Ready but not for all
« Reply #46 on: November 21, 2005, 10:44:39 am »
What is going or should i say going down ...
We have an update , who can only be accessed to insider.
Maybe the window release is working but what with linux and mac ?
No update on  official PS homepage are  made for these release . All have to be found in a messy forum.
Simple bug like smallinventory.xml are still in repository and are not changed , and makes a nonsens of using the updater.

And update should make things better but not worser.

What is the goal of PS ? Just using  player as betatester for an unknown goal ?

PS as open-source , i dont believe it anymore after ready so much in forum and bug report, because only a handfull of poeple can make any change and these change are no done even with all help of lot of player, or take so long until a hypothetic better update. The showcase of PS is nice , but this is only an empty box full of promise since 3 years.

Wanting to protect to much a projet is also to making it not going further or killing it.

Think about it.

I didn\'t realize till I tried to fix a small bug in the updater how many features are not quite complete in it. Currently it cannot selfupdate on any platform besides windows, even though it is easier on linux. That should be fixed as soon as we can.

The mac and linux versions were not properly released as a new package for 12, yes that was a mistake. But it takes hours to make each package, where as updating from an older version should work. Howver, it, like most of the features of planeshift at the tech-demo stage, is not quite smooth yet.

The small inventory error is ironically because the linux update is newer then the windows one, so it needs a newer datafile. That also should not have happened, but we cannot reverse past mistakes, just avoid them in the future.

It is true that only a small group can commit changes to planeshift. However, we are more then happy to look at proposed changes from others. I have committed fixes from atleast three players, and I would be more then happy to commit more. Just pm me or email.
player -> gm -> dev -> bum

If anyone could freely save changes to the CVS, it\'d be a mess...  Open source means you can do whatever you want to the source; it says nothing about what you can do to our copy of it.  ;)

Ditto on the committing of others\' code.  If you fix a bug, we are more than happy to review and commit it for you!  Poke one of us on IRC if you have some code, or would like to be given something to take a look at.  New coders are always welcome.  :)
