It depends, whether you are of the school of thought whichholds to the idea of 1 exponentially increasing universe, or a multiverse which is constructed of layers and planes and different dimensions. If you believe in the sole universe theory then life has major problems being created. This is supposed to be linked to the whole different climatic effects upon atoms etc. Currently the multivers way of thininkg is having more and more proof to its claims. Although I like to think the idea of dimensional shift is possible/will be possible, many dispute it.
Life itself is a tough question to ask. Do you mean sentient life?
If life does exist out there, from our point in the cosmos I think there would be life forms out there that are both...It depends on how far away from the core of the universe in which they are found. Time plays an important part in the advancement of a species!
