Save function
« on: December 27, 2004, 03:48:27 am »
while the server is a bit buggy why not make a simple save command that will save your character to the server when you use it. that way you wouldn\'t have to exit the game to save the character. and even after the servers are all good it would be nice to have to have security of it randomly crashing or your own computer crashing after the 50k transfer of trias and the completion of a quest. just a thougt

Excellent, someone who had the same thoughts as me.. would save so much trouble as you require to log out to save. Even then its not guaranteed that it will save the game, especially if the server goes linkdead right as you log out.

Do you have any idea how much lag would be caused by people who save every two seconds? Just no.

If you think that a save function is bad.. do you still object to a savepoint?

And rapid repeated saving might be stopped by placing a delay before they can save again while they are still in the client. Maybe even have them stand around for 30 seconds while the great crystal captures their state.
I like taking things literally, going overboard is fun! Now... why do I keep getting odd looks?

I\'m getting a bit sick of these people who think that EVERYTHING will cause MASSIVE ammounts of lag. Honestly, like every thread I see in this section has somebody come in and bash the idea as being a source of lag... :/

Can you imagine how much lag would be caused by hundreds of people all attacking different monsters at the same time?! Oh wait, we have that feature and it doesn\'t cause any lag. How can it be?! :o

I cannot see this feature causing any noticable lag. Besides, if it did, there could just be a limit on how often you can do it, say, every 5 minutes or something.

It can be because the server has good bandwidth, and a strong processor, but there is  a limit to how much bandwidth and computing power it has. A hundred people telling the computer to save would take bandwidth, but thats not the point in the first place. The connection wouldn\'t lag much from that, becuase its a simple command. What would cause lag is writing to the database for a hundred characters at the same time.

And yes, if there was some sort of limit where you had to wait 10 mins between saves or seomthing then that wouldn\'t be so bad, it might handle that depending on the specs.

Well, as i see it a save command is absolutely needed, imagine having to log in and out every 10 mins just to get your char saved, wouldn\'t that cause more lag than the suggested save command?

Also I agree with you others that a timelimit would be necessary.

In the case of e perfectly stable server this wouldn\'t be needed, tho i have still to experience a mmorpg with one of those.

How does other mmorpg implement this?

Well what if the server auto saves everything every ten mins or half hour? That might cause one little lag spike for about 2 secs every 30 mins but im ok with that.
Lol Internet

Thats kinda smart, would work great if there was some kind of warning like 1-2min before it so that you could make sure that you would be doing something safe at that time.

I seriously doubt a save feature that can be used by a player at anytime would do much lag. I say if they do more than 10 saves in a matter of 2 hours then the person should be booted from ps for 2 hours. I think that a maximum of 3 saves an hour isn\'t a rediculous amount.

The only way you lose data is from Linkdeads which somehow lose some of the information you received since login. I don\'t think \"saving\" is even possible, since the Linkdead would lose record of your \"save.\" The only way is to logout or crash.

Why would that happen, if you saved wouldn\'t the info be uploaded to the server and stored permanently?

Your info is supposed to be uploaded every second, which is why you don\'t have to save in MMORPGs. Obviously, Linkdead has found a way around that...

Well obviously the save command would just do the same thing that happens to your data when you log out, without logging you out. :) I would imagine that currently, updates to your experience are stored in the server\'s memory until you log out, at which point they are saved to its hard disk. If the server crashes (the cause of the linkdead error), everything in its memory (including your experience) is lost. So there would just need to be a \"save exp to hard disk\" command.
