Sorry for the short answer, it's just too early in the morning  X-/

You can go to the Jayose library. There are some really great books which give an idea of what will be implemented in-game one day ;)

Thank you, I'll look into that and maybe it can help answer my questions.

And Mordraugion thank you too for your post (i see i forgot to in my last post)

"1- Don't try to outdo other players or the Setting of PlaneShift. Make your story and home interesting, but keep it within reason. It puts other players in an awkward situation if they have to try to either accept your outlandish claims, see your character as insane, or explain out of character why you could not have come from that place. It is not pleasant in any case."

I think i did this to the best of my ability, i just cannot finish my character background till i have a better idea of where i am from *Shrugs* I will get it eventually, i have been researching bits here and there on my off time.

2- Your character was born in Yliakum. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. There are no unapproved distant kingdoms beyond the Stone Labyrinths or on the surface. No character has been to the surface (if indeed there is a surface). There are no current portals to or from other worlds. There are no mysterious hidden cities that no one has ever heard of before.

Already thought of that too

3- ALL race (Kran and Lemur aside) homelands and histories are lost to the past, and have been so for hundreds of years. No character is old enough to have come through the portals or remember why there is no record of what happened to the homelands. There is an In-Character reason for that, and it is not open for debate. Kadiakos is also off limits as a birthplace. As far as all current characters go, there is only Yliakum.

*Shrugs* Seems like a hole in thing's right there as far as IC reason's go? It's a great rule if the story writers are planning to expand on this in the future.

4- Your character was not born in a city that was destroyed in a great race war. That is final.

Also not a worry

5- Yliakum is not relatively large. Any point can be reached in a matter of days.

Makes having an excuse for being ignorant of the world all that much harder no?

6- No part of Yliakum allows slavery.

Also not a worry

7- That does not mean you have to settle for mundane if you do not wish. As you have read in Character Creation, there have been many good and bad happenings in the past. Creatures or bandits could have attacked your village (but do not make yourself the only cliché survivor). Perhaps you were born in the Stone Labyrinths or other interesting (existing) place, such as the Temple of Laanx. There is a lot of leeway in what you can do as long as you use a bit of common sense.

*Shrugs* that's fine but my character does not need leeway since his background is not intended to be exotic.

Where do Ylians live in small and medium populations? I need somewhere that there are farms and small towns that would not be out of place (and what large town would be closest to it?) Hydlaa could work i suppose as the nearest town... And i guess my character may have reasons for not knowing the town... These are questions though that if asked my character needs to have the answers to correct?

And if the world is not that big then should not others know about the places? I've run into people several times from different states that knew people i knew or that i knew directly... If any place in Yliakum can be reached in days... Should not there be those that know near every nook and cranny?

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Help in character background creation?
« on: November 04, 2008, 11:10:49 pm »
The first and biggest problem i have is choosing where my character came from, My character is a Ylian that came to Hydlaa Looking to become a Blacksmith's apprentice. i am looking for some place obscure, not because it needs to be exotic but rather it needs to be someplace mundane... Like a simple farm or a small village.

Now this is something specific because i do not want to choose to be from somewhere then ask directions to find my way around...

And second would deal with any information my character should know/be learning as a miner/blacksmith, such as related RP stories, in game Books, quests and scholars. These are not my characters only interests, just his main ones..

Now my character is agile and he puts pride in his accuracy with a hammer, he also has an excited interest in anything magical but is ignorant to the specifics. He is not interested in religion and laws (not to say he would not follow the law such as putting his pick away in town.) and lastly is interested in any knowledge found through sages and books when he decides to take a break from mining and smithing. (this part is more personal background information)

I'm trying to get in character as much as possible, i have been looking around the forums for a few days and probably will be for about another half a week before i start playing my character again. Any help is appreciated.

