building off an image
« on: January 20, 2005, 03:14:21 pm »
never been the greatest of drawers at the best of times using pencil, let laone on a tablet. so i work of images i have in my pictures, and theres a lot ;) basically i had the original image open and another window next to it, similar in proportion and i begin to draw the anatomy of character, and  once i get the basics i begin to alter, a work in progress, hopefully i\'ll turn it into what i see Demarthl as  :)

Cat girl sketch

Update : due to the server being worked on my attention span failed and i decided to continue with the mutation, using the sketch i have above i slowly erased sections of the image, and replaced them with idea\'s from what i\'ve seen in other pictures and my imagination, nowhere near complete but this is how far i have progressed

Cat girl changing

Update : my favourite part about a sketch is adding, or changing the hair, this is a hard job but enjoyable too, from the idea of the final image i have in my mind i decided the big n blue style wouldnt fit too well to Demarthl, nor the overly sized ears, so beginning by removing  the exterior lines and then colour i made her bald! hehe :D then i slightly altered the ears, and began to draw my ideal hair, you can make any style you wish, its to your own taste, and remember, your hair doesnt have to be the same colour as your furr! ;)

Update : the time consumer : colouring :D.
This one can take as little time as you want, and to be honest look shite, spend a considerable amount of time on it, and look like a quality picture, or spend too long on it and make it amazing *cough* Karyuu? *cough* :P
I just started with the clothes, easy enough, generally one colour... unless you zoom in 309% ;) thats what im at colouring that, i started with the bold green over everything, then made the darkest colour for the shade areas, remember your light direction ;) then slightly changin the scale, traced the dark line with progressingly increasing lighter greens until a match, looks ok zoomed in, now go to actual size and think wow :D this is honestly the best bit of colouring i have done ;)

cat girl colouring part 1

Update : Colouring part 2
Continuing with colour choosing the right colours to contemplate your current ones, doesnt just come down to point and click, its ideal to get the right shade of the colour, giving a huge variety to differ your image, comparing to the dark green currently used in the image, and the fact there is a leather belt narrows it down to brown or black, black is a nono as that makes the lines and too close to grey, for the fur, so brown it is, most belts are a dark brown if brown at all, and brown is a git to find in the colour wheel, ideally get it from another picture and alter translucency etc. to your desire, remembering that now you have shaded a part of the image, everything has to be shaded to match, many browns to come. also using golds for the dagger and sword butts, and the belt clip.
i used approximately 6 shades of brown for the Sheaths as an example :)

cat girl colouring part 2

Update : Hair colour
as suggested by Darkmoon i had a go at making my character\'s hair black, now this is tricky, as all hair outlines up to this point are already black, making them visible while the hair goes black can take time, forget the outline of the hair it can stay black, as long as there will not be black on the outside of the hair, the lines inside the hair defining sections is the focus, select a middle-ish grey, not too dark or too light, and trace over every inner line, colour the hair black taking care not to cover these lines, then redo them, gives a nice effect to black hair :)

Update : The Final touches :)
finally everything except one part is complete, the skin or in this case fur, you have the colour already, all the shades are set, so get to it, it does take a long time, but satisfaction of seeing your art finished is well worth the effort, a little thing i always do when colouring, everytime i colour along a black line i trace over it in black again to keep it nice and thick, and after everything is done i redo the black lining again, it helps to make your image stand forward other little changes you may have noticed can be done at any stage, like the eyes, giving an entirely new expression, turned the image from embarassed or shy to a sexy comin atcha sorta thing.

Midway through colouring the largest sections of your image you should stop. run to your kitched and grab the best looking portable beverage device, and stash it next to your computer ;) keep topped up with brain fluid and sheer laziness of not bothering to move :D

thus ensues a finished image, \'Demarthl\' :)

Hey, you\'re pretty good with that!
I dunno why you\'d think you draw poorly.

Dude, it\'s awesome :D A bit more shading/highlighting would be nice, but you did a really good job. Grats! ;)
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.
