Yliakum History... Laanx
« on: August 22, 2004, 07:22:49 pm »
I don\'t know about you but the part where Laanx  is refered to as a \"he\" annoys the hell out of me..  Has she undergone a sexchange operation somewhere during the third epoch or what? - Or was the deformation so comprehensive that it changed her sex?

- I know it\'s prolly a typo but it\'s annoying still

Laanx no longer has a sex, as I understand it. In the english language, \"he\" is the default.

\"Mindless of Talad\'s pain in causing her harm, she denied her being, her femininity, her people, and drove away the harmony from her heart.\"

Emphasis added by me. Laanx rejected the female form and essentially turned male.

Edit: Perhaps that too, Joey. Laanx later spoke in a male voice, leading me to believe there had been a shift instead of a denying of gender altogether.

If it is a deity and it has no sex, it would be an entity, hence, \'it\'.  That\'s how I would refer to Laanx, although I always thought it was female before now...

The thing I call for is consistency...
If you read through it she turns sex more than once...
She turns to he, he turns to she and then lastly turns to he once more... It\'s just confusing.

I think that whether she denies it or not, she is inherently a female

Indeed it is confusing when changing gender. If you did that in an English school project, you\'d be told to go back and do it again ;) Consistency, as said above, is vital to make things look proffesional. I very much like the background story, and the depth of the whole thing, there are just tiny things like that :)

I have to side with Kithplana. \"It\" being a deity it is logical to assume it can take whatever form or sex it wants. But I think I can take it a bit further.

See I believe Laanx had become ashamed of it\'s female form therefore it wanted to change into a different sex, which in this case it would become a male. I honestly believe its because she feared Vodul would punish him/her, therefore it changed into a totally different form.

Another reason is for independence. Usually throughout literature when a female has long hair it represents feminility but sometimes when she wants independence the hair would be cut, representing the beginning of a new person or that she is \"clean.\"

I\'m sure when this Planeshift history was authored a lot of time was put into key things like beauty or other parts that make up a whole story.
My name is NOT pronounced, \"Kway-per,\" it\'s pronounced \"Kye-per.\"

I am who rewrote the epochs of the history of PlaneShift to what they are now. I, too, was confused by the gender references changing all the time, but Talad assured me that it\'s supposed to be like that.

Infact when I wrote them, it was a clean cut from female to male without any confusing turn-backs; but he changed it back when he put it up on the site, so meh. :P Can\'t argue with a deity (not without getting frazzled).

It only changes back once:

I think it\'s because of the \"true essence\". Laanx is, in her essence, female IMO, therefore, when she shows her essence, she becomes female again. Otherwise, his mask is so perfect that it even masks his essence, making him / it male / neutral.

At least that\'s my interpretation.

I\'d get frazzled a lot if dieties would bother to argue with me. :D

It\'s comforting to know that it was intentional...

Aah, yes that does indeed make more sense :) It might be a good idea to post something to this effect on the website, so as not to confuse newbies such as myself? ;)

Well, if people actually bothered learning the english language, and re-reading something while trying to understand what it meant, there wouldn\'t exist such problems... But people don\'t. However, don\'t expect a walkthrough of the settings just because of that. :)

It\'s completely up to you if you wish to learn about the settings, but to be honest, most people don\'t bother reading it at all. They just want to plvl their character and get as much gold as possible. That is, after all, the goal of all online games. ;)

Alright, enough of the sarcasm, and back on topic. The topic question has already been answered, so in fact I\'m just running around in the same soup as I started in, so I suppose this is the end of my post... Err... Yep.

But some people do read it, and it\'s definately appreciated! The story is so sad, I hope more gets added to it (as planeshift progresses I suppose)...guess there isn\'t much chance of Talad and Laanx making up now though :(
