the good the bad and the downright rude
« on: September 28, 2004, 02:16:21 pm »
A little something to get off my chest. to those of us who have been at this for a year+. when i see a newbie come on to PS for the first time its disheartning when they ask a question just to get treated as an idiot( didnt you go read the forum) or strait out (go to the website before you ask us). now true seeing this is not as common as some games but still we need to embrace any new players we get and help when we can.

now dont everyone flame me at once, if your not the ones im talking about then dont jump me. and if you are???????????

Well if you\'re referring to who I think you\'re referring to, then let\'s put it this way: if they listen to our first replies, which are generally helpful and intended to save them from further embarassment (i.e. telling them to read stickies), then the whole community will welcome them with open arms and happy faces. :)

If they ignore us, and carry on posting without reading anything, without reading the stickies we *told* them nicely to read, then really they\'re quite lucky that this is the Internet- because attitudes like that tend to create hair-ripping frustration. :)

As allway moogie you leave people standing corrected.....ok so yeah some of these noobs just wont listen to reason and insist on everything being drawn out for them but there have been some cases where i guess people just get tired of being asked and they decide to blast the next noob question. hopefully its not a trend that is going to catch on...

from reading a fair amount in the forums (and maybe i\'m desensitized to it) it doesn\'t seem to be a trend, sometimes people have bad days and are sarcastic or rude ( i know my comment about testing phases being obvious wasn\'t as nice as i prefer to be and i probably wouldn\'t have posted it that way today) it happens on all boards to all people (although i must say i don\'t think i\'ve seen a post from moogie like that), but all we can do is try to help the newbies and try to save some of the mods/devs from answering the same questions five billion times to make thier day a bit better ( i know my day would be better if i didn\'t have to answer users repeditive questions all the time hehe :) )

just some thoughts

I don\'t see any problem with telling them to go read the forum/newbie-help-site/guide before asking questions that can be answered by those locations.  Most of us are tired of seeing the same poorly-typed questions over and over.  A lot of them don\'t even realize it\'s a pre-alpha.  Telling them to read a site and providing a URL gives them a place they can go to to learn all of the stuff at once, preventing people like me from getting stressed-out.

Ok, so I said it once and I\'ll quote it again. Keep in mind that a long time has passed since the first time I said it, but it still hold true.

Quote
In the defense of the forums I never had any problems (with the exception of the occasional disagreement) here. Why? Because I am analytical by nature. I tend to read all the documentation and scroll through everything before I jump up and say ?Oh, oh, look at me I have a problem/suggestion/story?. I was welcomed with open arms by, well, everyone that I met/talked to. I never had problems in game or out.
The problem with my perspective is that some people are not that way. I understand that. If everyone was like me than there would be no novice writers, programmers or artists because we would all hide in some back room somewhere until we new for certain we had it all figured out. But on the flip side I am relatively new and I get really annoyed with the repetitive questions and their frequency. I mean how many times do the moderators, players and programmers have to answer questions that are stickyed? ...

Yea I just quoted my self, but why reinvent the wheel.

iv never really minded the people who continue with the same questions. true i havent been here long and iv only answered a few of the newb stuff but iv grown accustomed to it. what i find weird right now is that suddenly people are asking how to questions that iv only heard asked in the game. while i havent played since july due to computer problems (stupid thing blips me out if i can ever manage to get on) cant people still answer those in the game?

When someone makes a post about something that is being discussed in another thread only a few lines down they deserve to be flamed.  Why should we answer the same question over and over again because someone refuses to read a little bit first.  That\'s just lazy.

People need to learn that others aren\'t here to wait hand and foot on them, and that they need to do some things for themselves.

These n00bs that do this register, ask an over-asked question, then leave.  They do not contribute, they\'re just used to people doing everything for them.

Trust me, stick around a few more years and see how jovial you are.

Only n00bs don't quote themselves...

By all means, send the new citizens my way! -)

Since I am still a newbie...and will always be a newbie...I don\'t mind answering questions over and over.  Many times people pass me, running by on their quests or errands...and I am still standing in the same place the next time they come through.  That is because I am answering newbie questions that players ask me.

I don\'t really think any one new player \'deserves\' to be flamed.

I especially find it hard to believe the excuse \'I\'m sick of answering the same old questions\'. Arn\'t you sick of flaming every newbie asking the same questions? or have you developed a taste for it? Just let it go, take a breather and ignore them.

I admit the type of posts in question should reside in the newbie forum and they do tempt fate be posting in the wrong forum. I would hope the question was answered and the person told them their mistake and are only \'flammed\' or \'stonewalled\' if they repeat that same mistake.

The players seek answers quickly and not sifting through the forum search results may seem or may very well be lazy, flamming them isn\'t the answer though.. ignoring them would be better.

Try and consider the number of people who starting reading these forums, who would normally contribute. However seeing such a hostile environment where someone can\'t even get a question answered choose not too.
Why? Its not worth the heartache, after seeing that someone can\'t get a simple question answered the impression presented is that there is little chance for a constructive debate of an interesting concept.

The point I\'m trying to get across is flamming people while it may feel good in response to your own frustration is in fact damaging to the image of the board and in turn the community.

Hopefully even if you disagree with me this manages to reach everyone on some level, I only ask you to consider you actions and show a little more respect that is all.

Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances.
