School Sports
« on: December 05, 2004, 04:31:07 am »
My school\'s sports season is quickly approaching, and I don\'t know what sport to play ?(

I\'m gonna have to chose between soccer and track, and as I\'m only in seventh grade I have never represented my school in a sport event, so I dont know which one comes with more advantages.

I am pretty evenly matched in soccer and running. My dad has been running since highschool, and ShadowFalcon if you live in detriot (cuz you said you live in Michigan) stop by Harrison High and look for John Anderson on the two minute mile. That\'s my dad.
Anyways, my fastest mile time is 5:43 and I hold the fastest and second fastest times at my school. My track coaches want me on the track team. However, my school\'s soccer team needs someone with experience, and I have played Travel State-wide soccer before, and do now. Also, everyone else is expecting me to play soccer. However, since I already play it and the team isn\'t very good, I\'m leaning towards track, although my track team isn\'t very good either, and the people that will definetly be on it are jerks (some of them). Seeing as the practices are at the same time I can\'t do both.

What would you do, and does anyone have experiencing participating in either of these sports for a school? If you do, I\'d greatly appreciate some pros and cons of each.

*Wonders if he will even do a sport because he cant decide*

I used to play basketball...

Play the sport you enjoy most. I would choose soccer, \'cause its more competative.

Well actually track is more in-school competitive at my school because people have the mis-conception that in soccer if you are fastest you are best. But there are big oafs at some of the schools who would run me over, because im 5 feet tall and only 80 lbs (yes I know, thats crazy skinny) so I\'m not too good for protecting the ball, you know? In the past I\'ve relied on my speed in soccer. Won\'t work with these big guys cuz they would steamroller me. I\'m starting to lean towards track, I guess I just had to write it down to realize it. But I\'m still on the fence, just looking in one direction (towards track). But things and people happen that change my mind, so ya never know when you live in America.
Thx IceFalcon. I think I would appreciate track more because I want to do something to make my dad proud for once.

Well personally, i have played soccer, wrestling, and track. (soccer wasnt on a school team though.) Wrestling was by far my favorite sport, but everyone on the team treated me like sh*t. That pretty much ruined the sport for me. I can tell you right now, if everyone on the track team are jerks, youre not gonna like track. I weighed 80lbs in 7th grade too, so I know what its like. People like to pick on the little guys. Other people have a way with ruining sports... I would go with soccer if i were you, especially if you are already friends with everybody else who plays. My $.02

Edit: Also, I\'m only living in Detroit while im going to college, so I dont really know where anything is. I\'m actually from the Mt. Pleasant area.

hey hey same here, i used to follow the Epl closely but ive changed my habits to playing my computer late into the night.

[on topic]
soccer pwns track ! When you think of it, i mean look in track they\'ll ask you to run in a stright line, and the tracks oval but if you like running  in stright lines thats your problem.

so soccer wins Hands down, but iam bias to.

So my best advice is you choose which ever one you feel you like better and have no second thoughts.

Oh well I\'m not sure how to get there cuz I dont live there.

I\'m not usually picked on... the guys on the track team just act as though they are the best; they do that to everyone. And I know everyone at the school, so I know the soccer players, but I would hate to play with a bad team. Then again, track is every day even on weekends....

Well, you are kinda small (well I am biased on that part considering my heighth) so I would choose track if I were you. Also, a 5:43 mile for a 7th grader isn\'t bad. I ran that speed in, I think, 9th grade. Well, how good are you with a soccer ball? Very coordinated?

Also, you said your track team isn\'t that good, but track is also an individual sport; if you are worried about a bad team, do track. You can still get first place in an event, even if nobody else places. But, you can win the track meet as a team too, so you get teamwork (somewhat) and the individual \"goodness\" of beating everyone else, if you do.

My real opinion: Ditch them both to play basketball and play American football next year, too. :D

My school doesn\'t play American football :( and I missed the basketball tryouts cuz of my State-wide soccer league practices. I think I\'m gonna go with track though.

Pros:
Track:
1. I\'m the fastst mile runner in the school
2. My dad wants me to
3. It doesn\'t require physical aggression
4. My dad wants me to
Soccer:
1. Everyone expects me to
2. It has been my main sport all my life since the last year
3. I\'ve had more experience in soccer than in track on a team

Cons:
Track:
1. Teamates are jerks.
2. Can\'t drink soda (it increases lactic acid in legs)
Soccer:
1. I already play it somewhere else
2. Requires physical aggression

Thats all I know atm... Judging by that what would you go with?

Well, based on what you said and by how you feel, I think you should do track. Also, running is easy after a while and it gets easier and easier and easier, if you practice.

Like I mentioned earlier, track doesn\'t rely so much on the team as it does the individuals, unless you run a relay.

2. Can\'t drink soda

That...would...kill...me. I drank cokes anyways; maybe that\'s why my time was slower than it could have been.

Other: Get bigger, move to Texas, and play some real American football. You can still run track in the Spring too. :P

But, really, if I were you I would go with track.

OK thanks everyone who posted. I told my PE coach today that I\'m 85% I\'m going with track, and he was glad.

faldrok, team for me would be kind of important on a track team. I would definetly do the mile and probably the 800 (non-team). But my other definant event is the 400 meter, in which my teamates may try to trip or humiliate me in some other way because they don\'t care about the team\'s outcome on team sports anyways. But thanks for helping me decide :)

I never knew that Soda builds up lactic acid in the legs.. I always thought my legs hur so much after running was due to a lack of stretching like everyone else. ... schools \'require\' people to join teams?
I like taking things literally, going overboard is fun! Now... why do I keep getting odd looks?

Lack of sretching is one thing that causes your legs to hurt, however, there\'s a chemical that kills lactic acid, (forgot its name) and the chemical is killed by something in soda, so yes, soda helps lactic acid build up (and that hurts a lot).

My school doesn\'t require people to try out for sports... but hey, sports are my life, have been since I ran my first mile when I was four in kindergarten. Plus, our school can\'t compete in sports if we don\'t have enough people.

Soccer is the only sport I like, but you have made your choice. I\'m with Armeen on this one.

I like Red Jelly Beans!
