Darkness problem gamma correction
« on: January 26, 2005, 01:11:59 pm »
I used the search option read trough some topics concerning the darkness of PS especially in the sewers and dungeon. I could\'nt find an answer so i started fiddling around with monitor settings.

I found my Nvidia XFX 6800GT videocard has an inbuild gamma correction. Turned it up and yess there was light.

I don\'t know anything about other videocards and wether they have this option but just go to you\'re monitor setup and (in my case windows XP) you should see a tab for the videocard click it and you will see the different settings you can change. I suggest setting it back to standard after gameplay.

Hopes this willl help some of you out

go to the advanced monitor settings you should find you\'re videocard there

Yes, that is pretty much the solution for every video card.
BUT there are also some people, or at least there were some in the past, who didn\'t have any contrast. So basically they saw their character standing in the middle of a complete darkness. Turning um gamma only made the screen grey, but you couldn\'t make out any objects. :)
I haven\'t heard such a report in quite a while though...
The internet is "the terrorists'" most important weapon, they say.
Wrong.
Fear is their most important weapon.
Ours is our freedom.

For mac users, there is a thread on here that corrects it.  It involves relighting the death realm.  Not so hard, but takes a little time.

Basically, you go to a dark area, log out

run planeshift from the command line with the option -relight

log on, this will take some time (like up to two hours for some people).  When you get in, make sure it worked then LOG OUT IMMEDIATELY.  If you load some other big place, you\'re sitting and watching your computer build for hours.

good luck

-relight works perfectly for the entire world. However, the relighted files will get replaced by the updater, and relighting takes too much time, even on fast computers, to be done regularly after each update. I\'ll setting them to readonly before I update for now, but that\'ll of course prevent any updates to them, possibly excluding important things.

Therefore, I think the files on the update server should just be relighted once, to make the problem instantly disappear for everyone. After all, if the other maps can be lighted properly for everyone\'s setup, so could be the dark ones?