General Discussion / Re: Roleplay Dismay No Way!!!
« on: November 04, 2008, 11:29:54 am »
Well i do love it when people RP... But the thing is i am new and not so great at it... I had a struggle trying to act drunk correctly in keeping with my characters personality (although i think i will invent some tavern jokes and games later if i get a chance)

Now some players not participating irk's me slightly but rude players irritate me more... I would prefer help from a leet speaking but kind and well intended child as opposed to crusader who tries to skewer any outlander who scarcely speaks his language and only accepts an elite circle of guardians to be worthy to set foot on to his land. (this is not directed towards someone and i am not saying anyone here is like that)

Roleplay + 5 points
Kindness + 5 points
poor roleplay speaking - maximum number of points + 8 (given he follows the top two and how poor his ) minimum number -5 (anything below 1 deals with behavior)
Outright being mean to other players just because they do not RP (but do not intend any harm) to simply RPing poorly 0 to - 5 points (point variable depends on behavior)
Maturity (not lack of) + points

Now starting from rouge and earlier games... i have played hundreds if not thousands of games and i always wanted to find a (non text) RP game with what you here call "Game mechanics" so realize that i do not take people affecting my experience in it lightly... But i also think a person and their feelings should be valued above RP (and admittedly in some cases my point system shows that under some conditions i only hold a slight higher opinion for people who do not have the patience to try)

"Maybe a few less names like "Elfy Earpoint"."

I chose the last name Elvenspirit, now admittedly it's from getting fed up with trying to find an accessible name... But whenever i introduce myself it is done so with only my first name, i see no need to tell most people... If anyone my last name, My apologies if i took characters not knowing another's name till told too seriously... I was also trying to consider how hard it was to make my first name and how difficult it can get to find a unique name the more and more characters (not people... Characters) are made. Maybe i am guilty of breaking the rules :S My first name is certainly unique though and it is not as if Elven sub races do not exist :(

"The GM team does try to do their best. It is not an easy job that I would ever want. Sometimes how they handle things are not always to everyone's liking. As I said it is a hard job."

This is a very important point, and one many people NEVER even bother to consider. People have excessive expectations of others in authority positions, they are like us... Maybe there are guidelines like there often are for such positions of course, and probably a lot of them complain just as much about the players often not holding up their standards either (if they know it or not) maybe some innocent bystander who intended no harm even?

Of course a moderator in most games seems to be chosen partially by their ability to deal with such situations... But that does not mean that they are perfect - People view thing's differently or people make mistakes... I'm sure there are moderators or admins that go "Oh please tell me he/she did not say that" but for any person that has one idea there are normally at the very least an equal number of people that have a different look on it (and more often than not it's just a muddle of them)

This is what people need to look past, no matter how strongly you feel about something you need to consider more than yourself IF you wish to even attempt to make a considerate opinion.

"so when I am RPing and a newbie comes up to us to ask where they can kill something [unless they ask the question the right way to make it IC (without all the acronyms and such)] then I usually ignore them, usually doing so by standing very still and saying nothing. If it is not a busy RP I'll show them and stuff."

I say put information on how to get help in game with as much instructions on RP as possible, Direct them to a "New Player" guide that does just that (while only going OOC when absolutely a necessity... Do not overdo the RP and forsake lack of clarity)

I understand where you are coming from but understand that you are being just as unsocial (the player is doing it by not participating in the social activity and you by not being social in return)

"but we invite every single lesser-being to play this game"

... That comment is just unforgivable, you have no right to assume you are better than someone... Yes if someone does something criminal such as mugging then what they did was wrong, no i would not want to associate with that person... But they are not less than human and you are not more than human.

