Two of my favorite are The science of Discworld I&II ( Haven\'t read III yet ) by Terry Pratchet, Ian Stewart & Jack Cohen.
Am ashamed to say that I haven\'t read any of the discworld books yet (Just the science ones), but the emphasis is on Yet...

one of my favorite quotes :
\" ...the most effective method we have yet devised for passing extelligence on to our children is a sytematic series of lies... It is called \'education\'.\" --- The Science of Discworld II The Globe
Some contradictions as found on h2g2.

Wow, this thread is going farther than I thought it would. Yay! Those are some good authors you guys have noted.

Heh, so did I. Those were so predictable, even when I was 8 years old.   For some reason I loved them though.

I found the hardy boy\'s books too predictable to like, so I stuck with Tolkien.

Well, that\'s not in any order, because I like all these books to a similar extent:
\"Crime and punishment\" Theodor Dostoevsky
\"Brave New World\" Aldous Huxley
\"The Lord Of The Rings\", \"Silmarillion\" Tolkien
Novels by Terry Pratchett.
\"Catch-22\",\"Something Happened\" Joseph Heller
Novels by Strugatsky Brothers (Russian science fiction), don\'t know how exactly they are translated to English
\"Master and Margarita\", \"Heart of a dog\" by M. Bulgakov
\"12 Chairs\", \"The golden calf\" by I. Ilf & E. Petrov

So hard to chose a favorite book out of all the ones I read. I think I would have to chose The Amber Spyglass the 3rd and last in the His Dark Materials Trilogy. Very good book I would recomend it to everyone but Christians that burn books.

I guess I should have researched a little to find this thread in the first place.  I guess I got a little too excited :).  But I would stronly encourage all to check out A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.  Especially if you like first person and character development.
