Secret Windows OS Projects
« on: November 17, 2004, 05:36:39 pm »
Windows Codename: Longhorn
[Will be released in 2006 (already in alpha stage)]
Longhorn is a work in progress, mostly current generation technology, and much of what\'s in there is just the same old stuff from XP. Major UI work, a database-based file system, integrated DVD burning

Windows Codename: Blackcomb
(Will be released around 2010-2012)
Windows Blackcomb will be the successor to Windows Longhorn and Windows Server 2003. Currently there is not much information known about Blackcomb, except for the fact that it will include both a server and client release.

Longhorn is not secret for sure since a long time ago :)
And as for Blackcomb, yes I\'ve heard some rumors some time ago, but I didn\'t know it will really exist.
Well, I will preorder a copy of it from now :D j/k

Longhorn not so secret. I have had a copy of Build 4074 for awhile now. I recieved it from the MCSE subscription discs and stopped using it because of how buggy the current release is. I have not seen if there have been any later builds because I was not real impressed with the current versions and figured I would just wait to mess with it until it got to a later state.

Yes, I\'ve heard of Longhorn ages ago. I even have read at least the name \"Blackcomb\" somewhere. Anyway, the idea of making a client and server version is the final push of M$ to give even fewer value to the customer, probably for a higher price, and certainly rising the price for the server version to even more ridiculous values. I\'ll be sure to keep avoiding their so-called \"products\".

Because they\'d have run into IP problems when calling it \"Green Day\" :)
Well, they are percieved as evil (whereas \"ruthless\" would fit better IMO) and therefore want to keep this image, and this is done by using names like \"longhorn\" (as reference to the devil) or blackcomb (well, probably as reference to this feary tale \"Snow White\" (or which one featured the poisened comb?), and black is always evil :P )

Probably they had a contest and drew a random card. It might as well have been \"Junkpile\", maybe that\'s the release after Blackcomb? :)

Maybe they just want to sound 1337? |3|_4(|<(0|\\/||3!!1!1!111!1oneone

ACTUALLY, the codenames for longhorn and blackcomb are from a ski resort that the MS bigwigs like to visit. just like win95 and win98 were codnamed after cities, memphis and chicago. BTW, I have build 4051. does 4074 have Avalon yet? I would love to see it...

Secret?  Maybe a couple years ago.

Blackcomb was slated to be the next windows release but a bit after development started longhorn came into the picture and took over that spot.  BC is therefore supposed to be the next next windows release with a possible release date somewhere around 2012 (or so I read).  How accurate is that?  I have no idea.  :P

I think it is dumb that they aren\'t including the new NTFS search in the release (it is not a new filesystem).  That\'s half the draw.  The rest of the draw is in stuff I am completely un-interested in.  I\'m thinking that upon longhorn\'s release I will go straight linux.  I\'m just not interested in their blatant OS X ripping (/me hates OS X).

i heard that the search will be included, as a service pack some months later. I dont know why MS would do this. As for me, I hate Windows, any Mac OS, and every Linux distro. so i guess im SOL. :p

Well, I use windows xp pro and server 2k3 just for compatability and all of those darn repair and networking classes ive taken. I DONT use Linux because A: I dont want to have to learn another command line based OS, and B: most distros wont work with my system configuration, which has some obscure hardware that linux doesnt have drivers for, or it has conflicts with my three video cards and doesnt work at all. I tried recently to compile Gentoo, but that only produced a lot of errors for me to ponder over, and i gave up on that. I hate Macs for their dern ONE BUTTON MOUSE. *shudders* And again with the not wanting to learn another OS. (I might if I had access to a Mac, and the time to play with one, but college and work are very effective at killing free time.) Ive never tried BSD, and ive never heard of LFS.

A version of Avalon is in Build 4074.
I had to uninstall and reinstall it so many times because of the bugs I finally gave up on it though.

Umm, IceFalcon, that won\'t be the release name, it\'s just a codeword for a work in progress. There was a Playstation in progress codenamed REX, which was axed in favour of the PS2. I can\'t remember PSX\'s codename (that console seems amazing, can\'t wait for it to ship internationally.)

You know what really annoys me about those big corporate types? Planned obsoleteness. That means they plan problems in the products they release, so we will need to buy the \"successor\" which could just as easily (until XP) have been a bug fix patch. XP was a breakthrough in Windows. I hear Server 2003 was too.

The proof of this planned obsoleteness is that they have already started planning the successor to a product that isn\'t even available yet. This disgusts me. If they weren\'t so greedy, they might just release a working product that will continue to do just that.

I like Red Jelly Beans!
