just don't get caught ;)

Kinda hard when players can see your name.  Even if their characters "don't know" who you are, next time the player sees your name he/she is going to remember you.  It would be cool if there was an in game item like a bandit mask that hides your name from other players (but not your description).  That way if they want to identify you later they will have to compare your descriptions, not just remember your name.  Of course people could abuse this by deleting their descriptions whenever they commit a crime... The idea needs work...

Interested in getting in on some baddie rp?
Maybe, maybe not.  What's it to you?   ;)

smote    past tense of smite (Verb)

Verb:

   1. Strike with a firm blow.
   2. Defeat or conquer (a people or land).

Laanx is a god in planeshift.. Blackflame is another... sort of horribly evil terrorist sort of god. Hence, Laanx smote this poor confused blackflame worshiping soul xD

@ tman:

Unfortunately, the engine does not yet support visible cloaking by altering the model e.g. with a worn hood or mask. A Mercenary Helm may be the best available facial cloak so far.

Hoods and masks may be implemented "more or less soon™" ... but until then, "look at" the characters and read their descriptions to check if they are wearing a piece of clothing which hides their face.

Tip: Use a shortcut with the command "/targetinfo", this works over a longer distance than the right-click context menu.

Tman,

This is where the separation of  IN CHARACTER and OUT OF CHARACTER information comes into play.

Your character DOES NOT see the letters that float above another character's head. That information needs to be ignored by the player. If you want to get into this sort of role play, I would strongly suggested having regular discussions with experienced role players both on the forum and in game. If you can join a reputable role playing guild, then even better.

I won't say which guilds are good or bad, that's unfair and biased, but I'll say if you get involved in discussions about role playing here on the forum, then you will come in contact with some very solid players and receive good advice.

I know that the character won't know my name.  But the player will see it.  I don't want the player seeing my name, then using that as an excuse to say that their character recognizes me.  I guess I just have to trust that people wouldn't do this.

Exactly,

You need to be able to trust that the other player knows how to keep ic and ooc separate.

You need to play with good players for this reason.

Many folks who follow the forums know that Rigwyn is a bad guy - and that's putting it mildly. But when they play, they ignore that ooc info and only let their characters act on what they know.

They may know as a player, that they are about to get robbed or screwed, but they do not let their characters react that way.

This is not easy to do and takes practice.

Likewise, if I see I'm surrounded by unfamiliar characters with "Adani Order" guild tags, I have to ignore that info and be vulnerable even though I know I'm in for a hell of a beating. xD

There is a lot to learn about good role playing.. That's why I say to get connected with many good role players as you can.

RP can be a hell of a lot of fun once you get the ground rules figured out!

To some extent it is not possible. I have made it a practice from early days never to introduce myself correctly. There may be some times when I have but for the most part if someone asks me who I am I say "you can call me bud." Few people actually call me that but some do and NPCs always call me by name if they use a name of any kind rather than a description. e.g. 'good kran' or 'gemma.'

of course it doesn't help that I prattle on in gossip and bilbous is always attached to my comments.

If you introduce yourself as someone else, or someone introduces themselves as something other than their name, like say my name was [Rebecca] and i said [Becky] or [Call me Sam], your character wouldn't be able to add them to their friend list? or does that even matter?

Very simple. Your CHARCTER only knows what they hear via IC means. You character does not see any text that is marked as OOC --- such as text in [square brackets] ((double brackets)) {{curly or whatever}}

You have to ignore all OOC information. Your character does not know everything that YOU  the PLAYER knows.

You are not your character.

Hope that helps....

A little trick that I learned about recently is that you can edit the names on your buddy list. So say your character's name is Bobby, but you introduce yourself as Karl. I can add you to my buddy list (Bobby will show up), then click on the name in the buddy list and click "Edit" then change it to "Karl" or Bobby(Karl) as a reminder.

Well Yeah, I sort of had that idea down.
So, if you pass the character again who gave an alias, your char would know them by their alias, but... You the player, should probably not add them to your friend list, [i tend to do that to know who i could most likely run into]

I used to add people to my friend list ONLY if I knew their name ICly.. I did this just a help me remember. It gets harder when you play several characters.

I added an extra line to my last post describing a trick that I recently learned for editing the buddy list .... hope that helps.

I know some folks keep notes for each character in a file or on paper... whatever works...

You can edit buddy list entries. Bilbous appears as Bud in my buddies' list for example. If I double clicked Bud in the buddies list and sent a tell to him it would go to Bilbous. There is another in my buddies' list which is also known by the alias Shadow.

Like Rigwyn, my buddies' list reflects all characters which have introduced themselves to my character.

I never use buddy lists unless I am looking out for someone who is very irregularly on-line such as now. I will probably remove Ribenoly soon and have an empty list again. That person may never be back and I knew I might never get back what I lent out.

I figure that if the npcs all know me by name most anyone else can be assumed to have asked them about me too.
