Everyone gets that message, it shouldn\'t be the cause of your game not loading. It sounds like you\'ve tried a fair few things to get it running... hmm, are you sure nothing is corrupt?

Maybe you should try downloading the pre-compiled install file from http://planeshift.fragnetics.com (I can never remember the URL to the file... maybe someone can post it below for riratm, please? :)). Uninstall the game and then use this pre-compiled installer to install it again.

\'Fraid that\'s all I can think of. o.o

Well, the universal remedy in PS is \"wait\". It can take literally hours to get into the game, often regardless of CPU speed. So you might just need to wait, because after the black window (it\'s a DOS window) disappears, the title screen will eventually come up.
However, your graphics hardware seems to be pretty low on memory, so you might try the settings in \"pssetup\". Set everything to minimum and see if it starts. Try software mode for rendering as well, maybe your graphics drivers or AGP subsystem drivers are buggy and need to be updated first. also run the \"updeter\" program once.

The preassembled PS MB download is here:
http://www.fragnetics.com/files/PlaneShiftV0.2.010.exe

I however think you don\'t need it, because if the installer works, chances are slim for something to be corrupt. Anyway, you may try.

As for your computer: if it has always hated DOS, then I believe there is something else wrong with it. Probably something that only creeps up in some cases, like some games don\'t work, some apps mysteriously crash, stuff like that. Sounds like defective hardware, maybe the leaking capacitor problem or a lightning strike (overvoltage), or just some faulty setup (the BIOS and windoze don\'t usually do the PnP configuration properly, at least they always fail for me).

Use the psconfig in the planeshift folder and set the stuff to minimum levels. Run the updater. If it still doesn\'t work, go to the ps directory, rightclick on it and select \"properties\". It should come up with
101 MB (106,573,190 bytes)
501 files, 38 folders

If yours differs greatly, the install did indeed not work and you need to reinstall completely, probably into a different folder.

Also, make sure that you have at least 500 MB of swapspace (check the free space on the drive windoze resides on unless you changed it, in which case you\'ll know where to look). Also, I\'m not sure if there needs to be free space on the drive PS is installed on, but just in case, there should also be 500 MB of free space. If both wiondoze and PS are on the same drive, sum both up, i.e. there must be at least 1GB of free space.

Make sure that you have the most recent graphics drivers (and DirectX? Don\'t know if it is required) installed.

FYI it\'s not DOS.

That\'s a console showing the startup progress

Yes, in XP you don\'t have a real DOS anymore and the console isn\'t exactly DOS as well, but still they\'re closely related as one can see by running psclient inside a manually-opened console: it uses this to output the messages. Therefore, if the DOS (i.e. console) doesn\'t work, chances are that psclient isn\'t going to work as well.

The install seems to have run OK according to the file list, therefore there seems to be no need to reinstall ATM.
Did the updater run successfully (i.e., did it optput ~ 30 messages)? Did the psconfig program work?

Can you open a console window manually? Try running psclient from there (cd (full\\path\\to\\planeshift\\folder)), this window will not close so you can see the output. It should give four additional messages: Warning: failed to load (blah). If they are different or there are more / less, that\'s important and might give a clue on what is wrong, otherwise I\'m out of ideas ATM.
