I agree, they *are* a lot alike.  In fact, if you crank up the sensitivity of the mouselook, set it into third person mode, and use the awsd movement setup, planeshift even has nearly identical controls to morrowind.

Mind you, you can jump a lot farther in morrowind without hurting yourself, and it\'s a lot easier to gain skills.  Of course, Planeshift is an online game and thus worlds better, at least as long as it continues to improve.  In fact, the only two RPGs I have on my computer right now are Morrowind and Planeshift... >.>  Planeshift is getting played more.

I think that as planeshift develops, we\'ll start seeing more similarities probably in skill development, ease of gameplay, and world size that render it more like morrowind, and player interaction, crafting, and world persistence that render it a lot less like morrowind.  Both of which are quite good.

Well, after going away and playing with some other things for awhile in my spare time, I\'ve discovered that my ISP has a near-total block on almost all ports above 6000.  Isn\'t that nice of them?  They deny it, but I\'ve tested it with other networks, sooo...Time to switch ISPs.  Thanks for putting up with me. ;)

Seems I\'m not the only one having problems connecting...Natty -  Who\'s your ISP?  What operating system are you using?  Were you able to run PS before the update?

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw the other thread.  You really should make only one post instead of spread it all out like that, it makes it easier for us to understand.

Well, until around the same time I ran the updater and got the new client, I was able to connect to the server, if I properly recall, so I don\'t *think* I\'m blocked by a firewall or router, but...it just occured to me that every time a program changes I have to tell my firewall to allow it again...thanks...XD  I\'ll try it out.

EDIT: To test it quick, I flat-out disabled my firewall and it still won\'t even ping fragnetics.  Any other suggestions?  I\'m working on downloading the full client manually again...5 hours til that\'s done though, and no guarantees it\'ll work if I\'m having problems now.  **Shrugs** But unless someone\'s got some bright ideas, looks like that\'s the plan.

Update:  Okay, here\'s what\'s up.  My new ISP has got me behind a router and didn\'t tell me about it.  I\'ll call \'em today and get it straightened out. xD  Good to know it\'s not a prob. with PS itself.

Okay...
As it turns out, while my isp was routing me all funky, that wasn\'t creating the problem.  I\'m thinking of one last ditch thing that miiight work.  I added an exception in the windows firewall for PS already, but does anyone know which port(s) PS uses?  If may work if I add an exception specifically to that port. :)  Worth a shot.

I can\'t get at the server though just a minute ago I checked and 60 people were online.  I manually updated via the updater patch David link to, so I don\'t *think* it\'s a client-side error.  I\'ve also pinged fragnetics with the updater and gotten no response, and I can\'t connect to the server to download the update registry.  Is there some something I\'m missing? ;)  Or is the server simply down?

EDIT: Okay, after consulting that thingy Karyuu wrote, I can see that the server reports are up and live.  But that leaves me wondering if there\'s something wrong with my client, and since wait makes waist, I\'m gonna start downloading it from scratch unless someone knows what\'s wrong.  :P

EDIT AGAIN:  Okay, so despite the fact that it\'s giving live reports, the thing from one of the old-style pages that gives a straight yes or no answer as to whether the server is on or off says it\'s off, so whew not a technical error on my part. >.<

Triple edit:  Needing reassurance, since I see recent posts in which other people have used the updater/etc while I haven\'t been able to; is the server up or down? x.X

1) Yes
2) Yes

Since I own nothing (poor college student) except a PC and a few games, it\'s quite easy.

My dad had sauce he made out of jalepenio (sp?) seeds and whole habanero peppers, had this complex fermentation process...Lemme put it this way...I could eat whole habanero np, but that stuff made me *cry*...That being said, I agree with Xordan, spicy just for hot sucks, I prefer perfect amounts for flavour.

Ahh, oh so long ago, I searched for \'Free 3d mmorpg\' on google...There were like 2 or 3 projects whose description were EXACTLY the same, identical to planeshift\'s, and the first one i looked at was totally bogus so i just assumed they all were.  Then another day I did the same search and noticed the site now had a different description, and here I am today. ;)

EDIT: Whoop, didn\'t notice the \'since october\' bit.

