A few minor things
« on: November 27, 2005, 11:52:46 am »
I\'m not sure if these have been suggested before, they probably have but with my limited abilities to wield the search function I can\'t find anything so here goes ...

First regarding the shortcut buttons, it would be handy if they could be personalized for each character instead of having them the same with all characters. Right now I have some very different characters: a fighter, a miner, a mage and they all have different skills, thus different shortcuts. It would be useful if I could have their most used buttons first in the list for each one.

Then another little change ... a button or command to destroy an item. Right now when I\'m hunting or collecting things and I can\'t carry anymore I sometimes want to remove some things so I can carry more of another thing. The only choice I have now is either eat it or when I can\'t ... drop it. I don\'t really like to drop things everywhere since it is polluting the map and it can cause lag so a command to get rid of an item would be useful.

Lastly if I make macros I usually like to put some kind of text in, normally a /me command but I\'ve noticed that sometimes it gets irritating and comes over as spam when I need to click that button several times and that same line of text appears every time. I was wondering if it could be possible to make a command with several \'phrases\' who are then generated at random.
For example if I have a \"sheathe weapons\" shortcut. What it does is moving my equiped weapons back to my inventory. I could combine it with several phrases: \'/me sheathes his weapons\' or \'/me puts his gear away\' or (nothing) ... one of those is produced at random.

I hope everything is clear ...

1)  Yes, I could do that rather simply.  I did a similar thing with the quest notes file.  Though, eventually the GUI will become more useful, and the shortcuts won\'t be as needed.  (aka, we\'ll have nifty little quick-bars and whatnot, which themselves would be character specific)

2)  Destroying items is already on my idea list.  I was thinking of simply being able to drop an item and whack it a few times.  I might actually get around to coding it at some point.

3)  Well, the other solution is to just not put text in macros...  I find those shortcut phrases annoying, personally.

Obviously. The main reason I do it is because it is one of the few things that clearly marks that I\'m in the mood for roleplaying and not just slashing monsters. Most roleplayers tend to use some text to paint an image of their actions ... and in the heat of battle it is hard to type out these texts without dying before you\'re done typing. But I agree, the repetetiveness can quickly become annoying ... hence my idea.

P.S.: I like the idea of hitting items to destroy them, or stomping on them with your feet ... course the latter might not always be a good idea. *imagines a barefooted dwarf stomping on a dagger, lying with its point up, to destroy it*

Auchh, I\'m a dwarf. Mostly I use a Kran\'s head (named Reor) to destroy things...
And I mean that the Kran\'s name is Reor, not only his head...

For destroying items: trash can containers. Drop an item in and at the end of every Planeshift day (or every two Planeshift days, etc), it\'s gone. Put a few of these along the road at key points and tons of them in Hydlaa and Akkaio/Ojaveda. For a lot of items, you could whack them for days and barely make a dent (a sword or dagger for example). A trash can is a more realistic disposal method. It also allows for the beggars of the city to go dumpster-diving for stuff. :D

Peraonaly, I would like what many muds do, have scavanger monsters, and janiter NPCs to clean up items left behind. Thusly you might kill a clacker and find tria it found on the ground, or you might have a quest of returning an item to an NPC that the janitor found.
player -> gm -> dev -> bum

Well I\'ve thought of trash cans but I don\'t think that\'d solve the problem ... unless you combine it with Stfrn\'s idea.

People will be too lazy to go to a trash can and drop their stuff there, they\'ll still drop things like waybread on the ground.
But if PS will have its own \'army\' of garbage disposers, people who run around picking up items and dropping them into the trash containers.

The scavenger idea isn\'t bad either but what about the cities and places where there are no monsters?

@Avarus: Typing descriptional things isn\'t talking :P

Trash cans can be placed anywhere there\'s a dwelling. Where there isn\'t a dwelling, people will just drop stuff. That\'s how it\'d work in reality. Most people are far too lazy and also totally incapable of destroying most of the things they don\'t want (note: breaking != destroying).
