indeed purr.  But as the Enkies are an intelligent race, some may choose not to purr, some may find purring socially unacceptable (like humans with burping), some may purr only in certain circumstances, others may purr uncontrollably.

The importance is that if you want your Enkie to purr, then purr away.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Re: Combat Bug
« on: March 05, 2008, 02:56:04 pm »
Funny, I can't attack anything.

I killed rats in the tutorial... but haven't been able to kill anything else.

It doesn't come up with the attack icon when I right click.  If I try to attack it by using the command, it tells me I don't have permission.  This is true for everything I've encountered so far in the game, including sewers earlier today.

  Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression  = false

  Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Vertex=false

Okay I'm running:
 MacOSX 1.5.2
 Leopard Graphics Update 1.0
 Keyboard Update 1.0

Hardware:
 MacBook (late 2007 model - 3,1)
CPU:  Intel Core 2 Duo (2.2 GHz)
 RAM:  2 x 512 667MHz DDR2
Graphics:  Intel GMA X3100 (144MB VRAM)

Internet:
 8Mbit Cable

I tried PS 0.4.0 last night.  In terms of Graphics, the tutorial ran PERFECTLY.  When I transported to start the actual game everything kinda jerked to a halt.  I'm still new, so forgive me not being able to know where I am exactly (I'm a Kran, there's a giant crystal building, I think its the temple of Talad).

Some graphics don't show, I have missing textures for most of the little wooden post things that look like they could double as seats for the dwarves.  The game seems to slow down when other players spawn, while it waits for them to load.  I went to the top of the Talad Temple and spent about half an hour trying to get back down.  The game kept halting.

I've turned the draw distance right down and applied both the texture compression & OpenGL fixes in the release thread.

But no luck.

Edit:
I made a new character and ended up starting in Hydlaa this evening.  I had far less problems and there wasn't much lag at all, though this may have been due to the fact that there were less people on than when I was out and about before.  The only graphic anomalies I saw were: signposts, apples, and other things are the default dwarf model.  When going through passage-ways and zone gates the image kinda does this weird thing... repeating itself over and over as I move.  Floor textures are completely missing and I have to take a "leap of faith" trusting that there's an invisible floor there.  When I exit the passage way it all returns to normal.

DOES ANYONE KNOW..... is there a quick and easy way to remove the graphics update??  I didn't bother to set up Time Machine and my install.log tells me that the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 included some 485 files.  I tried the apple forums but to no avail.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: How do you get rid of Pigeons?
« on: March 04, 2008, 10:08:56 am »
I live on the 16th floor of a building and pigeons seem to love my balcony.  How can I get rid of them when there is some nasty old woman feeding them in the parking lot next door. I call her nasty because she drives over to the parking lot to feed them when she could feed them at home. Does rice really cause them to explode? Is there a more benign method that I could use?

I cannot take these flying rats much longer.

There are three sure-fire ways of defeating the Rats of the Air:
1. Poison them
2. Put spikes on your balcony so they cannot land
3. Buy an eagle or hawk

I personally recommend the third option.  Aside from being the option of professionals, employing a Bird of Prey adheres to the Law of Nature amongst the bird kingdom.  And when all your pigeons have gone, the hawk/eagle will fly off to find more pigeons to eat, thus benefitting other neighbourhoods and making YOU a good citizen.

Plus you could train the hawk/eagle to attack the rat feeder.

Anyone know if the new PlaneShift client going to reflect the 10.5.2 + Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates?

I mean I'd kinda expect it to, but the updates are quite recent...
