The Tales of Sythi
« on: December 10, 2004, 11:08:38 pm »
I know this isn\'t about the PS world... and such by I thought I\'d share my little story I\'m working on :)

The Tales of Sythi

I had been hunting the herd for nearly three days now. There was no sign of them; through the mist and heavy rain I couldn?t see five feet in front of me. I was somewhere near the Sythi Valley by now, but I had lost all since of direction after last night.
The herd moved at a fast pace, one I could barely keep up with, if I was going the right way. The herd of Orcs moved through my former village, killing many. They stole what they could carry and killed anyone or anything that moved, they struck quick and without warning.
I had to have my revenge for killing everyone I knew, but it was a miracle I was still alive. Using my old sword I slew maybe 3 of them, but had to hide in a cellar once the main group arrived. Now I moved though the dark forests, filled with mist and heavy rain, there was no turning back.
With my sword strapped to my side and a bow on my back, I carried about 17 arrows which I had found. Traveling light and quick I had no real food for days, my search seemed futile.

I had fallen asleep last night, to wake to the sounds of people. After a few moments of confusion, I realized I was in a village. I knew not how I had gotten here, but here I was, lying in a bed I had never seen before.

?Your finally awake, good sir?? asked a nearby voice.
?Wha- Where am I?? I replied.
?You sir are lucky, a man found you in the woods, you are in Hythan Village.? I finally noticed that a woman sitting in a chair was talking.
?Where exactly is Hythan Village? Where is my equipment?? I had started to sit up and look at my surroundings, noticing it resembled a hospital.
?Well we are about three days out of Cynth and at the opening of the great Sythi Valley.? she replied motioning to the window.

I had gotten up and looked out the window, the mighty mountains loomed around us and the valley opened its mouth. The sight was unbelievable, then I started to feel as if my search was meaningless and that I had no chance to finish it.

?Ma?am, have there been any sightings of a heard of Orcs lately?? I asked quickly.
?No sir, there be no Orcs around here, but in the valley, the Village of Cynth seems to see man Orcs. They see maybe four to six herds a month in that area.? She replied in a quiet and worried voice.
?Where is my equipment? I must leave immediately.? Said I in a strong voice.
I am just a figment of you imagination and a byproduct of the worse accident ever... ... or so my mommy says!
Imagine your life ripped to hundreds of shreds, then think about how you just stepped in poo, welcome to my world.

?Your equipment is in the chest next to the door, if you are planning on leaving you may grab it and take care.? The woman had finally gotten up and walked to the other window.

The house was small, not very large, and by the looks of the surrounding houses it wasn?t a very large village. After her reply I slowly moved towards the chest and opened it. Inside was my sword, my bow and a few arrows, maybe seven or nine. It was all I had, I knew I wasn?t prepared to go back out to the chase.

?Ma?am, you know of a way I could make a few gold??
She moved to the door and pointed outside, ?Go see Mr. Kilyn, he might have a job for you.?
?Thank you?, and with that I left the house and made my way over to Mr. Kilyn?s house.

From outside I had gotten a better look at the town, which it could be called now, since I could finally see the full size of it. From looks it was a fairly decent sized town, probably around a few thousand people, which is a lot for this area.
I walked past several children, who ran at the sight of my armament, I took to notice and continued to the door. Upon arriving at what was probably the best looking house here I knocked.

?Who is it?? came a voice from inside.
?My name is Sethlyn, I just arrived here. I was told I could maybe get a job here??
The door opened and he peered out, ?Well, you?re the guy they found, aren?t you? My, my, the equipment is no good?? he paused for a few seconds looking my over, ?Ok, you do a little errand for me and I?ll buy you a new sword, some arrows and give you 35 gold coins.?
I was shocked, ?What would the errand be??
?Run this package to a friend of mine on the other side of town, he?s needed it for a few days. Just watch out for thieves, they run wild over there.?
?Ok, so where does he live??
?His name is Caith, he lives in a small house, and it will be easily recognizable by the distinct star and sword symbol on the door.?
?Ok, I?ll be back as soon as I drop it off.?

I walked in and he showed me the package, it was more like a backpack, no wonder he couldn?t carry it. It must have weighed about fifty or so pounds, I wondered what was in it, but decided against looking, as he was being so nice to me.
I walked for a few minutes, I hadn?t gone too far, but the area around me started to change. One could tell I was in the slums now, it was filthy and smelled like death everywhere. He must have not been joking about thieves, they would probably be anywhere in this maze of old huts.
Luckily maybe my sword might scare them off for a safe travel. Was I wrong though, I was coming through an alley through three rows of houses when I was hit. It happened so fast I was knocked down and the weight off my back disappeared. Couldn?t tell how they got it off, but it was gone.
After gaining back my senses I got up and looked around to see a several kids running around the corner. They were quick but I gave chase, ?Come back here, don?t make me hurt you!? I yelled out. Drawing my sword I ran yelling the odd threats.
I am just a figment of you imagination and a byproduct of the worse accident ever... ... or so my mommy says!

haha, you seem to be the only one enjoying this :)

-------------------------------------

Around a corner I ran into the kids again, surprised they dropped the bag and ran off. To my guess my sword probably scared them, even though it doesn?t look like it could cut butter. I was just happy enough to have the package back.
Now I had the task of finding the house again, hoping it wouldn?t be too hard. To my luck for the day I found it relatively quickly. Since I didn?t know the contents of the bag, I could only guess everything was still in it.

