Crash when joining/"Requesting World"
« on: December 29, 2004, 08:33:37 am »
ok.. I got a char made, but when I click him and hit \"join game\" i get to the loading screen ,but on the second line of text , \"Requesting World\", I crash up.  Any suggestions on how I could fix my problem? Already tried no sound. No sound and Direct Sound seem to work the best for me. But I can\'t get past the world loading screen.  Help is appreciated =P

I have the lastest update and it still crashes when Requesting world.

Do i have to create a new character though as i\'m using one that i made before todays update?

Edit - Just disabled sound and it works

Mine crashes on me certain times of the day.  It seems as if it happens because there are too many people on.

FIXES:

1. Turn off sound, this is the main problem

2. Run the updater ALWAYS before you play

3. if all else fails, get a gm to reset your Characters position, this worked for Vanderbal

I am not sure this is always a good idea. Yesterday I had no problem playing for hours without a break, but today after updated to newest 29.12. client I also have the problems during joining games or during level transition... last thing I see is \"Loading World\".

Sound is off for testing.
Strange is: with a chance of 1 to 10 it works loading, no clue why or whats the difference. Whenever I see \"Starting GUI\" I am in the game - seems to be really a loading bug, maybe I simply have to delete the level-zip files, that helped for the first time.

Tried sound off, I test around a little bit, if this wont help I step back to client version of 26.12.... which ran very stable, even with sound.

I didn\'t have any of these crashing problems until i updated today [29 Dec]. I also crashed a few times when logging [when loading world] as well as doing transitions between areas. Running full screen seemed to have solved the initial logging on problem [instead of windowed, which wasn\'t a problem before the update].

So it\'s either the latest update, or something changed in the game between today and yesterday.

...exactly the same for me, no problems till update today.

I tested a little bit and the only solution I found is to set planeshift to 800x600,32bit fullscreen disabled sound disabled (my desktop is 1024x768,32bit).

I had a few problems but after I updated it got increasingly worse.  I was not able to connect for about six hours.

@ Adair: nice attitude. You want the bug fixed but are too lazy to even post a decent bug report, like including the diagnostics file.

As for the problem: this seems to be related to certain systems only (probably an OS issue), and has crept up with the latest update.

I tried now to start the game and do level transitions
with the following config and it worked (I tried to connect to server about 20 times to verify this works):

set planeshift to 800x600,32bit
     fullscreen must be disabled
     sound must be disabled

desktop is set to 1024x768,32bit

I can play with this configuration, but only when I set mouse-curser outside of planeshift window during level-loading ( \"loading world\" ) and placing mouse-cursor in game window again when its loading and I am standing on plaza. When I leave mouse-cursor inside planeshift window it crashes with the same exception as described above.

When I am in the game then, there is no problem - I can play and move through level transitions.

When I try in fullscreen mode I do not even get any exception, only a black screen and an (invisible, in background) error-message-popup from windows - maybe with the same exception as in non-fullscreen mode.

My system is Win 98, 512MB, GForce 2 Ti 64MB, newest official drivers (dated 16.12.2004 from nVidia)

Thanks a ton, Ronxena. I haven\'t tried this yet, but the fix to your problem sounds like the way I got it to work only once.  once again, thanks.
