Updater problem-ronxena solution not working
« on: January 02, 2005, 01:32:17 am »
I have a problem with the updater. When I run it and ry to update it just do a things (downloadin files, I think it says something of a new updater) for a few seconds and then open a DOS windows, making the updater to crash.
I tried what ronxena says (extracting the files found on updater.zip -http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=12346&boardid=33&styleid=3-) but when I try to open the updater or run PlaneShift it says that the file libz.dll (I think that is spelled like that) is no found. I tried searching for it in dll-files.com but I think its a game file so I cant find it there.
I noticed that there was a file named libz-cs.dll (that had been extracted fromupdater.zip) in the PlaneShift directory, so, just trying things out, I renamed it to libz.dll. Then it said that another file was missing; so I found the one that had the similar name but with -cs on it, and renamed. The updater  didn\'t seem to work, but did some things.

I loved the game when it was MB, and I cant wait to play the new version. Please help me as soon as you can.

It seems the last update is generally broken, this \"libz.dll\" problem has nothing to do with the hanging dos-window. Grr... looks like your hero linked the current update to wrong libraries ;-).

...I have the same problem

EDIT: It seems developers have already put newer (corrected?) images to upload-server.
So I am checking for workaround to get the current updater.exe working again... mine is already running.

you can fix libz.dll by renaming libz-cs.dll and repeat whatever other files come up, then run the uopdater, and then you get Zlibwapi.dll couldnt be found, that of which is not in the folder at all

you can copy libz.dll to Zlibwapi.dll.
but it won\'t do you any good, after that you\'ll get an TTcore.dll not found, and that one can\'t be \"fixed\"

guess we\'ll just have to wait

Ok... if you have a broken updater now (zlib.dll not found) you have 2 possible solutions:

1. User-Method: Reinstall and run updater
But Win98 updater will again fall into hanging command-com... so you have to do the already discribed workaround with manual unpacking.

2. Hacker-Method: Without reinstallation
  a) copy zlib-cs.dll to zlib.dll
  b) run updater in dos-window: updater.exe --auto
until it is finished or cries for error during
ERROR! Couln\'t copy selfupdating file... blabla
     -> stop then using Ctrl-C
  c) you now have a NEW updater.zip, extract stuff
      from there
  d) delete or rename back zlib.dll
  e) run updater as usual, it will start again

you aid you get the TTcore problem, did you sort out the libjpeg and libmng dll file problems?

if so... run the updater again... yes AGAIN there should be another trickle of files for us to play with >.<

There is still something broken with the files on the update-server, but at least now I have all up-to-date (according to updater).

-> Planeshift still needs a \"zlibwapi.dll\" ... so there is still something wrong with the latest update on the download-server

And anyhow the \"updater\" process is a real hard one for Win98/WinME users, because this update includes 6 files which are used and locked by the updater and NOT in the UPDATER.ZIP ...
I have no idea how to describe users with hanging command.com what to do in this case, there is no easy solution except to download the files manually from download-server with password. Even if you reinstall planeshift and run the updater you will hang several times (not only for the \"updating the updater\" now) and it will only help for first hang to manually unzip UPDATER.ZIP

EDIT: This update fixes Shift + AltGr key problems (at least for german keyboards).
I just logged in and ran around (death realm, old dungeon, plaza, wood) and had *no* crash on level transition with fullscreen 1024x768,32bit and software sound.

So basically, WIN98/ME users are screwed...
I think I managed to get around a few of the hangs, for:
csbmpimg.dll
csddsimg.dll
csgifimg.dll
csjngimg.dll*
csjpgimg.dll*
rendstep_std.dll
reporter.dll
stdrep.dll

By moving them to a new folder.

However: libcurl.dll is absolutely necessary to the updater\'s operation, so...

*I may have thrown these in the folder for good measure, figuring they would trip the updater as well.
