Question
« on: August 25, 2004, 05:56:47 am »
I was reading about why Psybur got banned from the game, b/c he was modding and stuff and it made crystals spawn in places that wern\'t reachable by normal players. So I started thinking, how were they able to edit the game like that? Would anyone be able to edit the game to how ever they want? I dont really understand the whole concept of open coding or whatever they call it lol. But like, lets say if someone was to make a model of a monster, and put it in their game, would they like, instantly upload it to the server and then it would be in all of our games?...that sorta thing? or what?

Basically he found a way to login as anybody which means he could access things he should not have been able to access.  Most modding is the friendly kind like doing different types of window skins or adding new buttons and such.

As far as I understand, he could log in as Devs, and other, if any, characters that could place spawns at any given time. He could also log in on your account or mine, if I understood it all correctly...

That is correct, he could log in as anybody, including admin accounts. That\'s where new crystal spawn points and the NPC called \"Exdee\" came from. This ability was blatantly taken advantage of and not reported. It has practically ruined crystal hunting for everyone who plays, as most crystals now spawn in these \"cheater\'s\" locations, where nobody else can reach them.

Psybur used to be a good guy... but when you step that line, you\'re no longer tolerated.

So he was logged on as Vengeance a week or two ago when he placed the crystal spawns?  I remember that after I saw Vengeance logged on, all the new crystal spawns appeared.  And also Pogo told me that \'he was crawling around\' the hidden dimension in the temple, where there are now something like 15 spawns.

Hmm I heard there were much more than 15, anyways.  If Psybur found a way into Venge\'s account wo says he won\'t just find a way back into his own.  Or maybe he will be out for revenge.

No one garuantees this game to be un-hackable, but you can be sure that once someone has broken the rules and been caught, then it\'s likely that they will be watched (of course, it\'s possible to get around such measures).

Still, as suspicious activity is noticed, the holes will be patched.

Ok so then for anyone to be able to add stuff to the game, they have to be logged on under an admistrator or something. They can\'t just like, upload something to their game and then they upload it to the server. Good..lol...speaking of which, it brings me another question, lets say the administrators (or Development Team, whichever you want to call them) decide to add some new stuff. When I log on, will it instantly download it? Or will there be like a patch on the website that I have to manually download for it to work? or what? thanks again!

Almost, when the client connects it sends along it\'s version number. The server can tell if the client needs to be updated and will let you know.  From there you run a seperate \'updater\' application that will download any updated files.   We want to keep this as a seperate since adding it directly to the main game introduces several other problems.

I haven\'t logged in MB for a while, so I never knew what happened. But is the crystal hunt permamently screwed up? I mean, couldn\'t someone undo what he did?

And I never expected a guy like Psybur to do something like this...It blows my mind how people who like the game would want to ruin it for everyone...

Its a shame he did that. Just curouse but what powers do the devs have I have just heard they can change the location of crystals but can they do other things (EG stop anyone from logging into the server)

Well, technically the devs can do anything they want :)

If they have a means of identifying a cheater, they can prevent connections, delete their accounts, or whatever.

I take it that this \"updater\" is the Updater that is found in the program listings with Planeshift? And thats a very good idea, keeping it seperate and stuff.

Well, I\'ve been playing it recently and I can defiently see a decrese in the number of crystals that I find through out the world. But it dosn\'t make sense how they wouldn\'t be able to delete the spawn points. I mean they were able to add them...so what the fizzle? lol
