The Book of Yliakum. Tales of yore.
« on: January 10, 2005, 02:16:47 am »
Addendum: The links in this thread no longer work, and include no stories from the last few years. I will not be updating it. You can find the ones listed by searching. Thanks for reading anyways.

Out of curiosity, I began to read all (yes ALL) of the stories written in this forum from the begining (2002).  As I was reading, I found some real gems that I would like to share with you.  Stories I chose had to fit several stiff criteria, and I am picky.
They had to
1. spark my interest, as I bore easily.
2. fit nicely in the world of Planeshift. (Nothing that doesn't belong, I had to overlook several good stories because of this.)
3. have believable characters. (No "He jumped fifty feet into the air and slew one hundred foes with his sword..." stuff)
4. have good emotion and flow.  This is very important to me.
5. be longer than a paragraph.  The longer the better.
6. be by one author (usually).  Role-playing threads are a little too disjointed for me, but I may list the good ones later.
7. have relatively good grammar.  Typos and spelling I understand and forgive, but poor sentence structure will make the best of stories unreadable.
8. A role-playing-game is a story, and we are its actors. Forget this, and the reality shatters. Just something I said, and maybe the most important rule of all.

The stories are listed in the order I found them.  Title/link---Author---Why I chose it, beyond the reasons listed above---and post dates.  Please do not resurrect these threads... unless you are the original author to continue your story (hint, hint).

I will post more stories as I find them. After I finish with this forum, I plan on following links until I glean every noteworthy PS story I can find from the net.  I will then guard them with my life (figuratively).

Yes, I have too much time on my hands and I am obsessed.

The Reaver  By Falcon Eyes---Very good tale from a unique point of view.

Trail of Blood  By Falcon Eyes---Why: Sooo twisted, and yet personal.  Posted 09.09.2002

Loss by Faith   by Falcon Eyes---Very creepy.  Finished. Posted 14.09.2002

The Fall of Armen by athelas ---Well written political plot.  Unfinished.

The Rogue Elf   by  -Raeon Volune- --- Unfinished, but a good adventure.  Kind of goes against rule 3.  Posted 13.03.2002-  last author post 24.09.2002

Clean Cup   by  Rakeleer and Valfaran ---Two authors, one great story.  Witty and well written.  Too bad it was never finished.  Posted 08.02.2003-  last post 28.02.2003

Ravenmaster's collected poems thread (not by Raven)   posted 12.03.2003

The life of Simon Torbelle  by Simon Torbelle ---Two amusing short tales.  Posted 20.03.2003

Tale of the Quelfarani by Valfaran ---So good, yet so not ended. Posted 15.03.2003

Rhuarhii by Riune and Valfaran ---Riune's dialog is...well...interesting, and Valfaran is in top form. Unfinished. Posted 09.05.2003 last post 26.08.2003

Moogie's Story   by Moogie ---Very well developed. Finished, sort of (she tells us how it was going to end, or was it begin?) Wins the award for most compliments.

Yerrulin   by Kal Keraden ---Start of a very good adventure/romance, but breaks rule 2.  If the author could fix this, and finish...?  Posted 15.11.2003

PlaneShift : Quest of Lineage   by kinshadow  ---All I can say is 8o! Finished. .pdf format. Originaly posted ?

Family lost  by Dexlan  One of a kind.  Winner of the best portrayal of a Diaboli female award.  Yikes!  Unfinished.  Posted 04.12.2003

Draklar's Story by Draklar--- Great style. Unfinished. Don't make me hunt you down, Drak. 06.12.2003

The Rising of Phinehas by Phinehas---Good start. Love the detail. Where's the rest?

Fire without shadows. by Fanomatic2000/Jadd---Amazing story. Two very different characters written to perfection. Please come back and finish.

Dermorian Legend by karakth---Nice tale to tell to children. Clever.

The Test of The Jedi by Jedi---Only 12117 words? And you call yourself a writer. *demands the rest*

Lhoran En'Elon' by XpYtZ---I tip my hat. An excellent tale. Kept my interest the entire way through. I love the emotion at the end. Finished?

The Darkstorm Legacy: The Bloodline of Ventigus by Moogie--- Another fine (unfinished) work by our dear mod. A walk on her dark side. A good read.

The Path of Ashes (I had to give it some sort of title) :P  by TheRedMonk---Good writing skills put to good use.

The Rise to Ruin and Rebirth by DepthBlade--- A good history and story.

a simple one-off battle by steuben--- I love your writing style. Unique and simple, yet powerfull. Though I question the lack of caps *edit, now I know you will never change, nor should you. *smiles* Unfinished.

The Land of the Azure Sun by Draklar--- I will track down any more of this wonderfully written tale after I finish with this forum. Unfinished.

Continuing Story: Laevir by wolfdragon--- Wolfdragon's only two posts...I wish there would have been many more. A wonderfull start to an unfinish story.

Klyros Blue by Aerig--- A fascinating tale from the looking glass. A must read. Regrettably unfinished.

Chain of Souls by Under the moon (me)--- Yes, it is time to put my first tale in here. At 36000+ words *now 40,000+ , it is officially the longest story in the world of PS that I know of. Since I can not objectively review it, you will have the honor ;) . (I really like how it turned out, though) Finished and rewritten.