"Runescape kiddies looking for a free game, for example"

There are more people (not a larger percent...) that try to roleplay in that game than are even in this game... And i have met a great deal of wonderful people that play that game. No i do not like the general community, but let's get thing's straight... If this game had such a large community then it would be extremely difficult if not impossible (even with being aggressive) to keep the population well behaved, yes admittedly it is partially because this game is free - and i do not think this community would fall that low... But i think a certain awareness should be kept that the first step in a community like that is a progressive decline in friendliness and respect for the common player. I understand how you came to your view... But he without sin throw the first stone. (no i am not religious but i think the point is sound as long as you understand it)

"I also have personally seen PLers that really don't want to do the "RP thing right now, but might try it later","

And that's a mixed bag i think, i am sure most of us would love to see them RP

"Definitely not more than RPers who stop roleplaying to rudely "correct" other players and tell them how to do it "properly". An unwelcoming community can be the biggest barrier for a game to reach more users."

And this goes both ways, a non roleplayer should probably try to make an effort to make a roleplayer feel welcome also, i feel that this is the center of this debate... Keep in mind though that both sides are guilty, it would be sad for this issue to turn into a witch hunt :(

I realize there are others who have felt as i do and gotten fed up with thing's, and that is something that saddens me. But realize that instead of trying to rally the support of GM's to force the change we should try even harder to encourage other's to RP, i do not mean to force other's into RP - i mean let's try to structure everything as best as possible to make it easier for other's to roleplay, Then maybe with GM help try to make it so people who choose not to roleplay can fit into the game somehow and still be in character... The only solutions i can see involve either hand signals or unique area's and such for non RP'ers, the latter i do not like as it discourages RP and the former may be too harsh unless thorough (with the option for RPers to "speak their language")

Now encouraging non RP'ers to participate with RP'ers in activities? Maybe. I do think a better solution though would be to create conduct rules... With the condition that players must keep borderline in chat when answering questions - just specific in game answers like i do not like mining or the square is that way, mundane responses sure... But while it is my choice if i wish to discuss my life with someone, i do think it should be discouraged... And i also think better spelling should be encouraged... This is both helpful for foreign players and children who may be learning from our community.

In essence, encourage maturity safety and clarity... I realize my grammar is not the best and i apologize for that, and i also apologize for being long winded -.-

Forum and Website Discussions / I apologise for my post the other day.
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:20:52 pm »
Well i do not know where to post this but i hope this is the appropriate place, i have a few reasons for this post which i will explain as i go.

The first part of this post is an apology towards the person that had to moderate my prior post.

Well sometimes i cannot understand thing's when i read, i had read the rules for the wish-list forum
http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=21400.0 but i could not understand a certain part at the time...

"and only if NONE of the following apply:"

No matter how many times i read it the other night the words just did not make sense, and i was eager to say what i wanted to before i forgot it.

Now i have had similar thing's happen like this before on on occasion under trivial circumstances... Not post deletion, just not being able to comprehend a few odd lines at the time. Now i admit i am not big on following rules if i do not feel they are reasonable, but the rules stated were reasonable. (this is my way of saying i do not hold it against anyone for doing their job, and that i was on the wrong in this... But i feel i need to explain why because i think not explaining why would be dishonest of me)

(i posted this in the forum due to the fact i was not told who moderated my post, and i assume if i was not messaged by this person that i do not need to know. This allows the person to retain anonymity and me to apologize at the same time i hope.)

---

Now the second is a question i really hope can be answered (just to be clear this entire post is a different subject) without being deleted, and for the record technically this post can probably be considered against the rules too under -

A)     * Debates bans, warnings, Game Master or moderator actions.

Any inquiries or comments are to be sent in private messages or via email. A moderator may choose to publicly inform the participants of the forum about bans and warnings if this is in the interest of the forum. For further information on GM issues, check the "Reporting In-Game Abuse" thread.

