The Planeshift Loading Screen
« on: January 08, 2005, 04:28:05 pm »
I\'m looking for the person who created the planeshift loading screen (the screen that comes up when you enter or change levels in planeshift)

I would like to ask your permission to use parts of your loading screen to make a screen for each area in the game.

I have actually made one already (its only missing the big loading text) All I did was cut and paste parts of it onto a new screenshot of the forest, so I take no credit for the work apart from the time consuming job of cutting and pasting corners lol.

I just feel that planeshift needs some different loading screens and I am willing to make some if A: the maker of the screen doesn\'t mind, and B: the planeshift team actually need someone to make some loading screens, and are willing to try me out.

Its open source, so go ahead. Note that after you update, everything goes back to the way it was...

Took me ages to find a webhost... and the one I found put purple crap/writing down the bottom left of it... but you get the general idea anyway.

Edit: No longer has purple writing attached and the link is now working :)

Icefalcon:

What do you mean that after I update, everything goes back the way it was?

If your reffering to me changing the images on my own computer and then having to update planeshift and losing them.... your wrong.

My intent is to make loading screens that the devs can add in to planeshift itself... so that everybody can have appropriate loading screens.

Well, good luck getting the Devs attention then.  ;)

I can\'t view your image... It redirects me to some other site.

Yep, it\'s linking to one of these dubious shopping sites. You could use http://www.photobucket.com.
It\'s what I use, and it has not yet disappointed me, though I haven\'t been using it that long.

As for Icefalcons statement about the OpenSourceness: I\'m afraid this doesn\'t refer to the art, including the loading screens, but solely to the code. However, it should be OK to post it on this forum, they\'re about PS, so...

Edit: I think that the loading screen has a small flaw (or actually, two):

1) The fact that the slate actually looks much like a computer terminal, as I pointed out here and

2) that it, albeit being quite nicely done, doesn\'t fit the overall design of the remaining GUI anymore, since CB changed a lot.

:D

I got a working link (somebody shoot me if its not working ok)

http://free.angeltowns.com/methos/Pics\\loading_forest.jpg

Can somebody let me know what dimentions the loading screens need to be?.. I also need to know if there is a file size limit on it aswell. :)

Seytra I agree with you about the slate looking like a terminal... perhaps I could mess with it a bit on my next attempt.

Need input on this loading screen first so that I know whether to make more.

Hope you like it.

P.S. Will change the first link I posted aswell ;)

Thanks Ikarsik :)

I had intended to make loading screens for each area... but I am hoping to get some comments from a GM before I make any more.

I will however, try to finish it off tomorrow after work if I can find something better than M$ paint lol (yes... thats right... its all been done in M$ paint :P)

I\'ve been thinking of replacing the slate with a scroll of yellowed paper, making the text brown or dark blue, but the scroll would exceed my skills.

Therefore, I simply changed the inner area of the slate to look less even:

(same image as in the other thread)

As for your screen: I like it.
And you should be using The GIMP!
It\'s Free Software and very good. I use it exclusively since I got it.

Edit: the dimensions of the entire image are 1024 by 1024 for the entire image, the inner part are 800 by 600.

There doesn\'t seem to be any filesize limit, as my screen\'s filesize is larger than the original\'s already.

You should have atleast 100 goes at making a scroll before you say its beyond you ;)... you never know what you might come up with.

As for the slate... I saw that in the other thread you posted earlier and it looks good.... I was thinking of making a very mild background for it... just enough perhaps to take away the terminal blackness.... but at the same time I want to keep them more or less like the original so that they are more compliant.

Thanks for the heads up on the GIMP... looks to be a worthy program :D (*YAY I dont have to cut and paste in rectangles anymore*) lol

Thanks also for the dimentions.... but I cant understand for the life of me, why it needs so much space around the picture... I downloaded the original from the source and its asthough there is more image to display than actually shows. Regardless... I shall make it to fit the ludicrous size lol.

The file format has to be .png I\'m guessing

Regarding the scroll: probably I\'ll come up with some yellowish rectangles and some yellowish circles that won\'t fit together ;)

Yes, the file format has to be PNG, it\'s a Free Format just like OGG for audio files, so it\'s natural to use it.

I don\'t know why there is that much blackness around the actual image. My guess is that it\'ll be used if the screen resolution is set higher, but I\'d rather scale it. I will see that once I have my new computer.

I\'ve changed the file type to .png (but for the purpose of everyone being able to see it, the file type has been changed back to .jpg as the file upload limit on the server is smaller than the picture.)

I\'ve placed it on a 1024x1024 background and I only have to add the \"loading\" writing now.

I\'m not familiar with graphic editing so adding the writing is going to be tricky as I want to place a black backing behind the writing (check the original loading image to see what I\'m talking about)

Ofcourse anyone that knows how to do this easily is more than welcome to add the text for me hehe.... It would be preferable to get the writing in the same place as the other text, (or perhaps just aligning the right hand side of the text like the original would work good enough)

Anyway... on another note is anyone able to get the attention of a GM for me? I\'d like to know if they would like to use the loading screen for the planeshift forest area or any others for the other loading areas.
