Aparently there are 2 forests? :O
« on: January 06, 2005, 06:32:28 am »
I looked around and couldn\'t see another thread about this problem so I thought I\'d take the liberty of posting about it.

There seems to be some type of problem with the forest.. apart from the areas where you cant \"mouseclick move though\" because of something to do with sections of the forest (im not quite sure what causes that)

There appears to be 2 forests... while playing I could walk through the forest and see all the tree\'s up in the air... the trees are somewhat small yet floating.... I think \"fair enough, another of those funny little bugs\"

Yet something changes sometimes... I havn\'t quite worked out what causes it yet... mabey when I spawn (sometimes spawning changes it yet sometimes it doesn\'t) or perhaps its got something to do with the next level loading... I dont know.

But... When that something changes I can walk through the forest again and find that all the tree\'s are safely sitting on the ground and are alot bigger than usual.

First time I saw this I though... cool, they fixed it.... Yet if that something changes again, the forest goes back to small floating trees again. So there seems to be a bug somewhere that affects the games ability to stick to the one type of trees/forest.

I have also noticed that the tree\'s are different in other areas... like the mining area and the long path to Ojaveda.... and they change too... So its got to have something to do with the coding of the trees/level changes I think.

The only other thing I can add about the trees is that the large version of the trees seem to have a flaw in the graphics... there are seethrough lines on certain parts of the trees.... and the 2 trees at the start of the forest while entering from the city, are a little close together I think... Its hard to navigate through them with the mouse movement as you have to lower the camera right down to be able to click behind them.

On another subject, the small bushes that are lying around the place. Is it possible to make those bushes so you can talk through them?... many many people get stuck on them and have to respawn.

One last thing is about being able to click through trees... there are a few places where the trees tend to get in the way of navigation... perhaps being able to mouse click through them would make things easyer for movement, like clicking on a tree tree branches wouldn\'t make you run directly underneath the tree branch... but instead you would be clicking on the ground that lies behind the tree, and any branches that block your vision of clicking wouldn\'t make you click the tree instead.

(ofcourse you could use the keyboard to move through the tree areas but shouldn\'t you be able to move freely with the mouse anyway?)

Anyway... thanks for your time... any feedback appreciated :)

Methos.

Clicking?

Why are you constantly talking about clicking?
You can move with the arrow keys and move around with the mouse, I didn\'t know there was any clicking movement like in the-game-that-shall-not-be-named.
So...what are you talking about?

You \"CAN\" use the keyboard to run around difficult objects like the trees, but its alot more conveniant to use the mouse to manouver...

Atleast then I can be running around using only one hand every few seconds to move my character and camera... leaving me free to type messages or to drink my coffee while I play :P

P.S. the whole \"the_game_that_shall_not_be_named\" thing is getting kinda old now... if you want to refer to something from another game... then you should speak its name.

Another issue potentially causing this could be your opengl/mesagl driver, possibly in conjunction with your graphics card.

Have you updated drivers recently?  The newest versions usually bugfix.

I\'ve not noted any such problems with my GFX card, it\'s a geforce 5200 with 128 megs of ram, (agp 8x)

Another potential is that due to your system, the clipping is set incorrectly, so you\'re only getting part of the images.  However, setting the clipping plane differently can directly affect performance  (i.e. slowing things down substantially).   What you may be observing with the \'floating\' trees (which I observed on an earlier install with the dynamic clipping set up) was that sometimes objects that slow things down too much disappear.  I.e. tree trunks, leaving the tops, or bits of the temple, or buildings in the city.  Ideally, you\'d have minimal clipping and a dynamic fog, but that involves hardware issues that can be totally incompatible with older hardware.    An issue of \'breadth of compatibility\' vs \'cutting edge\'.    You can either make things widely compatible, or you can use the best technology around.  The one increases your base of testers, the other limits the test base to whatever you use, similar to optimizing for a trident card, versus optimizing for the Geforce Quadro 4.  The one is very, very slow and limited, but widely compatible (it runs in VGA 256 color mode, thus any modern VGA card is capable of running it)  The Quadro, however, in PCI-E(16x) mode, is extremely capable, but only runs on high-end systems, thus only the richest gamers, and top-end systems, can handle it, restricting your test base to a very small proportion.

I get exactly the same problems. I got caught on an invisible tree, which was apparently hovering above the forest canopy. ;( (atleast until I logged back in)

Such a censor is not only pointless, but it implies a certain worry that people might grow to like runescape.. (though, why anyone would like it is beyond me. i can barely stand to hear someone talk about it)

Yes, i know the kind you mean.. but censoring prunescrape is a little over the top.. and it gets old fast (not that i\'m complaining :P)

EDIT: Also, hating the kiddies and not wanting their kind here is not the best way to go.. whatever happened to tolerance?

Sure they\'re annoying, but they\'re kids.. they\'ll grow out of it.. we should try to help them mature into productive members of society, rather than make them outcasts. *steps down from his soapbox and looks around*

A little off topic, aren\'t we?.. anyways, i\'m sure the forests will be fixed somewhen in the near future (if they aren\'t already)

The magical floating trees and sticky clumps of grass are both known problems which will hopefully be addressed soon (depends on what else needs to be dealt with)

The censoring of runescape was put in place for historical reasons  - for awhile comments along the lines of \"Roonscape does it like *this*, you should too\" were common, as well as \"Roonscape is teh sux!!\" Since the focus of the forums is on Planeshift, it was censored as a half-joke.  I\'m actually just guessing here, I wasn\'t around when it all went down. :)

Lyistra

That was the most confusing thing I\'ve read this week.

On the not so confusing parts I can say that:

\"yes, I do have the latest drivers for my GeForce 4 TI 4200, and the latest Direct X drivers and quite possibly the latest drivers of every piece of driver-like software on my computer :)

I dont think its an incompatability with any of my computer software or hardware as I have said. It is an intermittent bug/problem.

Dfryer

Thanks, that answers a couple of my questions :)... But you said nothing about being able to mouse-move through trees... is that also to be addressed soon?
