just got foxfire, and lovin' it
« on: October 19, 2004, 03:08:34 am »
I have heard many arguements and debates about web browsers, and i never really took sides, i didnt need anything more than IExplorer.

but then one fateful day i got... REALLY BAD SPYWARE OF DOOM!!!

so after i re-installed my HD i said enough is enough, and i went to search out good browsers. I have tried a few and find Foxfire to be the most efficient and user friendly. i ran a few pop-up tests, and even tried the original link that i got the viruses and spyware from, it blocked it all!!

so if you still have Internaet explorer i advise you to get Foxfire! the internet is full of garbage, and foxfire is just what you need to keep it out :)

edit) o yea, and if you have windows service packs 1-a or 2, then you dont get java, but foxfire does. Also it seems to load pictures faster, dont ask why :P

firefox is alright. i dont prefer it tho. Opera is just so... slick. from the ability to view windows as tabs, to the status bar telling you how fast your connection is going and how much of the page is downloading. theres just tons more. if your looking for safety, firefox is definally not the safest thing by any standard. its more like the first small pocket of defense against spyware. If you really want protection go get a firewall, most are free and VERY effective.

I\'m back.... Perhaps in black.

I use Opera myself.  The latest version looks very nice and I am so used to tab browsing and mouse gestures now.

you can get all that for Firefox too, plus add some nice script extensions that allow you to block virtually ALL adds on virtually all pages.. Extremely nice to be rid of those annoying adds that are everywhere nowadays. Plus there are lots and lots of nifty extensions out there to be found.

I don\'t know if opera has the addblock feature, if not, I\'d never use it.. Grown too accustomed to the no-adds\'ness of Firefox :P

Ya, I\'ve been using alternative browsers ever since IE came out. I currently use FF or it\'s predcessor FB. I love the ability to turn off the whole web-crap that\'s basicly just clogging my connection. The only thing I currently need is an ability to selectively disable this flash-junk, because it\'s being abused for extremely annoying ads (ads that don\'t just move and blink and whatnot, but that also suck big time by playing dumb music!). Currently, I\'ve gotten rid of flash alltogether (by removing the appropriate dll), which isn\'t too bad. I somehow feel it\'s a giant security risk anyway.

I had the same thing happen to my IExplode (which is what I call it now for obvious reasons). Luckily, I already had Mozilla installed and I see no real reason to get a different browser.

Mozilla sometimes eats up my RAM though...

I run Zone Alarm, Norton anti-V, Ad-aware, spyware doctor, spyware S&D,  McAfee,  and Norton system works, along with
Firefox now instead of Internet explorer, I am very pleased with the pop-up blocker and other features, this is just another step to running a very clean and neat machine.

if you cant tell that i am obsessed with having a perfectly clean system by now.... :P

I run Firefox, and have windows firewall, which is all I need to keep my Pc secure. The lack of backround apps also keeps it ultra fast :D

most of my apps are just scans, they dont use recources, except for zone alarm(uses 7,660 k mem) and norton(uses next to nothing)  not to mention i have good processor, think its 2.8 and i have it overclocked quite a bit.

I\'m an Opera user myself. I prefer it because of its usability although it has stupid characteristics when it comes to displaying plain HTML. It all conforms to W3C but differs from the implementation of most other browsers.

I hope for new versions for Opera/Mozilla/Firefox soon though, see http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/378632
