How it works

After the apparent success of the First Starphire Tourney, the organisators of the event have come up with a more fair, less cumbersome way of playing it out. While it's still a game of luck, this time you'll have more personalization choices, and the dice rolls won't be carried out in the game, but through a Google Docs spreadsheet. The rules are as follow:

  • There are 3 classes: large, medium, and small. I've divided them by race, but if you indicate that your character is bigger/smaller than average, you'll be moved to the adequate class. For convenience, if you don't indicate otherwise, you'll be classed depending on your race. This is to do away with the apparent misbalance between races.
  • All contestants must be able to wear plate armor: like in the previous event, the armor will either be a mix of chain or plate, or full plate, with the correspondent modifiers. These have a weight value to take into account.
  • There are three kinds of shields and lances, all with different modifiers and weight values to keep in mind.
  • All contestants can only wear up to 70lb of equipment, regardless of their inherent strength. This is for fairness' sake.

The base system used for the dice rolls and blocks has been taken from the D&manual, modified slightly. It is well balanced as it is already. The mechanism is as follows:

  • Every class has an Armor Class, consisting on a number, plus an armor and shield bonus, and strength, dexterity and size modifiers. The participants will then choose their equipment: armor, shield, and lances.
  • Attack rolls are based off a 1d20, plus a base attack bonus (class inherent), and strength and size modifiers. This number must be higher than the opponent's armor class to land a hit.
  • Damage will be dealt according to the lance chosen.
  • The participant with the most damage taken at the end of a round (three runs per round) will lose.

Mock match

Sir Gallahad, from Hydlaa Oldtown. A tower of an Ylian, packed with muscle, he can use a claymore in one hand and still cover himself with a shield. He's competing for the money, to pay for his mother's treatment for a severe case of pox. He's a large class, using full plate, a reinforced lance, and a light shield.
His AC would be 10(base number)+4(armor bonus)+1(shield bonus)+0+1(dexterity modifier)-1(size penalty)=16
His attack dice would be 1d20+2(base attack bonus)+1(strength modifier)-1(size penalty) -> 1d20+2; and his damage dice would be 1d10.

Brodr Quartzsmit is a Stonehammer from Gugrontid, stocky as a dwarf can be, making him a medium class. He seeks recognition so that he can join The Way of The Hammer and present the Cup to the guild. He's chosen to wear mixed plate, a heavy shield, and a medium lance.
His AC would be 10(base number)+2(armor bonus)+3(shield bonus)+1+0(dexterity modifier)+0(size penalty)=17
His attack dice would be 1d20+1(base attack bonus)+1(strength modifier)+0(size penalty) -> 1d20+2; and his damage dice would be 1d8.

>In the first run, Gallahad rolls a 14+2=16, and Quartzsmith a 16+2=18, which means he lands a strike, since his roll is higher. He rolls a 1d8 and gets a 4, dealing 4 damage points to Gallahad.
>On the second run, Gallahad rolls a 10+2=12, and Quartzsmith a 1+2=3, which is an automatic loss. Gallahad rolls a 1d10, and deals 8 damage points to Quartzsmith.
>For the last run, Gallahad rolls a 7+2=9, and Quartzsmith a 19+2=21, which is over 20, which is a win. He rolls a 1d8 and deals 4 damage to Gallahad.
Since both participants are tied, they run again one last time.
>To break the tie, Gallahad rolls a 18+2=20, which is a win, but Quartzsmith rolls a 20+2=20, which is a natural 20, thus better than Gallahad's. He rolls a 1d8, dealing 5 points to Gallahad.

Gallahad, sore from the beating, retires quickly to go take care of his dear mother. A passerby, however, caught wind of his story, and hands him a bag of circles with a kind smile and a blessing. The Ylian will never forget this gesture.
Brodr Quartzsmith is too busy celebrating his win and promotion to the next round with his brethren, drinking and shouting merrily. But in the back, a Nolthrir in gilded armor and a golden cape is making sure his lance is on point...

As you saw, it looks quite balanced and fair, and not too dependant on the character's race. Note that a natural 1 is an automatic fail, regardless of the modifier, and a natural 20 is an automatic win.

Rumors run rampart in Hydlaa. It's being talked that Lord Jocas DeFaye, current Champion of the Starphire, is coming back to Amdeneir, and challenging the jousters of the Dome to try and win the Starphire Cup from his hands...

Equipment - Can't be heavier than 70lb!
  • Armor: Mixed (30lb)

[Large category should be allowed to hold more than 70lb, a kran and a lemur, should not have the same cap... just my two cents]

It's a matter of fairness. They are able to carry more than 70lb, but for the sake of equalizing and balancing, the rules state the equipment can't weigh more than that. It's not a matter of being able, but of being allowed.

