Well first off, If somone was behind you you shouldnt be able to see them... like in rl so that us theives can acutally pull off a backstab also begin abelt o scale walls would be nice.

lol the ability to pull cloaks over ones head, :D

Also in some games you are warned when someon has robbed you this shouldnt be. heh and like in some games  Guards insta appear and insta kill you for stealing. Guards should be placed around the town but are not invincivble and should be able to kill or run away from... well thats all i can fink of for now. Oh and when you walk you should be able to hear footsteps unless someone is Sneaking along :)

I am ok with being able to run from guards, but you SHOULD NOT be able to kill guards.  If guards could be killed, such as in RS, there would be no protection from new players, and people could go around and take anything they wanted.  Running from them is ok, cause they shouldnt insta kill you, so u can run, but u cant beat one.

Well for one people should not be able to steal big items off a persons body thats just unrealastic.
Now if someone steals something there should not be an alart IF they are not Greedy and take to much or get busted the higher your theif skill the less chance you have of the person seeing you do it and the more you can attempt to steal, Now instead of the avr you walk up to them click steal and see what you get, 3D Mdl should come up with the persons bag (Or belonging you clicked on) and you have to fiddle throught it as fast as you can without disturbing the player. take to long the attemp fails, Take to much you get busted.

first all whatz a theif?

and I think thieves should not be able to sneak up behind people and steal their victims asses off! cuz I guess the victim would notice that. so u should steal fast and silent and U shouldn\'t take too much cuz they would notice that too. maybe u could just slice some1\'s backpack open and steal!

the guards should be killable just for realism. cuz if U come on to one guard with 20 people the guard won\'t win thatz fake. but it has to take 20 men and very strong men too. So u can do damage to the guard.

Ok, I understand the thieves plight on most games?I also will say I will do my best so that various ?dubious?  types of behavior be well implemented. You can read that as making the thief types have a fun and enjoyable gaming experience. As of right now it?s still in the working things in phase, but I?ll tell you this.

The first incarnation will not have any negative ways to treat other players, as such no killing or  pick pocketing of players, NPC guards, NPC Merchants, Major NPC types?those that are killed will not be coming back, so if a quest or something opens that NPC to attack?and he is killed he will stay killed.

There are a lot of things still in the air, so keep your hoods on, and don?t get snickered?I for one hope to make the game a thief friendly place?

Guards should be perfectly killable, once you\'ve reached a high enough level. It\'s not reasonable to expect that the king would be guarded by a force primarily consisting of 1st or 2nd, or even 4th or 5th level characters. But at the same time, a small town isn\'t going to be guarded by the strongest people in the land. (Well, unless it\'s a very unusual small town...). It should MAKE SENSE. I think that, in general, a powerful character that gets caught breaking the law should be dealt with via bounties, rather than via the guards. That automatically adds more quests for those who want to be bounty hunters, and also adds more character interaction. It DOES, unfortunately lead to PKing of a sort... but good characters and evil characters SHOULD kill each other occasionally, ne?

Oh, and MilowEd: Only of you\'re good.

I like the idea of bounties when people break laws. It would open up a whole new area of play, asking around to find out if anyone has seen the character and trying to track them down. I think it would actually be kind of fun to have a bounty on your head, but it might get annoying sometimes. I also like the idea of the thieving being up to the player as well as the character with it bringing up the victim\'s inventory and you having to look through it and take the optimum items (can\'t be too big or heavy but its gotta be valuable or at least helpful) and get out of there fast. Sounds exciting. I dunno about the super-strong-invincible guards...I think it should be more realistic...sure they should be strong but not invincible like they are in some games....they should definitely respawn within a certain amount of time after their death though, just to keep things interesting.
...hehe...elipses...hehe......weeeee....I like elipses.....fun fun elipses.........elipses is like...elispsesish.....okay...I\'m done now...gah...just did it again...ah man...there it was again...I keep doing it...NUUUU!!!! There...all better...oh wha? NO! :D I\'m okay now...or not...

.hack//sign

has anyone of you guys (and girls) ever seen .hack//sign - there\'s my ideal of a guard - a group of players (preferably devs) that are sworn to protect the players and keep things tidy and at peace. these guards would also be, maybe not immortal, but at least very superior to other players and be uniformed. they would also have access to everywhere. there would also have to be some NPC guards, that would let you pass places you\'re not usually intended to go at (not as a normal player or without special permission) only if you told them the right password (which guards would naturally have!)

why preferably devs? because they have no intention at all to cause havoc, and are (probably and hopefully) so keep of their work that they\'ll protect it and its peace at any cost :)

i\'d maybe think of becoming such a guard, but i\'m more of a lone wolf, so i\'ll probably just do my best to keep the World peaceful, tidy and fair  with my own abilities and as much as i can :]

Yeah, it might be a good addition to have the type of guards as in .hack//SIGN ... The only difficulty is only finding the right people.

Btw,  I really recommend the .hack series.
It\'s rather relevant to all off us, I think, as it revolves around, and mostly in, a MMORPG called \"The World\".
As far as I know, there a three different .hack series:

SIGN
Legend of Twilight\'s Bracelet (aka DUSK, I think)
Liminality (the OVA)

I would love to see thieves in the game!
But you need a justice system that involves the players.
Like Wanted poster/Bounty hunter system where you take a chance stealing stuff.
So that if you say make the right roll to pick pocket you but some one notices that you where around when it happens.
Then they could complain to the guards and if enough people notice stuff missing when your around and complain to the guards(the Game Server); you would have a bounty on your head.

Like wise if you fail at pick pocketing, you would have an automatic complaint registered but, this would be registered with formal character complaints.
So there would need more than one to have a bounty placed you.

Each of these complaints would have a decay time. So as time went along the bounty would lessen till it went away.

Pretty simple database stuff, as far as the bounty/wanted information goes.
Also when you went to look at the Wanted posters.
The game would bring up a seperate scrollable GUI.
So you wouldn\'t have to Render that kind of realtime information in the 3D world.