Upon knocking on the door I heard a voice, ?Who is it??
?I have a package from Mr. Kilyn.?
  ?Oh yes, come on in.?

It was obviously a slum house, as there wasn?t much comfort to be found in it. As I walked in I noticed the adornment of gold however, I laughed at the irony of the gold trimmed furnishings.

?Set it over there please. So did you get here alright??
?Yeah I guess? the bag was taken by some kids, I just hope everything in it is still there.?
?Don?t worry, just take this letter to Kilyn, I?m sure it?s all just fine.? He smiled and motioned to the door.

As I left I gave the quick ?Good Bye.?

My trip back wasn?t so bad, I didn?t have to carry they heavy package or worry about being robbed. The town was moving to the evening crowd as less people moved throughout the streets. I hadn?t noticed before but the town really was a higher end town, many people, and on my way back I walked through the marketplace. It was busy and packed with people, there were many shops.
With 35 gold I wouldn?t be able to buy much, maybe some food and camping equipment for my journey. Weapons and armor shops were rare here, there seemed to be none, until I saw a small hut that was advertising weapons and armor.
After a few hours and nightfall, I returned to the old man with the note. I hadn?t read what it said, but presumed it said that the package had been delivered. I reached Kilyn?s house and gave the courteous knock.

   ?Who is it??
    ?Sethlyn, I delivered the package.?
?Come on in my boy, your supplies were just delivered.?

I walked in and noticed the equipment on the table. There also seemed to be some chain mail pieces as well.

?Here?s a note, is that all for me??
?Yes, I found some cheap chain mail and decided you may need it, since you need these weapons.?
I was shocked, here was maybe 100 gold worth of stuff for a small delivery run, ?Thank You, is there anything else you need done??
?No, and here?s your 35 gold, I don?t expect you to stay around so you may take your stuff and go.?
?Thank you again, if you ever need me I will be at your service.?

I grabbed the supplies and headed for the market. After buying three days worth of bread, a backpack, quiver and a canteen I decided I needed to get a place to stay for the night. With 18 gold left I bought a room at a local inn for 5 gold. It was going to be a long night, thinking about what all has happened.

The night was long and dark, overshadowed by the mountains on almost both sides the city must have had an extra four hours of nighttime. That night I thought of my friends and some family that had been lost in my village. In my dreams I saw the faces of my friends and the few family I knew. The darkness surrounding them blurred out most of their faces.

That morning I woke up covered in sweat and a few hours later than I had wanted to wake up. After cleaning up a bit I put on my clothes and my armor. The chain mail was heavy, but I would need to get use to it as I run through the forests. Grabbing a few bites to eat from the bar on the bottom floor of the inn, I figured that I was ready to go.
The sun was blaring as I walked out the door and figured it to be around 10:00 AM. With the information I received I decided to go to Cynth and figure out where I could find the herd.

The path before me dangerous, the trail dark, the ground wet and my skills not so great, I knew the travel would be a new hardship for me. I hadn?t had any formal swordsmanship training, only some basics to use in hunting if my arrows couldn?t take down the prey.

The forest was dense, overgrown plants surrounded the path and barely any light came though the tree tops. The sounds of the forest all around me, I knew finally what it was like to wonder in the middle of nowhere.
I was surprised I didn?t find myself lost, just going on general directions I followed on to see some sign of civilization. Not knowing my exact location and seeing that the trail probably hadn?t seen travel in quite a while it seemed I was lost.
But just as I thought of being lost, I heard screams from up ahead, I panicked at first.

After a few seconds of thoughts I ran up ahead to see what it was, to my surprise a small cargo wagon was being raided by what seemed to be bandits. My skills would be no match at close range so I drew and arrow and ran into the surrounding underbrush.
The screams grew louder as I got closer, through the trees I saw two young girls and an older man. From my vision I saw only five or so bandits, well armed and obviously knowing what they were doing.
Drawing arrow back and aiming at one of the bandits I saw assaulting the girls I let it loose, hoping it would hit the target. No luck, it missed him and hit the ground, they were startled and drew back closer to one another.
Having missed I moved to not give my location away. Drawing back another arrow as I moved I targeted on the run, hoping to hit while I was moving. The arrow hit a target, not the target, but it still sent one guy to his knees.
They knew now that they had an enemy around them, somewhere.

