I said I would\'nt post again, but I could\'nt resist this one.
I think I can help with the low RAM issue for my brothers in the ghetto guild.
Here is my system info
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Processor-----x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1993 Mhz
Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 48.18 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 624.45 MB
**************************************
I got around the memory issue by increasing my pagefile allocation.
My pc drags when I go by the tavern, but thats because of the dump & fileswap that takes place there.
Overall, I think I get away with quite a bit for having what I do.
I tried to keep it simple and as un-confusing as I could.
1. Make sure nothing is running in the background that isn\'t vital to system functions.
You may even choose to remove your wallpaper and/or active desktop or close the quick launch.
2. I find that the following settings work the best for the PS setup config utility.
Vertex Buffer-off
Screen res-(mine is 1024x768 but it\'s your preference or you can experiment).
32 bit color
Sound-off
UN-check load all maps and keep maps loaded
Now that thats done you can allocate more to your pagefile.
Here\'s how.
Go to
Start/Control panel/System
Click the advanced tab
Click Performance, then on the Visual effects tab
Check the dot next to \"adjust for best performance\" then click apply and then OK.
This brings you back to the Advanced tab
now click Performance then settings again,
this time youre going to click the \"advanced\" tab in the performance options window.
On the processor scheduling and memory usage tables make sure both \"programs\" dots are checked
then click apply.
After this is done on the bottom table (virtual memory), click the button that says \"change\"
Highlite whichever drive (C or D or whatever it may be but it must be on your hard drive)
In the middle table you will see a dot next to custom size, check it if it\'s not already,
then in initial size set the allocation desired, (usually in MB)
(I allocated 1200 MB which allows for plenty of space)
and then in the maximum window 1200 again. Note that these should be close to the same. The min size is basically your volume for pagefile size.
Next click \"set\" and then apply and OK right back out of each window.
Now re-start your pc. This puts a pagefile.sys file in windows.
Be warned that there are drawbacks to this, the file swap during map loads can go quickly at times and very slowly at others. I sometimes log off and then re-log in if i need to go through town past the tavern before i get to it so the files in the hd dont have to be overwritten.
And sometimes i\'ll even double un-stick to get to the Oja road so I dont have to pass through the main drag/tavern. The price I pay to play.
I also wonder if one of the devs can tell me if FAT32 or NTFS would be more efficient. Any input would be appreciated. My C is NTFS and D is FAT32. (partition)
I do advocate upgrading RAM chipsets if at all possible.
After much experimenting, this is the best config that I have found. If this is a repeated post, my sincerest apologies. I hope this post was helpful.
