I been installing both all the time, some how theprecompiled binary versions seems to be more stable, though updating of the source seems to work much better.

Maybe sharing both experiences can yield two better products: the binary and the source versions.

The installer and updater repository are unavailable and under approval of the devs. Please check back later ;)

I agree - a source compilation is nice, but like the precompiled version - it is still limited by the machines its running on.  I cannot compile from source with the Kronen version.  Well - it works, but I just get segfaults when I try to run anything - updater - setup - client... I can run the updater as ./updater -auto.

and it does update... but... then it still doesn\'t run if I compile it again...

so... I tried it on 2 other machines...

Different errors - but still no running version - one actually got to the login screen, but segfaults when connecting to server.  I can\'t seem to figure out the problem either.  The loki-installer version worked on all three machines.

Machine 1: P4 2 Ghz - Ubuntu Linux. Nvidia GeForce2 MX 400 - binary driver.  512 Ram, 80 GB hd.  Segfaults when running all executables.

Machine 2: SuSE Linux 8.2. NVidia GeforceFX 5800 Ultra. - binary drivers.  512 Ram 200 GB hd.  Segfaults when running any executables, but the error is slightly different.

Machine 3: YoperLinux V2.1  Matrox something 64  MB card... Opensource drivers.  256 Ram,  80 GB hd.  Goes to login but crashes when connecting to server - once got past and on to char selection but once I tried to get in it crashes also.

S0, I tried slackware on Machine 2 - No go.  Tried Debian -  Wouldn\'t compile. Unresolved symbols till it just stops part way through ...  then - nothing.  No error or anything  not sure the problem here.

Anyhoo - maybe I\'m not that smart or something... but I can\'t get the source version to work.  If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.  I\'d like to be able to compile it.

The loki-installer worked on all the machines. - unstable on debian however.  Crashes alot for some reason.

You also getting these strange segment faults for source version when connecting, displaying of character selection screen. I seen many reading my topic about the problem, but no one seems to be able to answer it.

My machine is a Suse 9.1 PC (P4 2.8 GHz, 1 GB DDR in dual channel mode, nVidia GF4 TI4200 128 MB 8x AGP, Seagate HDD (plenty storage in RAID configuration), DSL 256 Kb/s up 512 Kb/s down, blah blah).

Only problem I have with the Loki version is that the updater, even 1.0.2.3-2 does not work, while the rest worked like a charm.

Running the updater worked for me - but you can always go to a command line and type psupdater -auto

or if you are in the planeshift directory

./updater -auto

That runs it in text only mode and seems to work much more often. :)

Forgot one thing... I think the server he had up is down because of a potential violation of the closed source art.

Actually just making sure its a good way to do things.  Don\'t want \'rogue\' installers out there installing strange stuff and then the PS team taking the heat for it.

That is why I suggested many times already that a art tarball be placed on the main download page, the binary installer placed on the download page as well. Then there won\'t be issues of the need to distribute the art content in order to complete the working client binaries.

I used ./updater -auto as it is quicker. Just crashers when it about to download the changed files after retrieving the file list.

An art tarball is a good idea.  Using the installer to get art is unreliable at best, and I\'ve had to delete the art folder and start again because it dind\'t finish downloading certain files, but made files for them that were full sized. I don\'t even know how this happens - but I\'d get images that were fine at the top but just white at the bottom and made everything look all screwed up.  And the files were the correct size and version so the updater wouldn\'t fix them.  A nice tarball I could wget would be great.

Here is my vote for it being a GREAT way to do things!

Having downloaded lots of Gigs from both CVS and the official installer, and doing a ton of compiling, the only tool I have used that worked first time on both my machines was Karosh\'s installer.

I really like this game but I am thinking I may have to resort to a different distro just to make it run. Please set Karosh free again :)

With Karosh\'s installer at least the psclient works, not like the CVS compiling version that fails to create the psclient file. Every day I run the update_code hoping that it will finally create a WORKING psclient ONCE MORE.

The decision on the future of the installer has not been made yet, so please wait a bit longer :)

Let us know when there\'s news.

The Loki Installer was a far superior system, IMHO.

I wouldn\'t say it\'s superior, it\'s targeted at a different type of user. The type of user who wants to do 3 well-known steps: download, install & play. He doesn\'t want to care much about compiling stuff, and he doesn\'t want to know how his computer works. He just wants to play, not to mess with things he doesn\'t understand.
That was the goal I had in mind when I created the installer.
