Give the noob a pickaxe
« on: January 02, 2005, 08:48:37 pm »
Boy, being a noob is difficult, dying many times trying to kill rats to be able to get some money to buy a pickaxe.

lol, and then you realise it\'s easier to make money by simply killing rats [14 trias per rat vs 6 trias for gold ore i believe]. With the new \'you can not dig here twice in a row\" system, rat killing looks alot easier :P

You are plain crazy. With mining before you got trias at insane rate (like  4000 trias/hours average) With the new system, it drops to 3000 trias/hours. can you kill enough rats per hour to do this? Think that digging an ore takes 5~10 seconds and waiting a rats to respawn takes much longer (killing it is also required ;) ). And i don\'t even speak of the over-crowding of sewers problem that looks to be less important now that almost everyone knows that mining is jackpot.

Note: do they have increased the value of the loot to reach 14 trias? Still not profitable.

I hear Platinum ore is even more valuable than gold. The question is, can you find where to dig for it... :)

Hint: and have you the luck that no bugs prevent you to come to this place

Note: my calculations were done using platinum. But the ratio between rat looting and mining is so high that even iron would slaughter it.

I guess it is kind of hard for some of the people to get the iron or platinum if they are one of the door intolerant races, since the only other way hurts.. bad.

I assume that rate only occurs once you have how many points invested in mining? I have 2 progression points in mining and only get 1 ore every 7-9 dig sessions. That mean i have to move around on top of that [even if i failed!] . So you have to assume i\'ve not reached whatever level it is that you gain an ore EVERY SINGLE DIG. Although i agree even 3000 trias/hour is too much, but that, imho, is   a flaw in the dig system (probably to test it). Some told me 1 level in mining is enough to pull that off...something tells me it won\'t remain like that? Imagine if you need 100 levels to have 100% dig  success?

It\'s not laziness , it\'s just annoying. Plus you have to consider the -only- way to get progression points in the first place is to kill rats. With the overcrowding in the sewers and the good probability that you will use progression points on OTHER skills first [i.e. sword] it means most of us newbies won\'t be digging gold at the rate you mentioned anytime soon.

Or am i missing something? Clearly people got chars from a previous server and skipped the newbie stage and assume a bit much?

you need level 1 to get very decent rate (~ 50%) at iron, level 2 to get 100% at gold, and level 4 to get 100% platinum. This isn\'t much... And don\'t worry, the little gold you invest is quickly gained back. I\'m myself at level 4 (never failed a single mining attempt, so level 5 will wait i got max in all magic ways :D)

Note: in the order, the wealthy one gave gold to the poor ones so we all get insane revenue very quickly, then gave back the money we received, that became insignifiant anyway - what is 100 gold with such amount of money...

If you have wasted any point in sword before getting at least level 2 in mining, you have made the biggest error you could. Because increasing your sword skill won\'t really improve your rat killing (spawn time) while getting level 1 in mining already make mining very profitable. (25~33 % success on gold)

Yes well, putting all your points in mining is probably the last thing on a newbie\'s mind considering a single rat takes my HP down by 50% [2 rats kill me]. In the end, if there\'s enough rats you spend more time healing than waiting for the spawn.

But guess i\'l take that in consideration now that i wasted most of my points :P

Btw when you talk about \"levels\" i assume you refer to putting something like 8 progression points into a skill? How many progression points to get to level 2 mining?

Indeed it\'s hard...if you didn\'t had MB character and even if you did you didn\'t transfer the money to CB...

But what you get when starting with no money...take my second character, a rat kills him in 4 hits...with no chance of killing the rat by yourself...:P..hard but that\'s life...

You can try, but you shall fail! Seek us not, we shall find you.

Arg no!

You guys are debating platinium, while noobs struggle just to earn some money just to buy a pickaxe.

I have been killed everytime by a rat not using nothing but empty hands. This is starting to get very boring dying constantly without a single success.

How many times one must die to get enough rats killed (how many) to beable to get 100t to buy a pickaxe.

Seeing I can only play on my friends PC while I await for the Linux binaries, I don\'t get much time to play.
