Translation(s) of Player Guide needed?

Quite a few people out of the new CB playerbase seem to lack the knowledge to read the english player guide found in the distribution and on the webpage based on a lack of proficiency with the english language.

I talked to Moogie about that a few days ago in game which lead to the idea that a tarnslation of said player guide wouldn`t be the worst to do.

The question is, should we translate the player guide into different languages to at least give those not so fluent in english a chance to read up and cut down \"beginner questions\".

Opinions?

Has anybody started yet to do so? If not I could probably do the german translation and probably in the long run the french one if needed/wanted. Any help would of course be appreciated.


Which other languages are needed? Out of the head I would think Spanish, Italian and Russian.

I\'ve heard several questions in French in game so it would be a good idea to translate it into that language as well.  Assuming, of course, that someone can be found to translate.

i think its a bad idea because if more people from other countries understand the guide then you get people speaking in 5 different languages in the game this ultimately leads to the end of the game because everyone gets annoyed at someone comming out of nowhere and start speaking in what to them is gibberish and then asking to trade and continuing in jibberish then attacking you because you didn\'t comply to jibberish(i\'ve seen this before)
also based on the language used ingame the dev\'s are english and it would cause problems in bug reporting if people started speaking at them in other languages (i use at not to specificly)

Actually, the devs are splattered, but yes, from what I\'ve seen they all speak fluent english.

I think it\'s a good idea. There are plenty of people speaking different languages in games, and such an international game as this, it can\'t hurt. :) (even though I won\'t be able to understand them :D )

Those people will play anyway, and besides, if you can\'t understand them then just leave(the area in-game). As for attacking you...hardcore tk\'s are almost always English-speaking Americans, but PS has guards against tk\'ing.

this makes no sense at all.
There are always ppl who want to fight, not only ppl who speak a different language than you do.
and Problems because ppl are going to speak in their own language to the dev\'s????
come on.. ppl who speak another language than you do are not stupid.

angeladorra is correct. Even people who speak English as their first langauge are sometimes not too bright. If you can speak a second langauge, even brokenly, you are brighter than I am. I\'m Australian, and bloody proud of it, our version of English is my mother tongue, but perhaps they need to produce a guide in \"Dumb Aussie\" for gits like me. Perhaps it could read something like this..... Glowing box with pretty pictures is a computer. Can you say computer? Go on say it with me, COM_PUT_ER. Very good! If you can not see pretty pictures on the box that looks like a television, please make sure that you have it plugged into the power point and turned on. What, you don\'t know what that means!!!!!!

Funny, I always thought it was COM_PU_TER. :D Btw, with all the nummy-nuts like us, that speak half-baked english that doesn\'t make sense to other english people around the world...well...a could more people that don\'t make sense won\'t hurt. :P

This sound complete jibberish to me.

My mother\'s lang is spanish, this mean that i\' nedd to attack every person i\'see that speak other lang than spanish?

I know the effect you speak of, but not to that extent. But I disagree that translations ultimately lead to that. After all, the disagreements and fights are between the people, not the languages.

In a few weaks I have finished my tests at university and springbreak. Then I will hopefully have enough time to translate the Beginners Guide to German if needed.

Ok here\'s a thought that may or may not be good to implement...
There are currently umpteen million various language to language translators available out there, I know of at least 5 that are free and open source, that can translate from any Indo-European language to another with various degrees of accuracy and of course occasionally humorous results....

I\'m wondering how hard it would be to create a plugin based system (it\'s been quite awhile since I looked at the code base for PS so I don\'t know if there is even a plugin system), that would allow for interception of language and on the fly translation.

This would allow those who have no skills in english to communicate with those who are proficient.

Here is how I would implement it.

In the pssetup add an option for \"Native Language\"
If anything other than English is selected, then a flag is set in the client that would cause it to load a translator plugin.

This translator would watch all incoming and outgoing messages from the chat window.  After a person /say\'s anything, it is translated into english then sent to the server maybe with a tag informing the world that this is a machine translation.

This would require a trap after the input but before the send to server.

As messages are recieved in the chat window they could be translated back to the native language of the player.

This would require an intercept at the recieve stage.

All of this is dependant upon the source code which I haven\'t viewed in quite some time.  And the ability to locate and integrate one of the various universal translators.

But I do believe it to be possible.  I think I will look into it further.
