Thinking about changing my PS name..
« on: July 30, 2002, 04:00:50 am »
Hey guys, I need a bit of your time if you don\'t mind! I was thinking about the name is was using and Shinji is from a mecha anime and all.. so I thought I\'d chose something more.. appropriate with the sword-esque type of world.. hence, I came across Sasaki Kojiro Genryu and Miyamoto Musashi, the most famous and strongest swordsmen ever in Japan. I\'ll give you a bit of history, and what names I can pick.. try to pick the ones that sound cool stuff.

Musashi is the most famous Japanese swordsman ever, his religion was called \"The Way of the Sword\" a branch of Zen Buddhism. Musashi was a ronin in his youth, looking for opponents, though as he became older he turned into a philosopher, but still battled. Musashi, hence, was extremely spiritual. Musashi was the first to utilize two blades in combat.

Sasaki was Musashi\'s skilled rival, aristocratic, intelligent, extremely good with ladies, though not a womanizer, while Musashi was a rough type of person.

Finally, the two were set to duel on a small island off of Japan. Sasaki arrived first, but after waiting for a supposed five hours, Musashi finally arrived. Sasaki was extremely angry at his rival, and in his anger he unsheathed his huge drypole longsword and tossed the sheath away. I don\'t remember exactly what Musashi said but it was something like \"A warrior without his sheath is nothing\". And after this, Musashi struck down Sasaki in a single blow, it may have been two but no one knows.. anyways, it was kinda fair and kinda not.. but you get it. Anyways, that was Musashi\'s final battle, and he named the island \"Gairyu\" after Sasaki.

So now that I\'ve given you the background, here\'s the names

Musashi
Miyamoto
Sasaki
Kojiro
Genryu

You take your pick. Thanks alot! ^_^!

I\'ve just read the first book of Musashi\'s life... how what is it... \'the stone and the sword\' I suppose it is in English, I am waiting for a friend to finish reading the next one.
I\'d loved it.
And I like that name, Musashi.

haha you must really like the japanese culture. And EVA is not just a \"mecha anime\" imo.
Why don\'t you create your own fantasy, non-japanese, non-englished or half-japanesed names?
Or get some Tolkien influence.

Personally?.I would come up with any name I felt fits?I am not saying that I would go with Skywalker.
Taking names from history is a bit odd to me, and names from written work is also a bit odd?
But with that said, Oriental cultures have as strong a Fantasy setting as Western cultures, the only thing is usually it is a bit more mixed up. In current day Japanese or Chinese fantasy many of the characters/creatures from old myth is taken to current day, near future and even distant future. While western culture keeps these things more separate the Japanese and Chinese media (movies, cartoons, comic books, novellas) don?t.

As such I think that while I would rather try an make an original name?and I would try and stay as far away from Lead Character names from anything, I would not exclude a name because it appears in a sci-fi movie/book/anime?

Just take a name that you are comfortable and seems to fit. While taking names Like Distructo-bot, and Laser I would frown on and it may be asked that you change it?I would feel the same if there was someone with the name Katana, Frodo, Gandaulf, Dritz. Reason being is many people already associate history, story and meaning to those names, and I think it is more important that you make your own history.

You might want to use a portion of a name and mix it with another, change the spelling drastically, there are many things you can do to create a new name?be imaginative, but don?t be tied by current day literature for the fantasy genera?just be creative.

That said also be practical, long names are hard to type and remember?so if you have one you will not get many tells in the game?however while I like the name Paxx it is not something I will use in the game, usually I go for 6-10 letter names that are easy to read and spell, no more then 3 syllables.

Kordon, Kisash, Kotar, Nitone, Borlock, boreloc?

But that is just me?you should do as you feel is right. What we will not allow in the game are names with numbers, names that are a play on current day computer culture, names that we feel are there to offend such as Assmunch, hairpie, crackerkilla, jesussux?so once you pick a name look at it closely?and figure if someone can see it as offensive, then keep it to yourself so that you get the name when the game starts.

Also never give a prized name to your first character?the first in these games is usually the one used to figure out what not to do. :-)

Just some personal comments on making a good character name in a MMORPG.

I think Cyo\'s idea is the best. If you can\'t decide between those names you have there, just mix them and create one of your own. Besides, you feel more proud of a name you came up with than a \"borrowed\" one (I know I know, I \"borrowed\" my name from a game. But I\'m not sure if I\'ll be using this name in the game, anyway).

Nice story, by the way ;).

Um, and I am not a hundred percent sure, but I think it\'d be wrong to say that Musashi is a fencer, since he practiced a Japanese style, which means he practised \"kendo\". Fencing is Occidental swordfighting. I don\'t know if you can call a Japanese swordsman a \"fencer\" :p

I\'m oriental, yanno, so I\'m into all that samurai and martial arts and stuff. I was thinking of creating a usual fantasy name such as Lord of the Rings but I kept coming across rough names that I really didn\'t like, they just didn\'t flow together all that well. And also, with the names Musashi, Genryu and all.. they\'re actually common Japanese names.. just that the warriors happened to have them. But yanno, I\'m gonna give it some time.