Can you make Jomed cry when he tastes your food?
Yes, but it's more because of how I mangle his recipes. ;D

Maybe if I can find the time I'll get Meavay to bring in some of her baked goods. Just maybe.
Buy some goods, sell some bads, at the Weekly Hydlaa Market!

[EVENT] The Second Starphire Fair!
This is a shameless copy-paste of the original thread, but hey, still applies!

The Starphire Fair!
(It even rhymes!)

A tourney isn't any good if there aren't places where merchants can sell their wares! And not only that, but also food! And wine! And mead! Everything good in this world!

So, we're currently looking for:
 - A smith shop to sell their weapons, as well as lend the gear for the jousters
 - A healer's tent, because there will be blood (most likely)
 - Herbal remedies (for the healer's tent)
 - Various stalls selling food!
 - Also stalls selling drinks!!
 - And some stalls selling diverse things: mementos, clothes, books, guild stalls to recruit people...

The goal is the following: have a festival like Ierefal, spanning over 2 days (hopefully, but it depends on the number of jousters to attend the tourney), where everyone can drink, eat, and be merry!

I'll also be posting a schedule of the festivities soon enough, probably to bump this thread shamelessly again, heh.

The Starphire Tourney
Side contests

Caber toss!
Measure your strength and bruteness against other burly contestants! We've found the tallest, heaviest log we've found lying around, made it look somehow decent, and made sure it was heavier than holding a goujah in your arms!

Again, this is another dice-powered contest, since some roleplayers would end up flinging the log into the Azure Sun if left unattended... Here's the thing:

  • All races get their starting strength as indicated by the table from the first post
  • Depending on your occupation, you'll be assigned (or not) extra points
  • The occupations that will give bonus strength (+20) are: blacksmiths, miners, goujah handlers... basically anything that involves a great deal of strength, even if you're a sellsword or a fighter by trade
  • The activities that don't give a bonus are: jewelry, fishing, herbalism... basically anything that involves brains over brawn
  • If your character is considered to be extra dainty by the judges, you may get your strength cut by some points (-10). Scholars, I'm looking at you lot!
  • The judges' verdict can't be revoked

And here's the mechanics:
> The character will try to lift the log. For this, they must roll their strength three times (/roll 3 STR). If the result is higher than the base strength, they're able to lift the log.
> Next is checking that they're able to keep their balance. Roll their dexterity three times again (/roll 3 DEX), and proceed as said before.
> The next is how far do you manage to throw it.
     - The maximum distance is 40 [units] (meter, yard... whatever, I don't know what do we use in this game)
     - If your strength is between 50-100, multiply 1d20 for 1. For 101-150, multiply for 1.5. For 151-200, multiply for 2

== Practical example ==
> Foo, Kran, herbalist: STR=110, DEX=40, no bonus
> Bar, Demorian, smith: STR=60(80), DEX=90, +20 STR
> Norf, Stonehammer, scholar: STR=90(80), DEX=60, -10 STR

=Lifting the log=
> Foo rolls: 197 - can lift the log
> Bar rolls: 94 - can lift the log
> Norf rolls: 194 - can lift the log

=Balancing the log=
> Foo rolls: 86 - holds the log steady
> Bar rolls: 173 - holds the log steady
> Norf rolls: 58 - drops the log (probably crushing his toes) and is disqualified

=Throwing the log=
> Foo rolls: 4 x1.5 = 6u - Foo loses by 1u
> Bar rolls: 7 x1 = 7u - Bar wins the contest

Porg Dressing!
Are you an artist in the kitchen? Do you think food is eaten with your eyes first? Show us your prowess in the porg dressing contest! It's very simple: you'll be given a whole porg, and you will have to roast and dress it at your heart's desire! The judges will then evaluate presence (how well-looking is your porg), originality (if your idea is groundbreaking), and last but not least taste (if it tastes like goujah fur you probably won't win. Probably).

The cooks must submit a book (placed in front of the dressed porg) with an IC description of how it looks and how it has been cooked. The judges will read the books, discuss them, and give a verdict. Any poisoning attempts will get you disqualified, and probably jailed too!
Also there are rumors that the GMs will spawn actual porgs for you to dress! So bring your apples, carrots, leaves, everything!

There might be more contests to come, if I can think of them! Otherwise, these will have to do.

I hope a lot of people decide to join in before the date, so I can start setting things up!

Since nobody showed much interest save for one or two players, I'm calling it off. Yes, on the day of the event. I don't know if I'll just push it back or just cancel it altogether.
