The tilde '~' is a shortcut for the directory '/Users/<name>'. If the program does not realize this, then the program is designed poorly. I would recommend contacting the program's creator, or if it's a PS function, I would post a report using bugtracker.

If the OpenGL engine is crashing while attempting to run an application, you may need to update your graphics card driver. Mac OS X is usually good about doing this in software updates. If you haven't already, try updating to 10.5.6 if possible (I would avoid 10.5.7 for now if you can... if not, just go ahead and update to 10.5.7).
