viruses
« on: January 01, 2005, 09:37:31 pm »
I was wondering if you guys are doing something to help prevent viruses.  I got a nasty one on my computer that did a good deal of damage.  I\'m not sure if I got it from Planeshift or not, so I am just wondering if the devs are going to take any measures at all to help prevent them.

There are two types of people in this world: The Pinky and the Brain.
Which one are you?

I highly doubt you got the virus from PS.

I agree with Lomir...

The chances of you getting a virus from an authentic PS download and install is nil.

Maybe YOU should take some measures and get a virus scan.

This isn\'t even the right forum...

welll..... viruses can be anywhere. Even in the PS installer. But i think that the devs are takeing good care of the serwer so i think that where shouldn\'t be any viruses in PS.

/me doubts also you got the virus from Planeshift.

If you have downloaded the install-files you can check the filesize and checksum given on the download-page.
This will prevent you from downloading a modified client version from any download mirror.

And since there is no program code transported from the Planeshift server to the Planeshift client you will not be able to get viruses from playing Planeshift online.

I think the biggest virus spreading software on any Windows system is the Internet Explorer. (I just say m00.exe for the insiders...)

I have scanned the PS installer before installing, the installed files right after installing, and every single file that has been updated after each run of the updater. No virus. Furthermore, my scanner is set to on-access scanning.
I also agree that you musn\'t use IE for all it\'s unpatched, critical security flaws. And of course get a virus scanner and keep it up to date and run it regularly.
