2d Sprites
« on: January 09, 2005, 07:41:46 am »
simple consice and to the point.. where can one get a tutorial about how to make 2d sprites? i mean i have tried to self learn (man... what a joke that was XD) i found one \"tutorial\" on sprites at onrpg.com but it was \"tutorial\" in a very VERY loose sense.. it just told you how to trace an old sprite into a new one...

I am thinking about making a little old-school 2d sprite ORPG but i have no coding or art skills.. and frankly come on now people.. finding other people to get the stuff done is annoying and a long process.. and usualy the people you find are worse at it then you are as they just took a \"l337 c0ding in t3w minut3s!\" or \"art for idjits\" online corse of some type :P (i have some art and coding skill i think i did a
100 PRINT: \"I suck at coding!\"
in qbasic once :D)

So for me its better to learn to be a \"one man dev team\" (my past experiences with trying to make an orpg have ended with less getting done than if i had done nothing about my ideas XD) So i would just rather learn code and art myself personaly...

Also i searched the crap out of this.. there is no thread about sprite tutorials on this forum.. unless the search is stupid :/

also anybody with a good \"C++ for Braindead Keyboard Banging Monkeys\" link i would like that too :D

they are VERY weak and have no tradeskills (last version i saw)... i don\'t want hack\'n\'slash stuff.. i have been doing that for 10 years.. plus there are 100,000,000,000,000,000 hack\'n\'slash games out there :P plus its an MORPG (no way can it be massive my PC could handle maybe 15-20 people if i am not doing anything but sitting there staring at it :/) meaning online.. last vesion i saw of RPGM didn\'t have online stuff (rpg especialy hack\'n\'slash is old and boring online its even older and more boring offline XD)

I hate working with little pixels though.. is 3-d just as easy to program as 2-d? (i may like my women short and \"spirited\" {i\'m irish i really don\'t know another kind of woman XO} but i hate my images to be XD little images and having to edit them piss me off bunches :P)

i someday wanna build the ultimant tradeskill morpg :D bunches to do for the tradesmen (i take inspiration from rpgwo.com but its a small first step for tradesmen really :/)

go get the demo of sonic foundry viscosity 1.5 off of the sony website (they bought sonic foundry) It is the best 2d pixel art program out there, the sprites can then be used with gamemaker (which is in turn the best 2d game maker out there, also, code everything, don\'t use the little buttons.) Also, gamemaker is very powerfull, just need to learn how to use it, which takes a lot of time and testing.

Edit: Also, self learning is the only way to learn sprites, otherwise they always just look like someone else\'s. Just mess around with them long enough and they will start to look good.

Edit2: Also, play lots of snes, nes, and gameboy advance rpg\'s/japanese games to get an idea of how good sprites look.

Ok will do thanks for the info.. i like the old school sprites :P but its always a pain to learn to make themas they aer so tiny XD could i just draw a 200x200 (much easier then normal 50x50) and use gimp to shrink it down to size? Or would it look funny (it always looks funny when paint shrinks stuff.. gimp is the shiz :D)
