Airbrushed Klyros
« on: November 18, 2004, 07:15:09 am »
I started work on an airbrushed version of a klyros using the black and white outlined concept art from the site. Here is what I have so far. It is far from done but I think its coming along nicely. Comments welcomed:

Nice, kinda too fuzzy though, just a thought. Keep up the good work though.
Warning: Prone to common sense.

I\'ve never worked with an airbrush, but I think you work in layers, with details and sharper edges being somewhere near the top.  I think Dameon is just putting the base layer down.  Maybe I have this airbrushing concept thing all messed up though...

It\'s looking fabulicious so far, can\'t wait to see it finished.

Did you use a *REAL* airbrush, or are you Photoshoping(GIMPing?) it?

As far as I know there are more techniques -> But you\'re right.

Whooa, The amount of real ART seems to increase at this forum (Desert Enkidukai, This very awesome Klyros.

And no this doesn\'t look like GIMP or Photoshop
I want to be a flame, to crumble to ash, but never ever burnt.

I want to rise higher, rise up to the heavens, but sink, just sink down deeper and deeper into nothing,

I want to be an angel, a chosen, a devil, but I am just a creature that ever wants what it wont get.

What am I missing? For all I can see, it is a blurry version of the Klyros in B/W, with green clothing instead of blue and the golden thing removed? Not to criticise, but how is this \"real ART\"?

Well, as much as I wish I was that good with a real airbrush, it is done in Photoshop :P. Its using the paint tool as an airbrush (click the little airbrush picture in the tool bar). It uses a bunch of masked layers (one for each element... skin, clothes, gold trim, etc). Its very much unfinished, thus why the clothes are messed up and it looks blurry. You were right though arcanefalcon. Using either a real airbrush or photoshop, the fine details are done after the base shading layers are done.

It is art Seytra because I made the shading and skin and clothes, etc only using the black outline from the concept drawing page. I didn\'t use the one from the races page and change the color/make it blurry :P. Like I said, its very much a work in progress

So it\'s sort of like a tracing of the original PS character sketch, just with your own colouring?

I really like airbrushing, but with a real aibrush, not a computer. It is harder to control, and much harder to fix any mistakes.
You do indeed work in layers, and sometimes many of them. It\'s really annoying when you make a mistake on a highlight and ruin the entire thing, also proper masking is essential.
Using a PC is a cheating way if you ask me. Too easy to fix problems, I couldn\'t airbrush like that on PC though, I am far better with the real thing, so I can\'t really criticise.

As for the real art comment, that will open an annoying debate. I assume you\'ve seen the Campbells soup can? I don\'t call that real art, but apparently it is. If an artist says it\'s art, agree... It\'ll save you a headache.

I like Red Jelly Beans!

Ah yes, Andy Warhol... please no debates about him.

Before, all this was done with the mouse. Now I have been introduced to a lovely tool called the tablet. I don\'t know how I ever lived without one. I\'ve only used a small one at school, but I am purchasing a nice big one for home. Its gonna cost me around $300 or so but its well worth it.

As for if it is actual art or not, it really doesn\'t matter to me either way if it is. I\'m just having fun and solidifing my knowledge of photoshop in the process. Whether you consider it real or not is up to you.

I like it, it\'s cool. It shows some effort, my artistic skills stop at ms paint :).

Here is an updated version. As you can see, I added the gold trim, the jewels, and started refining the face (the eye on the  last one made it look like an alien) and shading more of the skin:
