Abnormal readings for loading world
« on: July 27, 2003, 07:01:34 am »
Time of test: 12:52 AM (July 27th, 2003)
OS: Windows XP Home
Processor: P4 - 2.4GHZ
RAM: 1.2 GB SDRAM
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9100
Video Card Memory: 128 MB
PS Client Version: Mollecular Blue (updated)
OpenGL or Safe Mode: OpenGL
Description of the bug:

This is quite a long description.  The things stops and freezes up at the loading world screen (ok, so it did that on my other computer) but now here\'s the weird part.  When I check out how much RAM it uses, it continually climbs up, it reached 500MB RAM when I stopped it from loading.  The first frame of the overworld appeared, but nothing worked after that.  The client didn\'t crash, it just froze up.
Here\'s the wierdest part:  I tried reinstalling the game today.  Since I didn\'t like the speed I had a year ago.  Now the game doesn\'t even want to load on a computer that\'s 5X faster!

Now yes, I\'ve made it so that the preferences makes it work in 16BPP and textures, I make it work with Win98/WinME, I can connect.  I was waiting for an hour and it still didn\'t load! (I went to get a cup of coffee)

I\'ve updated my Vcard drivers, I\'ve updated my BIOS, I\'ve updated my WinXP with all of the nessessairy and reccomended updates, I\'ve checked all of the FAQs here.

Now here\'s the big knocker.  I was able to load the game on a P Celeron 333MHZ, 58MB RAM, NO Vcard (it\'s an integrated chip) and I had 30 fps.  This completely boggled my mind, since it only took 15 minutes for the world to start with that computer, after a fresh installation.

Please help!

I\'ve heard chatter of problems like this with the Radeon cards.  That\'s all I know.  :(

Aww...  Maybe I could troubleshoot it by downloading the newest V Card drivers?  I haven\'t done that for about 4 months...

For whatever reason, I\'ve never been able to fix problems by getting new drivers.  Getting old drivers however...

Strange, I got new drivers, I tweaked my settings (they\'re in 32BPP) and I restarted my computer, now everything works, asides from the godawful lag I\'m getting.

I seem to be having the same problem.  I believe pretty much everyone (with the exception of a lucky few) experiences the rising amount of RAM usage...  It\'s just something that you\'ll have to either ignore during this stage of development until its fixed, or you can go ahead and try to fix it yourself ;) (If you succeed, let us all know of course :P).  You can do what I do though, if it lets you in game you just talk to everyone that\'s on using /shout, and you surf the forums daily in search of someone posting a new fix for the lag ;)

Well, the next build will rely more on your graphics-card than on your RAM, allowing PS to run more smoothly, for most people.
Browsing the forums when I\'m bored, nothing more.

That will prove to be a great asset for the next build.  The rising RAM is quite a problem for me, it rises by one MB every 5 seconds, making me max out after about a few minutes.

There\'s something I\'ve noticed too, when you hit lag, the RAM rises dramatically, then keeps rising.  When you get out of it, the RAM usage drops back to around 300MB.  This would be something to watch out for since lag in any other game isn\'t supposed to do that to RAM, or VCard usage.
