Description saving
« on: March 12, 2009, 05:18:10 pm »
How about the ability to save someone's description to a text file like you can do with books? A lot of the time I want to be able to describe someone ICly but I may not have had enough time to read the description, I might have accidentally closed the description window right before the person walked away, or I just may not remember the details because of trying to describe the look of the character days later (after RL has had the chance to crowd out the memory.)

I think it would be helpful to RP to have the option to save the description so you can review it later, and if the person changes their description then it is up to the other player to resave it if they care to have the updated description. I think it could go in a folder where the logs folder is and it would store all the saved descriptions.

And might I add that this seems like a good idea too: http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=25459.msg282174#msg282174

my 2 tria...

If the description has details I would see normally, but more information than is currently implemented, then i vote YES*

*I find that a lot of the descrptions are walking sandwich boards with life stories on them.  Once I get to the first bit of info I would not be able to "SEE" then I stop reading.

Regarding the linked thread, I think discussing your armor can be easily done.  Um, people can see which armor you have on.  so, the fact I am wearing a clacker claw on a red twine necklace, sure, but WHY I am wearing it... nope.

Under that criteria, I have not found much need to remember all the details of people I run into.  Especially since I find people tend to live at one extreme or the other, either no descriptions, or a novella.

BTW, last I checked, the only books you could save as a text file anymore are the ones you authored.  I also used to have a couple books saved for notes, about people (npcs mainly) and quests, that Bamko could refer to whenever he needed to.

in the next release you will be able to SAVE your OWN description and load it back in, like you can do for books, you CAN NOT do this for others. If you allow it to be done with others descriptions you will get to the point that you may see people stealing others descriptions for their own use.

Bamko: Yeah, but say someone is attacked by another player. That red twine necklace with the clacker claw becomes a plot point. People can look in the descriptions of people they pass for that necklace. Not only that, usually, when you are in the middle of a good roleplay you don't necessarily have time to bring up the book window to write notes as stuff is often happening around you and it helps to be able to see where everybody in the area is when that stuff happens.  :D But if you can push a button and save the description for later then that would be helpful.

Caarrie: I can see that reasoning for player books, but what could you do with someone else's description? If a person is intent on doing something wrong with someone's description, more than likely they will not have a problem stopping what they are doing and just copying(typing) the description out. And if it's just a matter of plagiarism, they can do that anyway.  ???

you say "yeah, but.." but I agreed with the idea for stuff that could be seen(should be seen, would be seen..., like the necklace).  Kind of confused me.  I agree 100% but if and only if they start enforcing RP on fragnetics to include getting rid of the novellas with the life stories.  Otherwise the books will just be getting longer, IMO.

Ok bamko, I misunderstood what you wrote about the necklace. About the descriptions it's already something you can petition about I believe. There are guidelines about what is and isn't allowed in descriptions. The GMs can't go around policing descriptions since there aren't many of them and they have so much to do so just send them a petition. I personally haven't seen many like that or maybe the novellas have gotten shorter from what I remember seeing in the past.  ;D

One time I read a 20 page long description.  The dude was a 20 foot tall dragon, standing in the Kada-El tavern.
Censorship FTW.
