So Im Just Curious,
« on: January 26, 2012, 09:51:43 pm »
I've been noticing talk about 'permanent death' [or so]. Sense I started playing again. I think it was there before, But I just didn't really pay that much attention, I wasn't to curious about most stuff in the game.
So is it really possible for a character to just permanently, Die? Or is this more of an RP type of thing when, it seems appropriate... Hmm...

No matter how long I have been around, I well Always be a nub.

For the most part it is just good RP, obviously when a few other players are connected with the event.  There are however times when a GM might deem it necessary to "end" a character for certain reasons, but that is a whole other issue.  Be sure to read game policies and such, should you have any questions about this. Or you can ask other players in /tell.

Thank you,
There is so much stuff to read about this game, Its Hard for me to remember it all. But I may have passively read answers to most of my questions. I should just pay more attention.

The "permanent death" of a character means its deletion from the database only. That should not be caused by any mechanics related action in game (no quest, no combat).

To give you a better answer, there are two types of death in Planeshift, "Common death" , and "True Death" aka Permadeath.

With common death, the character fades from view and reappears in the death realm - fully alive and healed/restored.

With true death, the body remains and needs to be hauled off to a burial well ( such as the howling well  on bdroad1 ) for proper disposal. They do not return.

This is a concept that applies to both role play and the game settings. True death can be cause via various poisons, annihilation of the body, or when smote by a god. Its generally up to the player to decide if he wants true death. There was one case that I know of where a player was forcible permakilled by Laanx due to consequences of his role play. There was another a where a character (Donari) was permakilled after an in-character trial due to rp consequences.

Thanks that is a wealth of knowledge. But It brought up the question of who drags of the body to the Burials Wells? I always sorta wonder, when I come past that subject.

I think this bit about the burial wells is on the website (planeshift.it) but I don't recall that particular detail. According to what was written there, people view the corpse as just an empty shell. Its no big deal.. just another dead body...

What is tricky at first is learning to view things as a character from Yliakum would view them, as opposed to viewing them as someone from our world would view them.

Aside from the website, the library in Hydlaa, DR and other places are useful for learning about the settings ( but useless in terms of finding directly usable information as you typically expect in a single player rpg )

Related question, I think I read somewhere that permadeath can be the sentence for things like violent crime.  If I RP an assassination or armed robbery is there a chance my character will be deleted?

(basically can permadeath be forced upon me or do I have to consent to it?)

Because I'm not going to do anything evil with a character I've spent a lot of time on if it might get permakilled.

NO

The case where a player was FORCIBLY smote by Laanx was because his character was wandering around the plaza /shouting that she was a Blackflame follower.

ZAP!

I think you will find that as long as you are not harassing people you will be fine. If you persist in trying to force your intentions on players who are clearly unwilling to play along you will likely get a warning from a gm which if ignore will lead to a temporary ban of your account in the game. Permanent death is not something implemented into the game and cannot happen without either GM punishment or your own action. Of course if you accidentally delete a character it will for all intents and purposes be permanently dead, too. If you leave Planeshift and never return that will have a similar effect for other players but you won't care. :)

Not to digress, but many of us DO play criminal characters - some quite violent too... so there IS room for badness....

...

Interested in getting in on some baddie rp?

smote    past tense of smite (Verb)

Verb:

   1. Strike with a firm blow.
   2. Defeat or conquer (a people or land).

Laanx is a god in planeshift.. Blackflame is another... sort of horribly evil terrorist sort of god. Hence, Laanx smote this poor confused blackflame worshiping soul xD

( Picture a bolt of lightning tearing from the sky and turning someone into a pile of ash! )

The Blackflame religion is a very sensible topic, participating is only recommended to experienced roleplayers. Briefly, nobody shall know that this underground cult even exists. Please read more details in Some BlackFlame guidelines from the Settings Team.
