Where do the devs plan on taking magic?
« on: March 15, 2006, 03:02:34 pm »
Flame burst and arrow were about even in terms of damage over time, but arrow had the advantage of range.  Now there\'s meteor, which is basically the red equivalent of the \"other\" arrow spell.  Longer range but not as long as the arrow spell, and a bit more damage than flame burst - probably similar damage over time as the \"other\" arrow spell.

But it still doesn\'t seem ballanced.  The arrow spells fire very quickly, so you can get to that critical amount of damage sooner, and you get more of an opportunity to walk around inbettween shots.  Also, meteor requires a higher skill level than the \"other\" arrow spell.  So crystal way beats red way for offensive/combat spells, but isn\'t red way supposed to specialize in combat spells?  It seems unballanced to me.

Is the ballance going to be changed with new spells, or are the old ones going to be modified?

Which explains why there\'s been so many new glyphs lately.:)  I think they just love the magic bunches... why shouldn\'t they?

Those glyphs have been around for a while, just not public.  We\'re going to rebalance all the magic at some point, not sure when.  It\'s horribly under-powered, at the moment.

Usually when a dev wants to shut me up, they just mute me. :)

In terms of fighting NPCs, yes.

In terms of duels, it gets more complicated.

In duels, people tend to run around a lot to cheat the other person out of an attack.  It\'s an exploit of the game mechanics which the Game Masters have accepted as the nature of the beast.  However, the crystal way spells will hit no matter what, and in combination with running around a lot the crystal way spells can be pretty leathal.

Because red way spells take so long to cast, they aren\'t really viable in duels.

Really - a meteor hitting someone?  And they can take three more hits before they die?  No.  A meteor should inflict maybe 200 damage to a player who isn\'t wearing layers and layers of armour, so everyone will die except for the very strongest of players -- and even they will be right on the brink of death.

If a meteor fell on you that was half the size the meteor that the glyph creates, it would still kill a person with light armor.  This meteor should crush just about anything in one hit except maybe a tefusang and ulber.  Even trepors should be squashed by them.
There are two types of people in this world: The Pinky and the Brain.
Which one are you?

Well if they raised the damage of a meteor to outragoues amounts then someone would make a new post talking about how overpowering and unbalanced the meteor is. They basicly have to set a damage amount and hope it works decently. I mean come on if I stab you with a sword whats the chances that I will have to do it ten more times before you die. Not likely. Point is they will never be able to make it truely realistic. There is just no way.