And B) Re-post the same topic or material of a thread that has been closed by a moderator, or continue the closed discussion through a new thread. (depending on interpretation)

Is it possible in the future that if i make a similar mistake that whoever moderated it could inform me of what i did? I i strongly suspect that it has to do with the amount of time i have been here after i have read the rules on a different day (sometimes reading something anywhere from a few hours to months later i can understand what i missed)  But i do have some disabilities such as memory problems and sometimes misunderstanding what is wrote even if one would think it should be clear (which although i felt that if written differently i would have understood it the rules normally would have been clear) i admit that i am probably a little bit OCD (yes that is worded wrong if you consider what the words are i know...) and i most likely take this more serious than the person who moderated this, and i really do not want to feel like i need to avoid the forums just because i goof up once in a while. (that has nothing to do with you guys, just the OCD thing.)

Even if the topic is deleted if someone could just make sure my apology is given to the right person i would be fine with that. (providing i knew it was given otherwise i would feel like a... well)

Wish list / Re: Spell eating spell
« on: November 02, 2008, 05:28:51 am »
Well i think Healing spells should only be allowed given that the character trust's another character, it could be programmed where you could enable RP switches which indicates your character is trusting of only certain conditions... Race? Party? Clan?

There is any number of conditions that could be set such as changing your profile description depending on what race's (or players) are around.

Wish list / Re: Zorbels First Wish
« on: November 02, 2008, 04:27:42 am »
Well my father has run tournaments in card sites, in my opinion you need more than one person dedicated to running a tournament...

We could have weekly (or even daily) tournaments if done correctly... Do not discredit the players please.

The biggest problem is when this was done we all had been in phone contact.... If someone could not make a tournament then all he did was check on messenger then if that did not work he called other TD's till he found someone.

The thing you need to understand though... Any potential TD will need to be TRAINED and one tournament a month would not do for that! ^_^

How had these tournaments been run? All done by hand?

Sorry i do not visit the arena and i am pretty new to planeshift :S

Also depending on how thing's are set up... I could give advice on how to structure thing's?

Edit: Well to be clear on things i am saying i might be able to help organize things at first, what my dad did was run by players (and still exists today even though he retired from it.)

Maybe between me and Zorbels we could get thing's started up? Keep in mind i am not saying you need to run it Zorbels... But i think maybe we could come up with a format of how things should be run (although improvement may need to be made later)

The biggest problem is what i possibly have in mind calls for a limited amount of GM involvement (which may or may not be a problem), not by running the tournament but... At the very least some form of structure could be made.

Now the difference i see in this is that there could be so many different event types made to be run by players if only we had the structure... Hunt's - Tournaments - Festivals (Planeshift holidays and the sort?) A similar structure (on the TD end anyway) for all of these events will be key to making it that a group of people could easily switch roles when needed correct?

No matter how good someone is at something... A single person doing something is always more taxing on a person's abilities than a group correct?

General Discussion / A few questions
« on: November 02, 2008, 04:11:50 am »
Are there any plan's for these?

Character specific skills -

--Running-- (run augmented either by endurance or speed through a skill when below X weight)

I think this should be added considering some characters should simply be able to outrun others no? I also think there should be two different speed's above walk instead of one (jogging and run)

Weight should greatly impact run but not as much for a fast hiking speed or jog

--Travel--

Well as many of us know training helps when traveling while weighted down, lets face it... If you do not know how to pack you will not be able to travel as easily... Also you will need experience traveling with a heavy pack for your body to get used to it correct?

This would be independent from current weight penalties (and realistically there is enough to warrant similar skill's for armor worn while traveling...)

Animation change during X condition

Are there any plan's for your character to become winded and slow down before his/her endurance gives out? And what about the possibility that becoming drunk would make you unable to run (or jog or whatever) for a while as well as making you stagger or fight worse (or depending maybe even preform better)

Really who's to say dwarves do not fight and mine better drunk?

Now i know that height and weight also come in to the factor, A dwarven ball of muscle is not going to beat a agile elf like race in a foot race... But he most likely will with both of them carrying a large pack of ore (or wearing chainmail)

Anyway on a side note - racial advantage in travel is really no different than other racial differences in planeshift.
