Reskinning Guide for Windows
« on: January 09, 2005, 08:34:31 pm »
If you want to reskin/edit the skins of a race go to your \\planeshift\\art\\ directory and unzip the archive \"Models-zip\" into your art folder.
Now look for directory of the race you want to change.

The directories are labeled as followed:

planeshift\\art\\dermm\\ = Dermorian male
planeshift\\art\\enkif\\ = Enkidukai female
planeshift\\art\\enkim\\ = Enkidukai male
planeshift\\art\\fynnwn\\ = Ynnwn female
planeshift\\art\\kran\\ = Kran (neither nor)
planeshift\\art\\stonebf\\ = Stonebreaker female
planeshift\\art\\stonebm\\ = Stonebreaker male
planeshift\\art\\ylianm\\ = Ylian male
planeshift\\art\\ynnwnm\\ = Ynnwn male

In those directories look for the *.jpg files (for Female Ynnwn) *.bmp files (head, torso, arm, hand, pants and foot texture of male stonebraker) and *.png files (hair of Stonebraker male, dermorian male, Enki female, Enki male, Kran, Stonebraker female, Ylian male, ynnwn male).

Each race has several different textures (Head, torso, legs, foots, and so on.)

Open them in your image editing programm (photoshop or corel photopaint rcommended)

Then use them as base for some recoloring/-tatooing work or as UV-Map on which you make your own textures and save them.

Now if you want to use them instead of the old ones make a backup copy of your \"models.zip\", then rightclick on the directory of the race you have changed and click \"add to zip\", then click on \"open\" then in the menu go back to \"\\planeshift\\art\\\" and select \"models.zip\", Then click \"add\" and when you start Planeshift the next time you have your desired textures.

Some tips on recoloring:
- You can easily make good looking recolors by changing the brightness and color preferences of the texture.

- If you are changing the color of some parts manually (eyes fore instance) keep in mind to use darker colors for darker spots and brighter for brighter.

Have fun!

I get the same thing. I\'m going to try rezipping with something other than Compressed Folders, as I\'ve heard rumors of incompatibility...

You have to make the files in the same type (*.png, *.bmp, *.jpg)

I had this message the first time i made it to, the problem was that i forgot to rename the new archive back to \"models.zip\"

Yep, knew that. However, there was a thread in CB Bugs about skinning, with one post in particular, that should clarify this:

I haven\'t had any problems as long as I :

- Keep the zip structure (models\\enkif) and filenames exactly the same ( eg. enkif_torso.png )

- Keep the filetype the same of course ;) this also means keep the image 24 bit etc.

- When adding the files back into the models.zip file make sure the compression is on fastest, or failing that (as it depends on the zip program) try different compressions. But what you say it sounds like you do as I do and use a program like winrar that allows you to have the zip open a drop the new files in at a compression of your liking?

Doing the above I found I could skin for this version of Planeshift. The only problem I had was with the compression so hopefully the error I recieved was the same (can\'t remember what error I had though).

I hope this helped and everything works out for you.

Regards,
Sty

I haven\'t been able to get Compressed Folders (built-in Windows zipping/unzipping utility, for those who don\'t know) to work, so I figure I\'ll just use a different program and try again.

thank you for providing that info.

anyways you can either use another programm (7z,Rar or Arc) or you just rightclick on the foler you want to compress and click \"Add to Zip\" then in the following menu open up models.zip. It does what you want believe me.l

How do you actually add the reskins as options instead of replacing the old textures? I want to be able to select all of the reskins I did.

Also, is it possible to add the other genders/races? I mean like, can I make a folder that says \"racenameM\" if there is only the female model, and then reskin another race and use it?

While you can add the textures of other genders/races, you will never see them in game - they don\'t exist yet, and you can\'t create them via the wizard and upload them to the server - without causing trouble.  I remember soumebody created extra races in MB, but he did more than make the textures.

However you can make cool models, test them - maybe by renaming them as another race, and offer them to the devs.

That way everybody would be using the models, not just you.

edit:

It would probably be very easy to add the models to the wizard in the code, and play them on your own, modified, server.

this is frustrating me to no end! i made my new furs for the female enkidukai, but whenever i load them into the .zip and put it in the planeshift folder, the in-game model looks totally wierd! it\'s as if it has no skin at all (like, a freakish grey looking dummy thing)

anyone know what i\'m doing wrong? my skin files are .png and look exactly like the originals (just different colors)... i have winzip... i just don\'t know what to do anymore!

Hmm, strange... are you sure you\'re not overlooking something silly, such as using a different filename? \'Cause if you don\'t use the same filename, it isn\'t going to find any skin to use. :)

Well Arcane Falcon you are right,

but hmm maybe, just maybe you accidently used the transparent color for the major part of your skin(dunno, as I said often enoguh i a just am little n00b)?

Ahh, .. did you actually add the foler to the zip or just the files?
