Updater Messes
« on: January 21, 2005, 08:51:19 am »
I try using my updater... and it gets to being updater 1.0.2.3.. or something like that... then this window pops up saying

\"The updater will now start replacing the old file with the new ones
This will happen in the background so please do not do anything until you get a message tell you to do so
Press OK to continue\"

I press OK, and updater disapeers. I don\'t press OK, nothing happens. What is wrong with this?

in the ps dir go to updatertemp and copy all the files there to the root ps dir

After that, rerun the updater and it should work/download new stuff.

I do not want to be rude to you as I can understand that experiencing a bug is somewhat \"disastrous\" but would like to politely remind you to use the search button.

There are several threads concerning the same question already open and I think it does demotivate people who want to help/give technical advice and open up every thread to read the same several times.

You can definitely get into the game after following Pogopuschels instructions. Maybe you want to give us details what happens after updating.

After running the updater and pressing the OK-button, wait a few minutes while the program downloads the needed data. This will happen in the BACKGROUND, so don\'t wonder if there is no progression bar.
Then unzip the updater.zip-file in your Planeshift  directory (with PS-directory as target). Now the updater should work.

(I think, you can read this in another thread, too.)

definitely NOT. (you wanna have a vnc connection or what. what part of my report you don\'t get.)

the screen stays black, after changing windows it gets white and the task is not responding anymore. i believe it\'s a cpu resource bug. (right after loading bar ss full the process takes all cpu and the loading screen stays. on changing windows it gets black or white.)

yes, count, i actually updated the updater manually before looking in the forums.

Run pssetup and save your config again after checking the settings, sometimes they are lost (for me).
Providing some info about your system (OS, gfx card etc) might help, so you might consider doing that.
Pointless complaining might not help, so you might consider not doing that.
The process will always take up to 100% CPU since there\'s no FPS-limit.

wouldn\'t help with my problem as the update is the source of the problem, not my system.

plain wrong. first, what system do you have. on mine the process takes much less most of the time. secondly, yes, there actually is (or at least was before the update, i cannot check as the second update isn\'t complete, yet) a fps limit, that is 43. funny you didn\'t realize.

complete update (== new install) didn\'t help at all.

i just checked my logs. last time i was online w/o any problems was on january, the 12th. 9 days later (today) i only update the game and cannot get into the game anymore as it has now a cpu resource bug. GREAT!
although my game received text messages (of course not seen on screen) and saved them in the chat log.

seems to be related with graphics.

*sigh*

Why why why why..

First, You do NOT need to wait after pressing \"OK\" on the message box, since the files are already downloaded by then.

Secondly, This whole feature is missconfigured, that\'s why it\'s not working on your clients, just copy everthing the updater has unziped in \"updatertemp\" to your PlaneShift directory

Yes it would help. I\'m not saying it could be a bug with the graphics, I\'m saying it could be specific to your hardware, since I and many others do not experience that with the latest update.

You are correct though: A FPS limiter is implemented, to my knowledge and experience it is active on the loading screen and the updater (this also corresponds with CVS change log).
EDIT: Also seems to be on the client now, 62.5 is my max. and pretty constant value.

You might want to try the following: start psclient with the parameter --console and paste in here the last thing you get in there (meaning: the last thing you get before you think it enters the infinite loop, there might be output from that as well).

*looks around at all this fighting and sighs*

Um yes. Sorry I did post another thread. I read the other ones and mine seemed slightly different and thought it was a different problem perhaps. My bad. :(

Another thing, please dumb all this down for me, cause I\'m now REALLY confused on what I\'m supposed to do.

---EDIT---- Uh... n/m
Finally figured it out for my own after tinkering for a little while. Thank you so very much! ^.^()
