If you are under linux please use xchat (or maybe a program called b i t c h x (without space but sorry for this name... it\'s not my idea...) but I dont know how it is)

If you are under Windows download irc... but I dont think you are forced to download it directly... I though you just need to go to an irc page and its automatic...

PS : for b i t c h x see the following link : http://collegelinux.org/photogallery/displayimage.php?album=random&cat=&pos=-1

His/her, mostlikely a him uses abusive language yes.

What triggered it?

I hope that ingame this chat is changed so that not everyone has to read trough all the nonsence.

Perhaps that\'s the reason i never visit chat rooms cause it\'s really really empty, nonsence talk about he hugs her, she hugs back and more \'o that! I sincerely hope that the ingame chat box will/cannot be used in such a way!

That would be a great turn off for me in this very promising project which is Plane Shift!

You can get Xchat even for Windoze. Download it from:

Edit: They somehow have managed to transform the license to a shareware sort of thing... yuck. Link removed.

That is music to my ears. :) This way, we can deal with abusers and also with abusive reporters. Nice.

I wonder if there will be things like guild chats...

Even though a global chat is a bad thing some times all someone wants to do is have a good chat with many people.. maybe each area can have a dedicated zone where people\'s mind in other similar areas are joined, effectly a planetwide chatroom of sorts that you need to walk into. I guess you can represent it with a telephone booth, though how it\'ll hold 100 people is anyone\'s guess.

As for irc, there used to be a public java chat but I think it\'s dead... so the next option for windows is mIRC, as long as you don\'t click every link in sight there shouldn\'t be too many problems.

Edit1: Errr... forgot to note that people who are inside the are speak like they are in perpetual auto shout, only difference is that people outside can\'t hear what is inside and vice versa.

For this, I advocate dedicated chats / channels.
- say channel
- guild channel (though questionable by RP purposes / realism)
- group channel
- OOC channel

Each of these would be separate windows with the ability to completely remove them from the game window. They should also have ignore commands for ignoring the user in the current channel only or in all channels.
This way, there should not be any problems anymore.

/shout would be an area thing but show up in the \"say\" channel, because for questions the OOC channel would be better for it\'s global reach, and therefore /shout would be IC shouts which would therefore belong to the \"say\" channel.

Can you eliminate this in a game?  No, people are stupid.

I for one will miss global chat, ah well, \'tis for the better.

Ciry\'s/Aineko\'s Mods have the /ignore, AFAIR.

No, one can\'t eliminate stupidity. :(

However, the OOC channel would be global, because restricting OOC stuff by IC borders would be pointless IMO.

Only the official Windows build is shareware, there\'s a free one available on this site: http://www.silverex.org/

You could easily have checked that the guild channel, say and group channel already are in CB.

As for an OOC channel. It\'s completely unneeded. If you want to talk to someone about what happened yesterday, you don\'t need a channel for it anyway, you can use /tells, which is something people have yet to understand in MB. And as long as people don\'t know the diffrence between private and public chatting, there is no global chats. So, grab a copy of whatever IRC client you like if you wish to talk about useless stuff with a lot of people, and keep the game free from the massive amounts of worthless spam that comes with such a channel. Even the forums have a place dedicated to offtopic mishmash, so no complaints about not having anywhere to talk about icecream or your collection of nuclear waste bins. :)

And a list of GM\'s.

- Keldorn
- Bora
- Grakrim

...and, as always, developers and admins have all GM powers, and more.

It was meant to emphasize that separation of the channels is a good thing and also to show that I don\'t merely wish for an OOC channel.

The thing is that I don\'t like to switch to another program when I\'m in a game. Also, once this switch has been made, it\'s less likely that one will switch back, as one doesn\'t see possible incentives anymore.
However, I know that there would be lots of junk traffic generated by this, but it would also be more easy on chatters in RP channels, because one can easily tell them to use the OOC chat (which can be reached conveniently) than to switch to another program. Also, it would make OOC chatter in the RP channels way less likely, which is what we\'re aiming for, isn\'t it? As you said yourself, /tell isn\'t very intuitive, but a dedicated OOC chat is. However, as I said on another thread when this topic came about, I might actually make an IRC mod for PS, which should get rid of all the traffic issues.

Yes, there will be other chat options, the /tell feature is still there, as well as /guild.

As for IRC, you can download a program, or find a java applet on someone\'s site. I know Rebirth, Explorers, Bloodclaw inc., and the Mercenary Guild has them on their site. Its a lot easier if you are just going to use it once.

Well, since I strongly detest all kinds of browserchats and Java(Script), this isn\'t anything I would want to see. I\'ll keep using real, C / C++ or Pascal (Delphi) based standalone IRC programs. :)
Of course, for the one-time user I can see these dodgy browserchats to be an option.

Oops, there is a second page to this thread, that was meant for earlier in the discussion. ;(

And yes, the browser chat is useful for one-time instances, for example, to report someone.
