running PS behind a NAT
« on: September 20, 2004, 10:07:59 pm »
I\'m behind a school NAT and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get around/through it.  I was thinking of proxying but would rather not if possible (school doesn\'t like it very much).  Any help would be fabulous!

BTW, does anyone know what ports PS uses?

UDP 13331

PS doesn\'t use server -> client AFAIK except when you create your char. So if you can access the internet without any port restrictions, then you should be fine to play

It says: \"the server is not running or is not reachable\"  I tried replacing the server name (planeshift.fragnetics.com) with the ip (203.81.47.74) and to no avail.  Am I missing something?

This will AFAICS happen because the NAT router doesn\'t route back UDP connections. Therefore, the client will never get a response off the server even if the original request did reach the server. Solution is the same as for linkdead: make sure that incoming UDP on said port is routed to your machine (port forwarding), and that every firewall (personal as well) lets through the traffic on this port in both directions. Don\'t forget that a larger network will have intermediate routers and firewalls that need to be reconfigured appropriately as well.

Just a recommendation for people out there, I know you don\'t have the choice of what brand your school uses for their routers, and it might be an intentional blocking issue compared to tweaking needed to be done, but I just wanted to state that Linksys routers really pwn when it comes to NAT.  No forwarded is needed for any application that is client only based.  So for that reason and many others, I just want to recommend Linksys routers to anyone out there that has a choice.

I hope you are able to fix your problem.  Some people end up having to make a tunnel because their school only allows certain ports used, and I\'m not even sure if tunneling would work in this case.

I haven\'t fixed it, and even if tunneling would work, I wouldn\'t know how to do it.  I don\'t really know that much about networking and NAT\'s, just the basics.  I may have a connection to get a tunneler from someone, so just for confirmation, the only port I need open is UDP traffic on 13331?  I think he may have to change some program coding (it was coded to allow Total Annihilation 1v1 multiplay).  Thanks for the help guys!

I just hope I have something figured out when CB comes out!

Turns out that tunneler I have access to won\'t do the job, it\'s set up for a specific game that works very differently from your standard server->client system.  I\'ve searched for stuff on google and some other places to no avail.  It\'s just too far over my head to even know what to look for.  If anyone finds anything to bypass a NAT firewall (even if only on port 13331) be sure to let me know.  I miss my PS :(

Sadly there is no way to bypass it (well I shouldn\'t say that, but the only way I can think of would be setting up a proxy on another pc that has full unblocked access, which would be a pain). The best idea I could recommend is talking to the IT people at your school.  If anyone can help, they can, since they would be the ones that have control over the routers.  Good luck! =)

Wrong.