Typhorean will want to have a nice cozy little home with a fireplace and somewhere to display his axes.  All of it could be small except the library, which would have to be huge since he\'s a book worm, to a degree.

Eldraneth would prefer a few wagons over a \'traditional\' home -- wagons are mobile.  He\'ll also be constantly experimenting with magics to create and link to new universes...in an effort to have a mansion he can keep in the trunk of his caravan. ;)

Pestilence, you aren\'t alone in thinking the development team can and should support RP, you\'re just alone in thinking they\'re doing a bad job.  They have a HUGE task before them, and if you ask me, they\'re doing pretty damn good.  But things take time, that\'s the way it works.  So...Start RPing.  Yeah, it\'d be easier to net people in with GM or dev support.  But right now they\'re just barely getting the foundations laid, forget the furniture.  No point in a warm bed without a roof over your head.  So how about we shift this topic to actually making some RP happen with what we\'ve got rather than chew each other out?  Cease-fire? ;)

EDIT/Note without bumping the thread:  I use the term \'chewing someone out\' liberally in this instance. ;)  It\'s just what needed to be said to get the idea across.

You don\'t have to be a gm or a storywriter to contribute to the roleplay environment of the game, you just have to roleplay.  Hell, go in the middle of town and make a scene about losing your favorite mug, and oh could somebody pleaaaase help! if need be...Except pick something else, I\'m gonna do that. >.>  Anyway, I didn\'t mean to come off so...strongly...but I was getting annoyed with the serious negativity of your post.  It still sounds like it\'s coming down to you wanting other people to make the game more RPish for you rather than doing it yourself.

Okay, pardon me for being blunt, and I know I\'m not forced to read this or anything, but...man.  It was never stated that game mechanics didn\'t help RP, but rather that RP can exist without said game mechanics, and that the devs were doing what they could with mechanics.

Karyuu is trying to figure out what it is you want, being more patient than I certainly would be in her shoes, and you are arguing, arguing, arguing, without ever once stating what you want other than more back story.  Which has nothing to do with the lack of good game mechanics you were originally arguing against, and it has already been stated: the game mechanics aren\'t far enough along to implement what backstory there already was in game; however, it is being worked on.  The crafting system is near completion in this last update, according to the main page, which will hopefully make the economy less of a jumble...just as an example.  I\'d suggest you quick ranting and raving about how horrible it all is, and, if you really want some good backstory and RP, ask the question \'What does Talad want done as far as backstory and such, then?\' instead of saying \'The GMs don\'t make enough events and the dev\'s game mechanics ruin RP\'.  Quit complaining and start doing.  Once you do something, I will have a lot more respect for your...suggestions and so, I\'m sure, will the dev team and the GMs and everyone whose attention you\'re trying to grab.

I believe the general argument was something along the lines of: IF they are really going to RP, then they will do it out of their own initiative, rather than simply for some reward.  Otherwise, \'RPing\' turns into powergaming where people are scrambling to get fancy special rewards, and the line between RP events and events made up just to get something special is blurred.  Of course, the NPC moving thing and similar features...I believe Karyuu stated that the number of GMs with that ability *is* growing, and it will happen more in the future, but planeshift -- all of it, the development and gm community, the game itself, and the storyline -- is a changing and growing thing, right now still in pretty early stages.  So be patient.  If you really want to help, go out and do some significant RP.  On your own, without GM-controlled NPCs or fancy item spwns or whatever.  And with that, I am going to bed.  Have a nice night, Pestilence, Karyuu, and other person who posted whose name I can\'t recall.

Furthermore, if you are convinced that we don\'t need a complete game to roleplay, why are you so insistent on specialincentive and technical back up for RP?  All that would do is cause players who weren\'t getting those incentives for \'honest rp\' or such like to try to manipulate their way into getting them, or just complaining about life (err, planeshift) being unfair.  Just...let that sink in.

HAL does not have self awareness, it\'s just an adaptive language parsing engine!

And...Wow.  3 hours already?  Oh well...Pestilence, you STILL have to wait for the rest of us, because the server STILL isn\'t up, for whatever reason -- Hah!  >.<

That being said, would it be safe to assume that by this time tomorrow it\'d be available on the site and via the updater, or should I stop being so antsy?  Or perhaps both...