?Jean, where is he? Is Fyrth all right?? said one of them.
?Fyrth will be alright, but he can?t move his left shoulder.? was said by who I guessed to be Jean.
?I believe to be no more than one man, hoping to scare us off, I don?t think he?ll openly confront us.? said one of the bigger ones.

I drew back another arrow and fired, then another. One missed but the other had hit one of the ones who hadn?t spoken. With opportunity open I decided to unleash an arrow as I ran towards them, hoping to get them by surprise.
Hitting one of them in the chest I ran towards the group with sword in hands. Being out numbered I turned my attention to the three hostages.

   ?Are you three ok??
?W-we are, sir? one of the girls said.

Seeing the bandits regrouped and prepared for me I had no choice but to fight. Who am I to say who I am, or what I once was, but I haven?t been truthful in what I have said.
My swordsmanship? It was unmatched, no one had ever bested me and I wasn?t about to be bested by some half-star bandits. Sword in hand I charged, they thought they had me, but they would be proven wrong.

Drawing a side slash I hit one of them, but then I had to dodge three other swords. The damage I did was slight, but I re-rounded and came back with an overhead slash to another one, crippling his right arm.
Blocking with my sword I walked back a few steps and drew back a thrust for the one attacking me. The thrust pierced his stomach area and he fell to the ground. The wound wasn?t severe and he would survive if no further injured.

The last one, frightened he got the other two comrades that were wounded by my arrows and ran. He would be back, with more to survey the scene if anything. But for now the travelers were safe.

    ?Sir, thank you.?
?Yes sir, how may we repay you?? the man spoke.
?There is no need, just be happy I was here when I was? I smiled as I turned to the children.
?Anyway sir, what may your name be??
?You may call me Sethlyn, now let me help you get your stuff fixed here before the bandits returned.?
?Sethlyn, thank you, yes we need to be going, but first may I ask where you learnt your swordsmanship??
?It is nothing to speak about, and who are you anyway??
?I am Dres, these are my daughters Alene and Theria.?

I stuck my hand out and shook his, ?Nice to meet you Dres.?

We worked a while fixing his cart and getting his goods together. I had noticed and realized many things during this time. He was an old man, but his daughters where fairly young to be his.
I wondered about a lot of things as we worked.

Once we had finished I followed them to a nearby village. There I was able to rest and restock on supplies. I spent two days in the forest and went through almost all my supplies.
Later that day I decided to find out where I was, so I asked around to several people until I got to the tavern and asked the barkeep.

?Hello, good sir. May I ask a few questions?? I asked plainly sitting at the bar with a few other people.
?What?ll it be? Need a drink?? he spoke the words as if they were all he ever said.
 ?Where might we be??
?Well you be in High Rock, sitting right on the west side of Lake Delthi.?
?Lake Delphi?? I was confused as to where that was, ?About how far are we from Cynth??
?Cynth? he paused, ?Why would you want to go there? The town?s been over run by Orcs.?
?It has? Then that?s exactly where I want to go?? I paused to think about the situation, ?So how do I get there from here??
?It?s a day and a half ride on horse back, you need to take the northern trail through the forest to get there.?
?So where can I get a horse??
?Go over to Gordon?s Farm, it?ll be easy to find, since it?s the only one.?
?Thank you sir.? I smiled and walked out the door.

The farm was about a half a mile down the road and no wonder it was the only one, this place was dead. Barely a few houses were here and the inner city wasn?t much better. The tavern was the biggest building but it was still small in comparison to other towns.
As I approached the farm I saw a few people sitting under a tree having lunch, maybe I hadn?t come at the right time. They got up as I made my way to them, setting down their food.

?Do you need something?? said one of them. There were 3 males, two humans and one elf, all wearing typical clothing of a farmer.
?Yes in fact I do, I need a horse.?
?A horse, hmm? it?ll cost you.? said the largest of the three.
  ?How much??
?Well I reckon as the owner it?ll be about 20 gold for a horse, if you?ll return it, 50 gold to buy one.?
?I don?t have enough for either, sorry to waste your time.?
?Well son, you wouldn?t have come all the way here, unless you really needed a horse. So if you do me a favor I?ll give you one of my horses.?
  ?What would the task be??
?Some goblins been stalking my lands, find their camp and dispose of them, and bring me proof.?
?Proof?? I said it softly, ?About where would the camp be??
?If I knew that? they?d be dead already, I sent 2 guys out yesterday and haven?t heard from them again.?
?Ok sir, I?ll kill the goblins, bring you proof, for a horse.?
  ?Good luck son.?

The three men went back and sat down, leaving me standing there. The task in front of me would need skill and patience, and I was severely lacking the later.