Mogura fighting a...what?! By Arnigus Faymor by Under the moon (me, as Arnigus)--- Something amusing I wrote as I was looking for tales to place in this post.

The Art of Tripping by Under the moon (me, as Arnigus)--- Another amusing tale by Arnigus. With a 'fight' scene.  ;)

Draklar's History by Draklar--- Another great story by Drak, winner of 'Best Storyteller' award (which I aim to take ;)). That makes three. I continue to enjoy his works. Unfinished

steuben, the soldier by stueben--- As I said before, I love your style (after I got used to it) Who would have thought the tale of a smith could be so enthralling?

The nine lives of Drakkar Azzhiranir by Esthurin--- Four of the nine tales are told. Dark and gripping. I dearly hope to see more, but it seems as if the dear writer has left us.

A Night to Forget by Phinehas--- Another Tale by Phinehas...from a mob's PoV. Quite enjoyable.

steuben and the refugees by steuben--- The tale of a once smith goes on. Give it a chance, folks, this is a great story. Finished.

Sisters by Miya--- Took me by surprise. Had to put it in here after it gave me the 'shiveries'. With a little dialogue change, this would be much better. Unfinished

Chain of Souls: Soul's Mirror by Under the moon (again)--- One of two CoS sequels that I will be writing. Work in progress. Likely to turn out longer than the first. Different style than CoS. I hope you like it.

My Tale by Zan--- Good story.

With that, this forum is caught up. **edit... I have been slacking in my duties for some time now, and this Book is FAR from being caught up. I will read and add as I can in a new post. I have more than a year's worth of tales to read or re-read, and there are so many good ones.

Sorry if I missed a tale or two, as I did some of this post very late at night. If you think your story should be in here, PM me, and I will give it another look.

On to the next site.

Chain of souls surely deserves a place in here!
I want to be a flame, to crumble to ash, but never ever burnt.

I want to rise higher, rise up to the heavens, but sink, just sink down deeper and deeper into nothing,

I want to be an angel, a chosen, a devil, but I am just a creature that ever wants what it wont get.

I also have too much time on my hands, and have also started reading the stories in this forum. I am glad that you have started this tread, it will be interesting to see how your choices compare with mine, I speak on a personal scale, not as a completitional one. I have no desire to list them as you do. I do it merely for the entertainment value.
Thanks again for the effort to do this.

Don\'t get too carried away with grammar Moon sometimes the story is made better by the propper use of \"bad grammar\" remember no human thinks in perfect grammar and the so called \"bad grammar\" can often be used to show the powerful emotions of fragmented thought; after all wich evokes more emotion in the reader?

The city; his city; his imperial city was burning!

The city; HIS city; HIS IMPERIAL CITY was burning!

Sorry for not updating for a while. Comp was dead(whoohoo! New motherboard!), and I\'ve been busy writing my own story(that never seems to end) and doing things off the net (don\'t panic, the real world doesn\'t really exist, go back to your screens).  I added several very good stories, and thank you very much for the bloodshot, burning eyes. I still haven\'t finished Jedi\'s yet, had to save it to a file for later.

@Hatch> That\'s not quite what I meant. It\'s more like...well, I\'ll look for a good..er..bad example later. It\'s four hours past my sleepy time and I may start writing bad structure myself. Maybe disjointed is what I meant.

@Moogie>I got a sticky! Thank you very much. And I enjoyed your story. I wish there were more like it(an more of it ;)). It inspired me to write mine. Although I don\'t know if I would have started if I had known it would end up being over 35000 words (that\'s 70 pages hardcover, give or take O.o ), and likely to spawn an even longer continuation and a spinoff.
(I must be tired, I had a hard time figuring out how to spell \'thank you\', came out thack, thakn, and thnac. )

@Everyone else> This is good stuff! Read it! A lot of people put too much hard work into it to let it go to waste.

@Writers>Finish your stories! I shall be sneeking you a PM of encouragement.

Thnac yuo all! (Yay, I got one word right! Grass Gnomes  )

Of coarse I will finish ;) . I just havent had a lot of time to read lately. Though, come to think of it, I don\'t think it ever can be finished, due to new ink coming in all the time. I will see about adding more stories soon. I was just over at AO looking at some of their works, and Kada\'s. A lot of nice reading. But this forum first.

*edit, four hours and many words later*

Seven writings have been added to the Book. I know of a few more I will also be adding.

Forum Finished. 37 tales and one poem thread. Enjoy.

Surely more things have been added since this was last updated. I use it like a book shelf and well: The shelves are full but the books are all shadows. No way to actually grab them. If you get my drift...Not that you are not buisy on the Parody Labrynth A.T.M.

..I... I just noticed that post o_O

Flattered to a ridiculous degree, but nothing I ever write is PlaneShift related. And if I do decide to write down Karyuu\'s story, it\'s guaranteed to remain with me, and shared only through roleplay... :)
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?

Actually I was thinking of writing an \"official\" history of Yliakum, not based on what happened according to this website but according to whate players in the actual game do.

Just wondering if anyone else thought that migh tbe a good idea.
