I've done a little investigating to see if I can give a better idea of the problem.

I have reinstalled and updated a fresh copy of PS 0.4.03 and done a little diffing between my old install and the new one.  There were only a few differences in the file data (listed below)

Interestingly enough, if I remove my planeshift.cfg file from ~/Library/Application Support/Planeshift/ and launch psclient, my fonts render OK.  When I restart planeshift, using the auto-generated planeshift.cfg file, the font spacing is all messed up.

... So.. my first-cut workaround seems to be to delete my planeshift.cfg file before running... kinda annoying..

Meh, almost enough to drive oneself back to Linux..

Hi Caarrie,

Thanks for replying.  It's useful to know that 10.5.6 is working correctly for you.

I guess it could be something to do with my installation, or possibly even the fonts/drivers in use at this end.

The following are my System stats,
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Model Name: MacBook Pro (4,1)
      Memory: 4 GB
      Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
      VRAM (Total): 512 MB
          Resolution: 1440 x 900
ProductVersion:   10.5.6

Mac OSX Specific Issues / OSX 10.5.6 (intel) Rendering issue? (PS 0.4.03)
« on: December 16, 2008, 03:50:55 pm »
Apple have recently released an update to MacOSX, version 10.5.6.  Is anybody else having problems using 10.5.6?

Since applying the OSX update, my psclient is not working correctly.  For example,  the black-gray gradient background to speech bubbles is not drawing across the entire speech bubble, and text is not rendering correctly.

The attached image shows missing letters, and parts of letters, both in the red notice text (missing parts of 'e', and the 'l' is almost entirely gone), and in the chat window which also has problems with it's text rendering.

Any thoughts?

Agreed, I could raise yet another item in the bug tracker, I'm posting here to try to generate a discussion.  It's more correct to have a discussion about development missteps here than in the bugs system imho.

I do wish the devs would stop 'fixing' things unnecessarily however.  In this case, the ps team has worsened the gameplay and that will only serve to cost the game it's players/testers.   You can't lose sight of the fact that players have real lives, and a finite amount of time to spend in character, in game.  Too many decisions are being taken in the name of roleplay, that add nothing to the gameplay and general enjoyment .

That the old books system wasn't ideal, granted.  The bodge has been created however, by removing the save button, not improving the gui, and forcing players to resort to pen& paper or screenshots is infinitely worse however.

I too, am annoyed and upset by not being able to save books as text, for later reading.  This change is not a positive one, it lessens the game, and makes it much less enjoyable and more difficult to play.  This is not a good thing.

The ingame interface for reading books is horrible at present, and while it does need a complete rewrite/redesign, I do believe that whatever solution will be reached will not be as suitable as what can be done with text files in a "proper" editor/office program.

If nothing else, having text files stored locally, will allow books to be read when the server is offline, badly lagged, or local internet is down.

I think that a history button to recall previously read books is a great idea, however this system should work from text files, which are stored locally on each player's hard drive.

Okay, so i'm posting this to make sure it isn't a bug, and that the devs are aware.

In general, the latest release gets a big thumbs up.  I'm very happy that the lighting across most maps is now generally brighter - I can actually see where i'm going now, good stuff.  I'm still affected by bug # 1923, my character keeps stoppping his attack, which is annoying, and the stamina dump bug is still happening. Ah well.

The new maps seem to be more detailed, terrain is hillier, and has more bumps than betore.

Unfortunately, this is where things start to fall down.   It seems that the ground level has changed, particularly at gugrontid.    There are floating objects & players + npcs running around in mid air. There are also several new invisible walls, and in several spots, the player's avatar seems to run through the new hills, rather than up & over.

In particular it is difficult to climb up to the mines, and now very easy to fall off.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: [Event] Stampede!

I was among the group that followed the riverlings out of the city.  Unfortunately, we lost them...  they scattered into the wilderness on bdroad1,. After that, I turned and headed back into the plaza.

I forgot to take screenshots too.  I did manage to get a bunch from the plaza at the end however:
