Where are they?!? What cruel fate has befallen them?
« on: December 08, 2004, 07:41:42 am »
I was looking through the setting and player guide on the main site and noticed something disturbing.  One job that is referred to over and over again in the text is missing from the player jobs.

So my question is, WHERE DID ALL OF THE SCIENTISTS GO?!    Where are the zoologists, geologists, biologists, entomologists, botanists, astrologists (well, maybe not  astrologists;)) and any number of titles that end in ?ologist?.  Were they killed, expelled, or just plain eaten by foul underworld creatures?  ;(

Who knows... but you\'re talking about MB, right? Like we keep saying: forget EVERYTHING you know in MB because it\'s no longer relevant. :)

there is no scientist anymore... It was a tragedy : in fact Laanx doesnt support the science cause one day a scientist wanted to sudy one of her teleportation gates.

And She cast a weatherstorm spell that killed every scientist: they die after a very very very long suffering time. Since that day no one wants to become a scientist...

And you? Scientists missed us cruelly... Do you wanna?

Well I guess that\'s a stupid question, as this post wouldn\'t be here if you did.

A scientist is someone learned in the field of science or an investigator of science; science means the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding and knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws.

So I don\'t get what your saying Kiern? Scientists are needed everyday. There are teacher, well where to teachers accumulate their knowledge of science? From people who explore the limitations and bounty of life and the universe: Scientists.

Also note that the information on the website is just as old as MB itself, and again, isn\'t really relevant anymore. Not saying none of the information there is true now, just don\'t take its words as gospel. :)

Kiern, that was very and unnecessarily rude. X(   You had better watch yourself or you may end up with another \"forced absence\".

If you are referring to the medieval setting of PS as having no science, then I suggest you do a google search on \"medieval scientist\" or \"medieval science\". Or, to quote you:

You actually mean to say, that you do not believe that organizations such as these did not exist in \"medieval times\"?

I don\'t see why people have to flame something they don\'t like.

Now, for people with an actual opinion--> Will or should there be any science jobs in PS in any future release?

Umm... alchemy isn\'t exactly a science. Alchemy

Alchemy is an early protoscientific practice combining elements of chemistry, physics, astrology, art, semiotics, metallurgy, medicine, mysticism, and religion. Two intertwined goals sought by many alchemists were the philosopher\'s stone, a mythical substance which would enable the transmutation of common metals into gold; and the universal panacea, a remedy that would cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely. Alchemy can be regarded as the precursor of the modern science of chemistry prior to the formulation of the scientific method.---Wikipedia

Actually by following your suggestion and googling for \"medieval science\", the very first result is a website which shows that alchemy and cartography are part of medieval science. Both are jobs in Planeshift...
Another website gives alchemy and medical knowledge (healer job in PS) as examples of it...

Science means knowing in Latin
And don\'t look at websites telling what does alchemist mean. Look at the job description. It is much more logical thing to do, since the other websites aren\'t defining term \"Planeshift alchemist\".

Very well, I concede.  In fuzzy terms, alchemy is a science.  But it does not apply to the study of creatures or bugs.  Which PS is going to need if anyone is to know how to kill the One Eyed Flying Purple Kran Eater, or what the color of the Fengar Beetle is that heals instead of poisons.

A person who studies creatures would be able to record their behaviors and stats and sell this info to other players.

You need to learn how to read, because I did not flame anyone.

And I know what you were talking about, and I am correct.
