why is the server not reachable
« on: December 07, 2004, 08:33:17 am »
when i try to create a character, i click \"submit\" and i wait a minute, then it tells me that the server is down or unreachable

same thing when i try to connect to the game
so if anyone can tell me why...that would be great...

oh yeah...do i connect to \"LocalHost\" or is there something i should connect to?

Why did you enter localhost as server? That\'s your own computer ;) Better leave it at the default (planeshift.fragnetics.com)

Back to Planeshift again \\o/

If you have not already fixed it, Is your firewall blocking
the out going connection. Do you have a router.
Are you even connected to the internet

He\'s probably connected to the internet as he is posting here, but you should definetly check your router and make sure it allows user defined protocol (UDP) across port 13331 in both directions.  Turn off any software firewalls as well.  You can also try putting in the ip address of the server (203.81.47.74) instead of the name of the server (planeshift.fragnetics.com) in the server section on the login screen.

Edit:  You could\'ve found all of this in the \"linkdead\" sticky in the technical help forum.  I probably shouldn\'t have repeated it all here, but I\'m in a good mood.  Check the stickies next time.

Also this post should probably be moved to Technical Help. Drummer, in the future could you please post such threads as such in the Technical Help instead of Newbie Help? Ty, and welcome to PlaneShift.

Can\'t... resist :)

PlaneShift doesn\'t use anything called \"User defined protocol\", but something called User Datagram Protocol :)

Androgos:  Forgive my ignorance, but what is User Datagram Protocol?  I thought there were only 2 kinds  of data control, the built in TCP (which is too laggy for games) and user defined which allowed the programmers to define how data control would be handled (in this case lost packets would be tossed rather than re-requested).

Transmission Control Protocol << Builtin checking of packets
User Datagram Protool << User defineable Datagram

UDP is much better to use if you want to control the flow yourself and every packet isn\'t important. TCP is much safer to use otherwise if you don\'t implement a very good checking in UDP

Okies, so I knew what it was, I just had the D screwed up.  My bad.  And this is why I do art rather than programming.  :P

Thats because the MB server has been shutdown.  You will have to wait untill CB is released before you can play again.

If you would have read the news-section, you would know that the server is offline, because there will be a major upgrade of the program.

I admitt it would be smart to prevent people from downloading 100 MB for nothing.....
