New sample Map
« on: October 18, 2004, 08:12:14 pm »
Here\'s a sample map:
I\'ve gotten better at this map making stuff. I haven\'t added anything yet just some mountains, two forest, and a river.

Also i\'m gonna make everything smaller so I can fit more stuff into a single map. Anyways I think it looks much better than my old ones.

EDIT: Anyone know why my image gets chopped in half?

I was wondering about why my computer only loads 1/2 the image, it sort of looks good from what I can tell, try to upload it again only with a different name first. that may fix it...

Nice work Kuiper,  maps are one of my fav parts of fantasy. Nothing quiet brings the land to life like being able to look at map of the \"land\" just as long as its never totally accurate and leaves much mystery. I used to study LOTR maps in the books when they would talk about parts of the land, and try to peice stuff together in my head :)   lol Iam such a nerd and I love it

Unsure why your image is getting choped, I used to have that problem if i tried to exit to quickly out of paintshop pro before it fully finished (slow computer)

did you ever edit the photo and cut in half and accidentally load the wrong cut in half one? it goes back all the way to your account.

I\'m back.... Perhaps in black.

I don\'t believe so. I mean if you check properties, the size of the picture is larger than it shows. I\'ll try re-uploading the picture.

Yeah, try that. Even if you link to the pic, it is chopped in half. It\'s like the bottom half went transparent. Wierd.

It\'s a really old map and only half of it has survived the years.

EDIT: Okay check first post, I fixed it.

Ooc: Hey ShadowFax how did your make your map look like that, did you use a plug-in? I used a diffuse-glow plug-in for my version.

Select the entire picture (ctrl+A), then use the lasso tool and alt (- selection) to cut out the pieces from the edge.  That is how I cut out the pieces on my sig picture.  Alternatively you can select the whole thing, enter quick mask mode and run the crystalize filter (filters>pixelate>crystalize), exit quick mask, inverse selection (ctrl+shift+I) and then clear (backspace) the pieces out of there, though that will produce some different results.  He also took the burn tool and burned the edges a bit (like I did on my sig).  Looks like he also did a clouds (render>clouds) overlay with one of the layer blends going.  Maybe did a couple more things also...

Edit:  I think he also applied a texture to the bottom portion by applying it to a whole layer, then using a layer mask, then one of the layer blends.

Yea I used some random filters. Usually I just mess around in Photoshop and couldn\'t make a picture twice because I have no idea what I did the first time. I remember I used difference>clouds and the burn tool. Also I blended a teaxture over it. Then I sued the magic lasso to cut the edges.

I like the 2nd one better.  When you burn along the edges, try making it more random, not so straight (specifically the right and bottom edges).  Also, I\'m not sure if you did this, but use the burn tool in the center also (to a lesser extent) and use a combination of all 3 burns (highlights, mids, and shadows) to get an effect you like.  It looks pretty convincing though, great work.

unfortunately I don\'t have Adobe Photoshop, I have Microsoft Photodraw. I did have a \"copy\" of photoshop once my friend gave me but I don\'t know where I put it. :(
